CAPAC COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL Capac, Michigan The Capacian Alice McCluskey Editor The Student Council The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to a child, a good example; to a father, deference; to a mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity. — Lord Balfour With the above lines we praise the faithful workers of this year ' s Student Council, and to them we hereby dedicate this, the Capacian of 1960. As we complete this school year we can look forward with anticipation to another group of young men and women ready to try their wings in our troubled and complicated world. What will they do? How far will they go? D id we meet their needs? Are they ready? No one can answer this question for us but our graduates. As Americans these people have the whole world before them. They can travel as far as their initiative and ability will take them. The problems of growing up have been difficult. This battle, that so many of us forget, has been won. The trials and problems are for- gotten. Only the good things remain. As you leave us and move toward new things, I hope you can look back to Capac High and feel you have gained from your years with us. Graduation night we hope you feel that rather than teachers and principal you have gained some friends. This Page Sponsored By VAN POPPELEN ' S DRUG STORE jcr u-{. In preparation for this work at the hospital, the sponsors, Mrs. Kahn and Mrs. Lang, and some of the girls who have had experience working in the hospital give demonstrations of the making of a hospital bed, bathing a bed patient, home care of the bedfast patient, etc. We have taken field trips to Ford Hospital in Detroit, this last fall. In the spring we took a trip to Highland Park Hospital. The summer was spent preparing for parades in Algonac, Fraser, Marine City, and our own local Lions Club Carnival parade. While preparing for these events, much time was spent of music fundamentals and developing a higher standard of musical achievement. At the Lions carnival, our parents helped us serve a Bar-B-Que chicken dinner which was a great success. The summer work came to a climax when the Senior Band appeared at the Michigan State Fair grand opening parade for the eleventh consecutive year. Capac schools became a member of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association and were entitled to participate in the many and varied events. The fall was occupied with marching band events. This was a fall we will never forget. It rained for five straight weeks. However, in spite of the mud and the cold, the Senior Band did present four shows for football games. During the football season we had guest bands from Armada and New Haven work with us in combined shows . Concert season started November 1st. The eighth graders who had helped out the Senior Band during football season were excused for Junior Band and we welcomed back our cheerleaders and football players. Albert Schook — Horn and Carol Evans — Saxophone, were selected by the officers of M.S.B.O.A. District III Clinic Band at Caro, Michigan under the direction of John Paynter of Northwestern University. Cynthia Babcock was selected to play in the Clinic Orchestra under the direction of Robert Lint of Hillsdale, Michigan. Our Mid-Winter Concert was presented on February 8th and was well received. On March 26 the Senior Band participated in the M. S. B. O. A. District III Festival held at Caro, Michigan which climaxed six weeks of our hardest work . Our concert season ended with our Annual Spring Concert on May 1 . Mrs. Honsinger was elected President of the Blue Water Band Directors Association and Capac schools were host to the Annual Blue Water Band Festival on May 4. The Junior Band attended the Blue Water Junior Band Festival on May 11 at Kimball Unit Schools. The school year closed with a strong unit on marching fundamentals and appearing at our local Memorial Day Parade. Thus ended a full school year of activities with our band members looking forward to summer vacation and the more personal attention given in the Summer Music Program . In league play they finished in 2nd place with a 10-4 record, a full two games ahead of 3rd place finishers. Dispite the fact the Chiefs were short of experience at the beginning of the year they made a quick recovery after dropping 4 of their first 5 games. Under the capable leadership of Bill Abraham and Larry Kalbfleisch, the only seniors on the team, the Chiefs recovered to win 10 of their last 12 games to make this one of the best basketball teams to represent Capac in a number of years. A letferman in every position is what greets Coach Smith as the baseball team starts practice for the 1960 season. Lead by seniors Bill Abraham and Larry Kalbfleisch there are nine returning lettermen from last year ' s team which posted a 7-7 record for the season. This is the best season the Chiefs have had in many years. These lettermen will be hardpressed though by newcomers to remain starters. This depth is important to a winning ball team. With nearly fifty players out for baseball this year Capac is going to field a junior varsity team for the first time. This team will be coached by Mr. Huebner and will be a proving ground for those underclassmen who fail to make the varsity. Coach Huebner is shown with Pat Owens and the rest of the pitching hopefuls explaining about the proper grip on the baseball. While infield candidates look on lettermen Bil make the double play. Abraham and Jim Lincoln demonstrate how to Veteran catcher Loren Clark shows some of the other catching candidates a few pointers. 60 These girls cheered the varsity on to VICTORY: D. Markham, V.
