Dorados Take AA State Title Overpowering. Maybe this is the word that best described Can- yon's first undefeated State Champion Football team. The Dora- dos were ranked first in the AA at the outset of the season, a position they held until the end of the year. The drive towards the championship started early. Before the season began, the team set up five goals-beat Amphi lwho they hadn't beat since 1971l, defeat Douglas and Flowing Wells, capture the Division and win the State Championship. All five were accomplished. There were a number of significant changes made from last year's 6-4 team. Bob Smith replaced Art Mongels as Head Football Coach, and the Wishbone replaced the Veer. The change of offense was evident against Eloy, as CDO won a tough game, 14-6. Amphi lumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter, but led by Steve Eastman and Greg Connor, the Dorados came back to win, 27-20. Doug- las, the team which CDO later beat in the state game, couldn't mount much of an offense and lost, 20-7. The division was locked up with a win over rival Flowing Wells, and in what was supposed to be a tough game against 32 ranked Winslow in the state playoff game was a 27-O romp. ln the State game, a 17-O lead was too much for Douglas and CDO won 24-15. In all, it was the defense that carried Canyon to the crown, as six shutouts were recorded. Although most of the players will have graduated, Canyon will have enough talent to make another run at the State title next season. 'V' ,.o wgiss.
