The ROTC Dept. consisted of 114 cadets, 56 of whom were ninth graders from the junior high. In January, the drill team com- peted in a city-wide meet at the EI Paso Coliseum. Later in the year, another meet was held at River- side, followed by another meet in Las Cruces. On Nov. 11, the ninth grade cadets marched in the El Paso Veteran's Day Parade and the CHS boys' drill team participated in the Las Cruces Parade. ln March, an inspection was conducted by the Area Manager, headquartered in New Orleans. Overall, the troopers fared well and Naval Science Instructor Capt. Charles Young and his assistant Chief Robert Taylor were well pleased with the results. One month later, 38 cadets journeyed to San Diego, Califor- nia to participate in boot camp and Fleet Training. There, the cadets got a chance to live and work like actual Navy enlistees. The cadets raised funds during the year by washing cars for Region XlX's Drivers' Ed. Dept., selling candles and calendars, Christmas candy canes, and by sponsoring a dance in November. The cadets were headed by Company Commander Martin Soltero, XO Jacob Fraire, Lt.'s Elizabeth Damian, Gloria Her- nandez, Veronica Gomez, Patsy Dominguez, Juan Cazares, Richie Cazares, Alfredo Martinez, and Eloy Orozco. For those students who wished to express themselves in a creatively manual way, Building Trades and auto mechanics offered a unique opportunity. Under the expert guidance of Mr. John Boylan, students were given the opportu- nity to use their manual talents to build and repair items such as: weight room benches, VOCCT easels, science room faucets, office cabinets, a book drop for the library, a concession stand, and a mag- azine rack for the ROTC Dept. In April, Chris Medrano and Gerardo Rivas traveled to Houston, Texas after qualifying locally with their bench project. The boys built the bench out of a dead cot- ton-wood tree they stumbled across one day. Mr. Boylan said he was very pleased with the boys' performance, adding that if all the classrooms were filled with students like the ones in his classes, then he'd feel very confident about our future. Mr. Boylan's comments were also ech- oed by Mr. Arthur Stancliff, auto mechan- ics teacher. Mr. Stancliff's department was also represented in state competition by Art Lucero, who rebuilt an automobile transmission and by Jesus Gonzalez and Albert Morales who overhauled two auto- mobile engines. ln addition to their tasks, the boys also had to write a step-by-step procedure write-up. Mr. Stancliff added that the boys com- pleted their tasks with very little if any, teacher supervision.
