People and Customs Expressing thoughts in speech and writing was one of the main obiectives of the Foreign Language Department. Courses were designed to help stu- dents communicate in a foreign language. Emphasis was placed on the development of the student's ability to comprehend what they heard directly without translation. Conversational Spanish, a new course, was for stu- dents with two previous years of Spanish. Dialogues and written work composed the classroom activities. Spanish Two also received a new textbook which enabled the teachers and students to work with up to date material. Students from the German classes along with some students from other schools in the area, took a trip to West Germany during the sum- mer. The students stayed in youth hostels and attended some school classes. They visited the cities of Cologne, Hannover, and West Berlin, lt was such a great success that the German class have planned to do it again this summer. The more advanced Spanish classes were able to take a number of field trips. Among the places they visited were the Phoe- nix Museum of Art. L 26 f Foreign Language
