Q :X x X I Mg X 3 j sg X X A .xi 33 Q 3 .Aw ww-N NPN Pages fi Mr. Dowell Williams Mrs. Dorothy Nunn The ,1981-82 El Conquistador is proud to dedicate this year's edition of the yearbook to Principal Dowell Williams and Mrs. Dorothy Nunn. We have chosen Mr. Williams and Mrs. Nunn because of their love and concern for the students at Canutillo High School. Narrowing the choice down to two individuals was a hard decision, for we sincerely felt this honor could have been bestowed on a number of other deserving faculty mem bers. Mrs. Nunn has been involved in education for some 42 years, having received her bachelor's degree from San Diego State University and her master's degree in psychology from UTEP. Of those 42 years, Mrs. Nunn has been here at Canutillo for the last 16 years. When asked what major changes she had witnessed here in Canutillo, Mrs. Nunn replied that it has to be the size CHS has grown to. Mrs. Nunn feels that working with all of the students, teachers and administrators is the most rewarding part about her job. She has worked under eleven different administrations during her 16 years at CHS. As for the most frustrating part about her job, Mrs. Nunn replied she tried not to allow anything to frustrate her, as her philosophy is to take each day as it comes. Mr. Dowell Williams who has served as our principal for one-and-a half years, finds that his contact with the students is the most rewarding part of his job. Mr. Williams has been involved in education for 25 years, four of which he served as a math and science teacher at Presidio High School, Irvin High School, and Canutillo Jr. High School. As for the most frustrating part of his job, Mr. Williams cites changes that come too slowly and the paper work taccountabilityi which he points out is overwhelming. Concerning CHS' future, Principal Williams foresees an increase in student activities and an expanded cur- riculum, as well as an increase in physical growth with the additions of new buildings. ' Educationally, Mr. Williams received his BBA from UT Austin and his master's degree as an education specialist from NMSU. ln addition, Mr. Williams lacks only his dissertation to receive his doctorate's degree in education administration. After a hectic and busy day at school, Mr. Williams unwinds with sports and other outdoor activities. Table Of C0hteI11ZS THEME ........... ..... SEN IORS ....... As a result, CHS's student body was reduced from 580 to 430. This of course did not mean that we didn't have our share of problems - every family does. But, for- tunately, the problems were surpassed by beneficial and positive results. Overall, everyone seemed to en- joy more physical freedom' of movement, .more breathing space. Everybody seemed to bump into each other less in the halls as well as in the classrooms. ln many ofthe classes, teachers found they could afford s But BETTER their students more individual attention because of smaller classloads. In the cafeteria, students had to wait less time to be served and fewer students in the cafeteria also meant less blaring radios and thus less din during din-din. Discipline problems seemed to decrease because of the smaller number of students and because of the fact that upperclassmen, as a whole, were more mature than freshmen. So overall, the 1981-82 school year has to be looked at fondly and favorably, proving once again that good things often come in smaller packages. . fggi f Age- at V 5 SEINIGRS Cf 'Rosa Acostagflixwff Frank Alcala Laura Alderete Gwnuw. To begin with, Mr. Hector Castelo replaced Mr. Bert Salazar as the journalism teacher. Mr. Salazar resigned his position to finish working on his master's degree. A second major change was the size and format of the news- paper itself. A new size was initiated, increasing the size of the 8- page paper to a tabloid size. A concentrated effort was made by both the staff and the sponsor to produce error-free and well- written material. From the beginning, the goal of the staff was to improve with every issue. This year's staff was led by co-editors Pat Stewart and Aurora Castareda. After the first semester, the responsibility fell on Aurora's shoulders as Pat discontinued coming to school once she completed the necessary hours she needed to graduate. The rest of the staff was comprised of Rosa Acosta Qassistant editorl, Martha Gomez, Elizabeth Cano, Joe Medina, Lorena Zambrano, and Banti Gil. Adjusting to a new advisor two months into the school year was only one of the changes experienced by the yearbook staff. Along with advisor Hector Castelo, came new guidelines, a new layout format and other innovative ideas. As always, deadlines posed what at times appeared to be insurmountable obstacles. From the beginning, lack of photographic equipment made our task all that much more challenging but in spite of this and the pro- blems such as ruined rolls of film, lost negatives, and a Iackadaisical attitude by some staffers, we finally pro- duced our yearbook. With a year of experience under our belts and with the 28 expected acquisition of sorely needed equipment, next year's task should prove to be and an even bigger and better yearbook is already ing planned. This yearbook was spearheaded by editor Alejl Reyes who spent countless numbers of hours school and during holidays to make this book a rt Another staffer who also gave unselfishly of his time Other staff members included Elizabeth D Mane Duby, Richard Headley Peter Helfen Holland, Robert Johnson, Lupe Mata, Jose M Jose Paredes, Sylvia Pavia, Leticia Porras, Roberts, Laura Trujillo, and Junko Yanagi. In January, the drill team com- peted in a city-wide meet at the EI Paso Coliseum. Later in the year, another meet was held at River- side, followed by another meet in Las Cruces. On Nov. 11, the ninth grade cadets marched in the El Paso Veteran's Day Parade and the CHS boys' drill team participated in the Las Cruces Parade. ln March, an inspection was conducted by the Area Manager, headquartered in New Orleans. Overall, the troopers fared well and Naval Science Instructor Capt. Charles Young and his assistant Chief Robert Taylor were well pleased with the results. One month later, 38 cadets journeyed to San Diego, Califor- nia to participate in boot camp and Fleet Training. There, the cadets got a chance to live and work like actual Navy enlistees. The cadets raised funds during the year by washing cars for Region XlX's Drivers' Ed. Dept., selling candles and calendars, Christmas candy canes, and by sponsoring a dance in November. The cadets were headed by Company Commander Martin Soltero, XO Jacob Fraire, Lt.'s Elizabeth Damian, Gloria Her- nandez, Veronica Gomez, Patsy Dominguez, Juan Cazares, Richie Cazares, Alfredo Martinez, and Eloy Orozco. The executive board is comprised of eight students chosen by the student body the previous year. This year's XO's were Martin Soltero, president, Kim Olm- stead, vice-president, Isela Romero, treasurer, Monica Gomez, secretary, Jacob Fraire, parliamentariang Donna Gunter, historian: Martha Gomez, reporter, and Mike Yeater, activities director. ln addition to the board, SC was also made up of two senators and two representatives from each class, as well as of 15 members at large. Besides coordinating Homecoming and Spring Fiesta activities, SC members also were in charge of the pep rallies and the annual Parade and Homecoming bonfire. Mr. Kourabos added that the organization strove to be sensitive to the needs of the student body and of the faculty in an effort to make school as vital and interest- ing as possible. 34 be EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS- Martin Soltero, Kim Olmstead, Monica Gomez, Isela Romero, Donna Gunter, Martha Gomez, Mike Yeater, Jacob Fraire, tcenterl Mr. Nick Kourabos. For those students who wished to express themselves in a creatively manual way, Building Trades and auto mechanics offered a unique opportunity. Under the expert guidance of Mr. John Boylan, students were given the opportu- nity to use their manual talents to build and repair items such as: weight room benches, VOCCT easels, science room faucets, office cabinets, a book drop for the library, a concession stand, and a mag- azine rack for the ROTC Dept. In April, Chris Medrano and Gerardo Rivas traveled to Houston, Texas after qualifying locally with their bench project. The boys built the bench out of a dead cot- ton-wood tree they stumbled across one day. Mr. Boylan said he was very pleased with the boys' performance, adding that if all the classrooms were filled with students like the ones in his classes, then he'd feel very confident about our future. Mr. Boylan's comments were also ech- oed by Mr. Arthur Stancliff, auto mechan- ics teacher. Mr. Stancliff's department was also represented in state competition by Art Lucero, who rebuilt an automobile transmission and by Jesus Gonzalez and Albert Morales who overhauled two auto- mobile engines. ln addition to their tasks, the boys also had to write a step-by-step procedure write-up. Mr. Stancliff added that the boys com- pleted their tasks with very little if any, teacher supervision. The Vocational Office Education class, some- times referred to as the Trailer People, is an active group of students joined by their common goal to prepare themselves for a better place in the job market. lt has a club called The Office Education Association, which is considered a part of the cur- riculum. The program is designed to simulate an office setting with students going about their various jobs. People can come into the trailer at anytime and find some students working with calculators, others taking dictation, some typing or using the transcription machines, others working on record- keeping or filing packets. The students set their own goals and it is up to them to fulfill them. The program naturally has to make money to supporttheir many activities. This year's activities included a carwash, the fashion show, and candy sales. Last year, the club sold name necklaces, conducted bake sales, and did the Popular Depart- ment Store inventory. More ideas are planned for next year. This year's class decided to have uniforms for the club. The girls were asked to come on stage at the area competitions because they looked so nice. The area competitions resulted in four wir.- ners. Area winners went to state to compete again and those winners competed nationally. Unfortu- nately, CHS members have not gone to national competition yet, but that is their goal for next year. VOE also had many interesting field trips, which included El Paso Natural Gas Co., Trans-Mountain Campus of El Paso Community College, Wang Word Processing Center, and the Computer Cen- ter at UTEP. Club members wound up the year with their annual Pool Party. It was a nice way to end the year and say good-bye to its graduating seniors. I felt that for the most part we had a real good season, said Coach Willie Tinnin, commenting on her cross coun- try team. i Even though the harriers faced tough competition against 5A schools, Coach Tinnin felt our team performed well. Our runners performed so well, in fact, that for the first time in eight years, our CC team made it to state where they placed seventh against 14 other schools. Although Coach Tinnin expects next year's team to be smaller due to the fact that some seniors will be graduating, she is hopeful that new replacements will be found. If genuinely-interested replacements, especially more girls are found, Coach Tinnin feels confident that we can have a formidable team next year. 56 ,M ,, f ,,,, ' ,, ,fig XMXFH' P 3? i zfwf ,gl K ,',, f 'A , ,W L , f Xgfcqiam, y K ' myam, ft. , ., -,A Jose Paredes and David Perez stretch before thelr Rlverslde meet wf V+ X ,xi we E x ' haf We A A x .., .. .kk- if M3 e r f - me ff T, .... Coach Minjarez, evaluated the boys overall performance like a weather report From fair to moderate Mrs. Minjarez said the team needed to con- tinue to improve. District players were Mickey Garcia and Ralph Venegas who played no. 1 doubles. Eddie Solis played no. 1 singles and Arthur Limon played no. 2 sin- gles. 64 In the girls division, Hevila Galan played in the no. 1 sin- gles, Donna Gunter and Banti Gil played in no. 1 doubles. Because CHS doesn't have any courts the netters were compelled to practice at the ele- mentary school. Commenting on the situation, Coach Minjarez said, this made things very difficult since we were unable to host any matches, which compelled the team to travel all season. After all the hard work, deadlines, afterschool-and holiday-hours, messed-up pictures, ruin- ed rolls of film, and a lot of hectic moments, we finally came out with our yearbook. Looking back we can all smile and relax - now that it's over. And as we reminisce, we would be amiss if we didn't thank the many people who helped us throughout the year. To start off with, we wish to give a world of thanks to La Tonya Martinez who unselfishly lent us her camera with which we took the majority of the pictures in this yearbook. We hope her dad won't get too upset when he finds out. We also wish to thank Andy Burton for not only lending us her camera on a couple of occasions, but also for taking a couple of the football games for us. Secondly, we wish to thank all the teachers who were very understanding and cooperative when they allowed our staff members to occasionally finish their assignments during their class. We can't forget to thank Mr. Jerry Fleming for allowing us to use one of his thermometers and we also couldn't forget to thank Mr. Don DeLaune and Taylor Publishing Co. for their patience and understanding - especially when it came down to deadline times. Thanks should also be accorded to Principal Dowell Williams for allowing us to use our facilities after school and during the holidays so that we could meet our deadlines. I would personally like to thank those hard-working staffers who gave their all, including their extra time, to help make our yearbook a reality. And last, but not least, I couldn't forget to thank Mr. Hector Castelo, yearbook sponsor, for having a lot of patience with the staff and for all the support he gave us. Thank you Mr. C. for doing a good job. Starting at 7 a.m., the busy cafe- teria crew began their day before most teachers and administrators even arrived. Before ending their day at 3:30 p.m. the ladies fed on the average of 530 people - 180 for breakfast and 350 for lunch. Manager Mrs. Dolores Diaz said the most frus- trating part of her job was stu- dents not even trying the food they worked so hard to prepare. One food item students did seem to like were the hamburgers, which Mrs. Diaz said, were among the easiest to fix. Mrs. Diaz said they received a number of complaints about the lack of variety offered, but she pointed out that the variety and quality of food was limited by the quantity and quality of food they had to work with. hm s 5-'tr Mrs. Petra Rueda and Mrs. Maria Orozco prepare the day's daily salad.
