The Council takes charge of student body functions (Montebello Hoat, food concert, carnival) and takes action on student suggestions and ideas. One of the most important projects of this school year was the distribution of a questionnaire to the students. The questionnaire was used by the westwern Association of Schools and Colleges in the overall accreditation of our school. The officers and the presidents then compiled a separate student evaluation of Cantwell. Over the years the guard has grown in numbers, responsibility and exper- ience. With this growth came many changes: new uniforms, radio equipment and security at football games. In 1974 one female member joined the Color Guard as a radio dispatcher and Commu- nication coordinator. We now have a new female dispatcher in Sgt. Rosemary Mantel from Sacred Heart of Mary H.S. The Color Guard has raised money through parking fees at football games for many worthwhile projects. A new P. A. system is only one of the improve- ments. They also have given the school 1st and 2nd place trophies through par- ticipation in the Montebello Parade. 126 Guard 127 128 129 V e r 1 t a s L-R: D. Lai, J. Pedrosa, R. Gurrola, D. Fierro, R. Seven seniors, new to the yearbook, joined the staff, and a profes- sional studio was commissioned for photography. The combined efforts and cooperation of all re- sulted in the 1978 VERITAS. Danny Fierro Moderator ' s notes: This year has been a much more enjoyable year as far as working on the yearbook. Much of the credit has to be given to Mr. Clutter whose organization- al talents became indispensible for the production of this book. We will miss the presence of Mr. Clutter for next year as he will no longer be at Cantwell. We wish him success on his new job. The staff also had a number of seniors who provided their talents in giving us a creative and innovative yearbook. We had several returning staff members who as seniors will be an asset to the 1979 yearbook next year. I was very pleased at the turnout of students who went out for yearbook this year. Although some only worked on a part-time basis, taking pictures or drawing layouts, their efforts cannot be minimized. Everyone contributed to the total success of the 1978 VERITAS. Br. Varilla Moderator ' s notes: I would like to thank the faculty and the entire student body for the cooperation in helping me put together one of the best yearbooks at Cantwell. Without this type of help it would be impossible for the yearbook staff to put a good yearbook out. The 1978 Veritas began last June when ID pictures were taken and then continued through July for Senior portraits. By the time September came a large portion of the book had been completed. Without the assistance of Br. Varilla the yearbook may not have been completed. Thanks again for all the help. Mr. R. J. Starting the season this year, new coach Frank Pomykata knew there was a nucleus of returning ballplayers to field a representable Varsity Basket- ball team. Led by returning starters Duanc Castle and Robert Samario, the Cardinals completed a preseason record of six wins and seven losses. The six wins included highly ranked Whittier, Villa Park, and rival C.LF. champion contender Cathedral High School. The Camino Real League contests proved to be much tougher competition for the Car- dinals. After a disappointing first round record of one win and four losses, the Cards bounced back to play much improved basketball in the second round. Even though the record again was one win and four losses, Cantwell avenged its previous loss to St. Ber- nards with a 46-44 win. The Cards also played a tough game against Serra and battled Daniel Murphy in double overtime before losing 59-57 on a last second shot. Season honors went to Duane Castle and Robert Samario. They played very exciting bas- ketball games with their biggest wins of the year over tough teams such as St. John Bosco, St. Fran- cis, Mater Dei, and their thrilling 3 overtime vic- tory over Serra. As the team went into the conference schedule, hopes were high. However, playing in one of the best conferences in the nation the Cards found winning a formidable task. They finished their conference schedule with a 3 win 7 lose record. The 7 losses were not indicative of how well the team played. The Cards almost up- set such powers as Verbum Dei, Scrra and Daniel Murphy with a never-say-die attitude. The season culminated in a resounding 3! point victory over rival Salesian in the last game of the roundball sea- son. F ' oilowing an opening season loss to Montcbello, the Cardinals scored four straight shutout wins a- gainst Oxnard, St. Anthony, Salesian and Murphy. The next week saw the varsity lose to Vcrbum Dei in a tough defensive battle. For homecoming an out- standing comeback fell short as the Cardinals lied Scrra 6-6 but succeeded beating St. Bernard 21-6 the following week. The last game of the year saw the team face Bishop Montgomery for the league championship. In a tight hard fought contest the Car- dinals were defeated 7-3. The Cantwell defense, led by Bill Barrera, Keith Jones, Louie Vargas, Phil Her- nandez and Barney .Solomon had an outstanding year. They held five opponents to less than 100 yds. total offense, recorded four shutouts and gave up no more than one touchdown. ' s showed much improvement winning their first two games. However, those victories were short lived. Hampered by changes in the coaching staff the final outcome of the season was less than expect- ed. The record for the .LV. ' s was 2 wins, 6 losses and a tie. One of the more outstanding players on the J.V. team was Andy Lujan. As defensive linebacker he was able with the help of defensive players John Sauceda. Rudy Gutierrez and Joey Espinoza to con- tain Cantwell opponents. Offensively, the quickness and alertness of the backfield, led by Victor Vargas, offered a counterbalance to the aggressiveness of the defense. Martin Del Campo, B. Vela, E. Garcia, J. Amezquita The Varsity Soccer team played better than .500 ball this year. The record was 10 wins, 5 losses and 3 ties. Most of the wins were in the beginning during the rainy season. The biggest win was against Bishop Montgomery. Behind 3-1 at the half, Cantwcll came back to win the game 4-3. The Most Valuable Player award went to Fd. Garcia who scored the most num- ber of points against Cantwell ' s opponents. Follow- ing the games against Salesian and Vcrbum Dei, Cantwell went into a slump. Toward the end of the year the offense became inconsistent. Though close to winning in a number of games, Cantwell evcnlually succumbed, usually only by one point. Cantwell placed third in the league and almost got into the playoffs. Overall, this has been one of the best sea- sons Cantwell has had. 156 ■ Varsity Soccer 1 CHS 1 il P 0pp. 7 Pius V. 2 •7 f ( .imp Mun 2 Monlebcllo Pius X 1 - 2 7 t . 2 4 Hosco Tech Salesian 2 4 1 Hishop Monlgomcry .Scrra 3 3 l.oNola 2 3 Si. At the start the players weren ' t ready to handle the competitors due to the lack of experience common among first year players. Better sportsmanship, experience and sticking with the fundamentals of the game were reasons for why the J.V. ' s improved. Even though the overall record left much to be desired, the .I.V. ' s benefitted from the season and did far better than last year ' s J.V. ' s who won only a couple of games. Phil Avila, Alex Del Campo, and Fernando Gomez were some of the more outstanding players on the team this year. David Sirias was the most improved player on the team. 158 J.V.
