The year began with Canuta's number one sport, football. Everyone expressed both desire and optimism as the new season began under the leadership of new head-football coach and Athletic Director, Carlos Lowen- berg. During this time the Birds experienced both hope, as in the case of playing perennial 8AA champ Alpine to a 7-'7 stand still in the first half of a contest played here at C.H .S . , and utter disappointment, losing our two greatest Rivals Gadsden and Fabens. Gadsden emerged as victor C20-125 in a game that came down to the last minutes of play but that was decided in a crucial long touchdown pass-play with only 17 seconds remaining. It was one of the few times that an Eagle team had lost its Homecoming game. Next came the heartbreaking setback in the season's final game at Fabens in the snow. The Eagles had domi- nated play throughout the entire contest and had outgained their opponent by at least two to one but then came the game's most significant play. With the Eagles leading 7 to 6 and the offense on the move, Chino Lopez handed the ball to John Lopez. Suddenly, John received a jarring blow that popped the ball out of his grasp and into the waiting arms of Wildcat Pagie Guerraro, No. 30 who outraced Eagle pursuers 61 yards into the Wildcat endzone. The Eagles made a valiant comback but all hopes ended as Lopez's pass was intercepted at the 4 with only seconds left to play. Final Score: Wildcats 12, Eagles 7.
