ITAS 1980 VOLUME M6N3i(lEy We are embarking on a new era. It is a time of anticipation and becoming. It is a time of anticipation because we looi ; to the future with confidence knowing who we are and what we are capable of doing. It is a time of becoming because we are in a state of meta- morphosis, leaving behind childish ideas and habits and assuming identities which reflect the true spirit of the man. Can any- one doubt us if we maintain the ideals we espouse. Truly we can say of ourselves Viriliter Age. -- ' - ■Bi ' .i. The National Forensic League is an organization that was founded over half a century ago to foster in high school students leadership training through public speaking. There are chapters in NFL throughout the nation, and Cantwell High School, this year, holds affiliate status in this national honorary speech society. In order to accomplish the organizational goals, speech contests are frequently held throughout the academic year. Students are encouraged to participate in Oxford Style Debating as well as the Lincoln- Douglas style of debate. They are also afforded the opportunity to compete in individual events such as Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Expository Speaking, Dramatic and Humorous Interpreta- tion. Community organizations such as the Lions Club, Optimists, and Rotary Club all have speech contests where in the student speaker may compete. The officers of NFL were: President, Mario J. Waldor, Vice-President, Vincent Valdez, and Secretary. Ernest Gomez, The advisor was Mr. Leonardo S. Regalado. 108 C.S.F. PREPARES STUDENTS FOR 80 ' S ' . Back Row, L-R: A. Huerta. M.Jimenez. L. Cantwell ' s chapter of CSF 507 is only one chapter in this state-wide organization. CSF was founded over fifty years ago to give recognition to students who achieved, academically, in high school. Requirements to enter CSF are high; a student must have a 3.75 in solid subjects. In addition to academic recognition, CSF attempts to instill in each member the Federation motto which is Scholarship Through Service. To that end, members are encouraged to utilize their talents for the betterment of society. Most often, CSF members engage in a tutoring program in their respective schools Throughout the year, members are encouraged to attend field trips that are educational in nature. In the Spring, the annual CSF Conference is held. This year the site of the conference was UC Urvine. The officers of CSF were: President, Paul Lee; Vice-President. David Sirias; Secretary. Martin Springer. The advisor was Mr. Leonardo S. Regalado. 109 CHEERLEADERS GIVE THE CARDS A BOOST Back Row, L-R: L. Aguilar, L. Navarro, A. Perez, C. Yamashita, Top Row: M. Griego, C. Godoy, A. The Cardinals opened the season with three non- League victories over Santa Paula, Montebello and Keppel. They then suffered three tough losses to St. Anthony, St. Genevieve and Salesian. The Cards rebounded with a victory over Verbum Dei. At Homecoming Coach Cullen-Carroll ' s Varsity made it a happy occasion with a 13-12 victory over Daniel Murphy. The final two games against Serra and Mary Star were two hard fought contests with the Cardinals coming up short both times. Even though the Cardinals had only three return- mg starters m Peter Lavin, Victor Vargas and Joey Plspinosa, t hey put forth a valient effort to finish with a .500 season. Offensively, the Card leaders were Victor Vargas and Peter Lavin. Defensive leaders were All-League selections George Ibarra, Frank Rivera and signal caller Manuel Duran. The team was led by M.V.P. quarter back Chris Lopez who threw for 12 T.D. passes and the running of the J.V. ' s best offensive player Paul Garcia. The defense was anchored by standout Eddie Jimenez as middle linebacker. Additional honors went to Tony Villareal (Coaches Award) and Dimitri Haeff (Most Improved). Overall, the J.V. Even though the freshman football team lacked the punch in offense, they made up for it in defense. Our opponents only scored 24 points through the whole sea- son. That ' s a spectacular goal for a freshman football team. These kids were proud of their defense because they believed in it. This Cardinal team had a great bunch of kids who were willing to learn but couldn ' t get it together. I ' m sure they learned something about foot- ball, and they ' re going to be back next year. Leadership, aggressive play, and teamwork were the three main aspects that made this team click. Team captain Manuel Duran, with his aggressive style, lead the way on defense. The remamder of the squad seemed to adopt his fast moving tempo, and before long the offense was playing as well as the defense. There were many team as well as individual high- lights this past season. The 9-0 shellacking of Sale- sian on January 2 and the two overtime wins against Murphy were among the biggest. Individually, sophomore forward Doug Perales captured the League M.V.P. honors. He was also a member of the All-League first team, as were tea- mates Fernie Gomez, Phil Avila, and Ricky Castro. Members of the second team included: Manuel Duran, Paul Lee, Ben Cevallos, Ruben Lopez and Randy Hew. Cantwell Soccer 1980 - It was a very good year.
