Placed fourth, the Canyon del Oro chess team seemed to be one of the favorites for the state titles, with many returning members. The team competed in regional, state, and divisional tour- naments. Their competing season started in Sep- tember and lasted through April. Under the supervision of Al Cortez, the club met everyday after school and practiced their individual skills by competing against each other and learning new techniques and strategies. The whole club consisted of fifteen students. The Varsity Team was made up of the best five players and the Junior Varsity Team was made up of the next best five players. Picture 3, An Amphi player is tackled by an unidentified Canyon lineman. 198 Green and Gold Club If-3 The Green and Gold Club, which was composed o football players on all levels, was strictly a fun raising function. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Bo Smith and the direction of president Brian Beis- meyer, the money that was made in the off season was put into an account for all the football teams- This allowed the team members to make a contrib- ution to their sport. With the money raised, they- bought film to take pictures of all teams, Varsity, .l.V. and Freshman. The Varsity football game were shown to the parents for a fee. The club als I held a number of team breakfasts.
