The year began with Canuta's number one sport, football. Everyone expressed both desire and optimism as the new season began under the leadership of new head-football coach and Athletic Director, Carlos Lowen- berg. During this time the Birds experienced both hope, as in the case of playing perennial 8AA champ Alpine to a 7-'7 stand still in the first half of a contest played here at C.H .S . , and utter disappointment, losing our two greatest Rivals Gadsden and Fabens. Gadsden emerged as victor C20-125 in a game that came down to the last minutes of play but that was decided in a crucial long touchdown pass-play with only 17 seconds remaining. It was one of the few times that an Eagle team had lost its Homecoming game. Next came the heartbreaking setback in the season's final game at Fabens in the snow. The Eagles had domi- nated play throughout the entire contest and had outgained their opponent by at least two to one but then came the game's most significant play. With the Eagles leading 7 to 6 and the offense on the move, Chino Lopez handed the ball to John Lopez. Suddenly, John received a jarring blow that popped the ball out of his grasp and into the waiting arms of Wildcat Pagie Guerraro, No. 30 who outraced Eagle pursuers 61 yards into the Wildcat endzone. The Eagles made a valiant comback but all hopes ended as Lopez's pass was intercepted at the 4 with only seconds left to play. Mrs. Sanich - Librarian Secondary Education was the best time of my life - you make life long friends: you enjoy education while achiev- ing maturity, and yet you have no responsibilities, per se. You experience your first romance: you attend your first dance: and all of a sudden poetry has a great meaning. Too bad we lose all this later in life. 'S Mr. Aguilar - Principal Education must assist stu- dents to develop abilities to plan, cope with, and success- fully affect their personal and their society's future. Students need to realize that there are alternative futures and that the future is affected by their actions in the present and their image of the future. Students must be taught and they must learn to look into their future with hope and planning, not as pawns of fate. Mrs. Martin - Math Secondary Education means that we, as teachers, have a unique opportunity to help prepare young adults to par- ticipate in the world today. It is a challenge, because, as adults, we must winnow out the necessary material and present only that which we consider most useful. It is a pleasure because, many times, we see students who have taken this knowledge and used it to benefit themselves and others. Secondary Educa- tion gives us an opportunity to contribute to the improvement of society through the improvement of individuals. Mr. Turner - Math Secondary Education is the beginning of your adult life. A person should begin planning and studying for the future. I would hope that during high school a person could obtain the necessary skills to succeed in an occupation or continue their education, in an institu- tion of higher learning. Miss Ponikvar - Band Preparing students for col- lege or jobs to make a living outside of school. lv Coach Comancho - Athletics Privileged opportunity for the young. Coach Newcomer - Athletics, English Secondary Education pro- vides me the opportunity to come in contact with a wide variety of super people including administrators, teachers and students, which is beneficial to me as a person and I hope that some of the others that come in contact with me benefit also. Mr. Vigil - Counselor The curriculum must pre- pare students either for a job or for college. The educa- tional system must be over- hauled to meet the needs of the majority and the realities of the new world of jobs- career-oriented education fol- lowed by career-exploration and followed by actual train- ing in the 11th and 12th grades. Whether people sur- vive and improve, depends upon the resolution of man's differences with himself and fellowman. We are learning everyday that many chances are leading to: alienation, hostility, powerlessness, being manipulated, unemployed, drugs, violence, suicide, col- lapse of health, and racism. Mrs. Weems - Home Ec. Secondary Education is a futhering of basic education already aquired and an exploring of new fields to find our interests. It should edu- cate in a knowledge as well as allow us to explore our likes and dislikes. Secondary edu- cation should help me cope with immediate situations and yet show a plan and valuable use for our further adulthood. It should be presented in such a manner that those involved will become active partici- pants in developing a skill or knowledge not captive laws. Mr. Perkins - English Secondary Education is the time frame in which a young person matures and realizes his attributes as well as his or her shortcomings. It is a grow- ing time - an honest time - a fun time . or-if Mrs. Hooten - History Secondary Education gives the student an opportunity to learn by themselves. Mr. McMahan - Math Secondary Education is a preparation for the future . 1 W :Q K . W--fluff' Mrs. Miller - Home Ec. Secondary Education to me means that the students should learn to function in our society after graduation. This should include every facet in life, everywhere from becoming a successful person in a personal and social sense to becoming a successful employee in the working world. Each student should make every effort to utilize his or her education to learn attitudes, skills, and techniques of becoming a suc- cessful member of society. . Mr. Salazar - Asst. Principal Secondary Education is a preparation for a better adult life, not only in terms of financial or academic success but also in terms of being able to cope with problems that arise once a person graduates from high school. at Mrs. Dozier - Business As a student in high school, Secondary Education was very very important to me. After being drilled daily by my par- ents, Young lady, if you don't get a high school educa- tion you aren't going to make it in life. I could invision all kinds of unpleasant things happening to me. From their teaching and preaching, I soon realized that secondary education is the key to bright horizons. It meant that I could go on to college, have a career in business, become a nurse, doctor, lawyer or etc. . . . The choice was mine. But without a secondary edu- cation I would not have a choice. I would have to take whatever came along in the line of work to survive. Oh, yes, secondary education to me means a BRIGHT HORI- ZON, and I thank God for all of those who had an influential part in my life. , ,, ,,,.,a-v-v 'N K Q X - S tt 1 Mr. Phillips - Science Secondary Education means getting ready spiritually, mentally, physically and psy- chologically for later life. Aim Mrs. Collins - English Learning to get along in the world and gaining some useful skills. Mr. Barcena - Health Best years of our lives. I only wish students would real- ize this. Mr. Stevens - D.E.C.A. Secondary Education means that the students should learn to stkcessfully affect their personal future. A hope that have of those who come in contact with we will have meaningful experiences that will gear them to the level of understanding of the majority of our society. Mr. Heavens - Math Secondary Education is a necessary part of a larger pro- gram designed to prepare our society to meet the challenges and responsibilites of adult- hood. Our society is so com- plex that an elementary school education is not ade- quate to prepare the future generations to satisfactorily deal with the challenging cir- cumstances which are surely to come. On the other hand, the colleges and universities are not geared to the level of understanding of the greater majority of our society. Con- sequently, the secondary edu- cation level is our best solu- tion at the present time to develop the greater majority of our society to the point where people can adequately function and acquire prerequi- sites for almost unlimited suc- cess. Mr. Villareal - History, Coach Secondary Education is a crucial time in the physical and mental development of the student. In the majority of cases, the academic and social experiences of the stu- dent serve as indicators of what life has in store for the student in the future. Because of this. -I feel students and teachers should strive towards making this interlude in life an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. 'K Mr. Gomez - Spanish, Coach Secondary Education is try- rng to prepare students to go out into society by teaching them what one must cope with to live in the adult world . Mr. Caroline - Science To grow in knowledge for preparation for entry into the adult world, physically and mentally. Comm. Harris - R.O.-T.C. Helps the individual make the transition from childhood to' adulthood by providing both social and academic experi- ences. Mrs. Nunn - Business Secondary Education is a stepping stone to a better life and future. In America, we are most fortunate that it is available to everyone regard- less of race, color, religion, or creed. It is the responsibil- ity of everyone to take advan- tage of receiving the best pos-- sible education. Miss Hanson - Special Educa- tion Your High school education is the force that pushes you forward into your future life. It is the beginning of your adulthood, the start you get here determines how far you will go in setting and reaching your goals. The high school offers the opportunities you take advantage of them. 138 W mga 'QQ Mr. Thurman - English High School is a mini-cu1- ture, a microcosm of the soci- ety that surrounds us.
