John D. Carr in memory and gratitude of the years of service to God and his students as a Christian Brother. He was born in Kil- common Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland in April, 1908. At the age of 16 he entered the Congregation. Two years later in May, 1926 he received the habit and then finished his scholasticate in September, 1927. A year later in 1928 Br. Carr was assigned to a position in St. John ' s Newfoundland. This was to begin his life ' s work in the North American continent. He has worked at Br. Rice High School in New York, Leo High School in Chicago, St. Laurence High School in Oaklawn, Illinois and here at Cantwell teaching social studies and religion. Brother has been at Cantwell since 1971 pri- marily as a religion teacher. Br. Carr has left a lasting impression in terms of hard work and perseverance In each of his students by his example in the classroom. On April 16, 1974 Br. Carr celebrated his Golden Jubilee at Cantwell as a man of God and an educator of youth. ! It has seen individual endeavors that have won school acclaim. However, many achievements have gone unnoticed. The graduates have taken the good with the bad, have withstood change, and they have become the better for it. May this year ' s graduates leave with the confidence of a job well done. 13 5. Exceeds Expectations 122 Senior Citizens ' Day During December, seniors from the Christian Life class invited 25 elderly people from St. Ann ' s Home for the Aged to spend a day at Cantwell. Each of the elderly persons was escorted by a senior to various classes, to Mass and finally to a lunch and entertainment that had been ar- ranged by the Seniors. Our elderly friends turned out to be lively conversationalists and fun -loving people. Cepeda, G. Bacio. Even though the varsity football team did not live up to their expectations this past season, they still performed admirably. After two t ough losses at the beginning of the year, the Cardinals bounced back to place third in the Camino Real League and were in contention for a playoff spot until the final weeks of the season. The Cardinals were led by the tough defensive play of Hector Samario, Joe Staub, who was the strength of both the offensive and defensive lines, and John Avalos whose consistent hard-hitting play on both offense and defense earned him the M.V.P. for 1976. Joe Barrera and Ray Lugo were the heart of the Cardinal offense while John Vargas and Bill Barrera were the backbone of the defense. After opening the league games with a victory the Cards went into a slump which cost them the next three games. The Cards then came back to win their last three games and finished fourth in the Camino Real League. The superior overall playing of Gabriel Alvarez Earned Him the N4.V. P. award in the course of the season. Also noteworthy was the hard hitting play of Daniel Perry which earned him the Best Defensive Player Award. Gonzales. The freshman football team set high goals for themselves at the beginning of the sea- son and through hard work and dedication they met them. The freshman Cards had a winning season in the Camino Real League with six wins to one loss which gave them the league championship. The Cards owe their winning season to having a strong defensive line led by the tough playing of John Sauceda which kept their opponents from scoring in five of their victories. The offensive plays led by Gary Sandoval proved to be effective in putting the Cards on top. The team showed a great deal of talent but one individual V. Vargas through his consistently tough play- ing earned the Most Valuable Player award this season. The Cantwell Varsity basketball team showed an enormous amount of spirit. The team started out slowly, but by the begin- ning of the league season the Cardinals de- veloped into one of the better teams. The record was 7 wins and 7 loses in league play and they finished 4th in the Camino Real League. The seniors on this team dis- played great leadership which helped keep up the team spirit for every game. John Avalos was the leading scorer. Duane Castle and Co-Captain Bobby Alvarado were the top rebounders. The squad was com- prised of 15 members -9 Juniors and 6 Sopho- mores -with everyone playing an important role in being Cantwell ' s most successful bas- ketball team this season. The overall record of 14 wins and 8 losses included an 8 win-6 loss and fourth place finish in the league, and a first place finish in the San Gabriel Christ- mas Tournament. Led by Juniors Kevin Barnitt, Phil Burciaga, and Robert Gaitan, the Cantwell Junior Varsity displayed quick- ness and excellent shooting during their game play. This year ' s Freshman Basketball team con- sisted of only eight inexperienced young men who through their very hard wo rk and per- sonal sacrifices were molded into the most improved freshman basketball team in the Camino Real League. Under the leadership of their coach, Ed Coyle, and able assistance of coach, Bro. W. F. Kramer, the fresh- man team won 8 of their league games losing 6 of them. Their season record was an im- pressive 12 wins and 8 losses.
