HUNT F.S.C.H This past year one of our faculty members marked fifty years of dedicated service to the youth of four countries . Only four of these fifty years have been spent here at Cantwell, nevertheless they have been memorable and filled with many hours of devoted work on our behalf. It is for this reason that we, the students of Cantwell, dedicate our i966 annual , Veritas, to our school librarian, Rev . Brother J .C. Hunt. Under Brother Hunt's direction, the library has undergone many improvements. In addition to his library work, Brother has found time to direct our promising chess team. He has shown his interest in all of Cantwell's activity ranging from basketball to public speaking. Then too, there were times we tried his patience when a few forgetful ones failed to return books on time. In conclusion may we say, not only for ourselves, but also for a generation of students in England, Ireland, and Canadaz' Our sincere thanks for all your unselfish and devoted work . ,.,.- L ,Admiuisfra tion li - ef!-:Ee l 4-' .. if r , i s 1 J... ' , W , 3 6l7d6'fI Kabul kelires Mr. Greg Kabat, a native of Wisconsin, came to Cantwell High on September 8, 1948, as a teacher and a coach . Yet through the years he has become much more to us and now he stands a legend at Cantwell, for this year he coached his last football game, although he will remain as a teacher. Before coming to Cantwell, Mr. Kabat maiored at the Uni- versity of Wisconsin in teaching and physical education . Here he became an All-American guard, playing tackle, center, and linebacker on various occasions. He was also both an outstand- int athlete in track, leading the team with his sprinting, discus throwing, and shot putting, and a star player on the water polo and basketball teams. When Mr. Kabat started here in the school's third year of existence, there was only a dirt field . The school had very few facilities, even less equipment, and no showers or field- house. Through the years Mr. Kabat was personally involved in obtaining these plus the lights, stands, blocking sled, tack- ing stand, and innumerable other items. At Cantwell, Mr. Kabat carried on his tradition of excel- lence in all his endeavors. As varsity football coach, he com- piled an overall winning record through his 18 years of service, accomplishing the amazing feat of coaching 15 straight years without a losing season . Yet decidely superior to this record is his part in foming men out of boys for I8 years. Far above and beyond his win-loss record, he has given much more to Cant- well-himself. Mr. Kabat is stern and strict, truly the captain of his ship, whether it be on the football field, in the class- room, or otherwise. He instructs as much by his actions as by his words . Yes, Mr. Kabat is as much a part of Cantwell High School as the very earth it stands on. Even though he will no longer coach our football team, he will remain a legend and a builder of men at Cantwell. -sl Mr. Kabat speaks at the Football Banquet in his hs Mr. Kabat introduces the varsity team at a rally. This year the Cardinal season exposed the true thorn in the Varsity team's side . . .inexperience . With only a few backs of any size and experience, and even fewer linemen, our Cards struggled through a season of bright spots and inevitable defeats. Desire and team effort proved to be the keynote in most of the Football team 's accomplishments . The first contest against Cathedral was encouraging although the Cardinals, with victory in sight, were turned back at the last moment. Sou th Pasadena then handed Cantwell one of its worst defeats, but undaunted the team rebounded to defeat Salesian's swift Mustangs. The Mission team quickly dismissed the hopes of two consecutive vic- tories. As the first league game against Verbum Dei approached, it was obvious the pass-catching of All-League honorable mention Bob Romero and the running abilities of Bob Davy and next year's captain Don Bruich would be the only Card offense. With only these weapons all the league games were lost. Verbum was a close and controversial game as Cantwell completely stopped them except for two disasterous plays. C.l .F. champions, Mater Dei, were clearly too much for our undermanned team but commendable games were played against ranked Servite and St. Paul . The Cardinals scored more points against these powerhouses than any other teams. Piux X was a hard-fought game with the Cardinals winning the battle in the line but coming out behind in the scoreboard . Offensively Dan Bruich and Bob Romero already mentioned were standouts and Mark Paulin and Vince Ochoa must also be commended . Tailbacks Bob Davy, Steve Gilles, and end Jerry Lopez also sparkled occasionally . ' Defensively Rick Smith and Bob De Alba led the front wall charge with Rich Castro and Ray Carreon supporting in back. flew 'ffl '-H, s af1:r.,fQg:.-5 -f L,-, 2' .' , .QL L 1,71 , ,e . The Cardinal Frosh, although off to a poor start against Cathedral and St. Francis, came back very strong to defeat Fneir next three opponents, Salesian, Mission, and Verbum Dei. The next two weeks were low points in the Frosh season as they were nipped by Mater Dei and Pius X. After switching a few positions and working hard on plays during the next week of practice, the Frosh came back to romp over Servite. With this victory, the championship of the Angelus League was in sight, but in the final and deciding game against St. Paul, who were Unscored upon until the Frosh played them, the Frosh were defeated i2 - 6. Thus ended the i965 season, which produced a near championship team and an able group of Future J .V. and varsity players. The Cardinals were led by co-captains Dave Taylor and Steve Smith . Other starters included Kent Belarde, Alfred Abadie, Steve Haluska, Rich Wall, Dave Paulin, Mike Villa, and John Tullius. Much credit is also due to Mr. Takeuchi and his assistant coaches for their fine efforts in pro- ducing an outstanding team . ,Angelus league 60-Khampious At the beginning of basketball season the Cantwell fans had two great questions to be answered . First, whether a starting five, with only one man over six feet, had enough talent, spirit, hustle and determination to be victorious. Second, whether a coach with limited experience could organize and lead this team to an Angelus League Championship. Led by Captain Gene Reames, fMost Valuable Player in the Angelus League and All-League First Teaml, the Cardinal quintet quickly sup- plied the answer to the first question . They compensated for their lack of height with a devastating full court press, speed and deadly outside shooting. Each member did his part in contributing to the unity of his team. The Big men of this team drive for victory were: All-League Guard Gene Reames, l4 point average: All-League Forward Bob Ro- mero, ll point average, our Mr, Defense Forward Jerry Lopezp Center Bob Davy, QAII-League Honorable Mention, and leading re- bounderf and finally Earl Hamby and Ernie Barbosa. Other spirited members of the team were Mike Nuanes, Mike Sullivan, Gary Proven- zona, Mike Betancourt, Don Rizzi, Andy Armiio and John Reina. Yet none of this would have been possible without the talents of our own Mr. Neil Edwards. He provided the answer to the fans' second question by inspiring a new spirit in the school, his unselfish hard efforts, and dedication to victory . YQ. Although every team but one was much larger, Rocky Paulin, Ed Guzman, and Robert Lopez pulled in a good share of rebounds . Led by the fine shooting of Al Caparella, with a game high of 31, Rene Romero and Greg Falletta, the team rolled to a 9-3 record prior to the league opener. The Cards chalked up a 3-O league mark before traveling to St. Paul . Here they were nipped by the Swordsmen . Next week the Cards were also beaten by host Verbum Dei. But the team never let down and it wasn't until the last game that the championship was decided . Trailing the entire game, Cantwell closed the gap by 6 in the fourth quarter but the Cards slowed down here and St. Paul pulled away to nab the champion- ship. This year's track team, with a combination of consistent devel- opment, strong spirit, and fine coaching, has produced a very suc- cessful season, Cantwell, led by its outstanding sprinters, field, and distance men, was a strong contender in the Angelus League. Win or lose the squad would never give up and would always put out every bit of energy they possessed. The spike team this year acquired the capable coaching of the Stupey brothers. Pete Stupey handled those athletes in the sprints and field events while Joe coached our always excellent distance men. Together these two men created a well conditioned, hustling track team, which was eager to get every possible point. The Varsity was supported by many fine track and field men. Tom Arranaga in the 100 and 220, Richard Soria in the 220 and 440, George Belarde in the 440 and RobertJimenez in the 880, all aided in establishing a team victory. In the distance runs the team was sparked in the mile by Vince Rhinehart, Jose Abril , and Bill Delphin, and in the two mile by Fred Kosinski, Bob Corona, and Richard Elisoldez. Danny Sanchez consistently gave a good showing in the hurdles. The high iump and pole vault success de- pended on both George Rinehart and Pat Jones. Chris Berru and Tom Arranaga usually placed high in the long jump. Bob De Alba and John Reina were the varsity's two most capable shot putters. The relay team, composed of Sanchez, Belarde, Soria, and Arran- aga, added to the team's overall strength . The J .V. team, although not as strong as last year's champion- ship club, gave an outstanding showing in all their meets. Cant- well received excellent pertormances from such track men as: Tom Davey and Nick Stupey in the hurdles, Bob Crook in the pole vault, Doug Young in the shot put, Victor Cano in the broad iump, AI Nahara in the 660, and Fred Padilla and Rene Romero in the 1320. The Cee team, although lacking depth, nevertheless completed the season with a Fine record . The team consisted of talented trackmen such as: Richard Elias and Kent Belardi in the sprints, Ed Nahara and John Lizzi in the 660, John Martinez and Robert Mares in the 1320, and Robert Lopez and Jim Fraser in the long iump and high iump. 9? Seniors Jim Samsing - most improved player - and Bob Minor are contin- uous low scorers, always being a threat to take individual low scoring honors. Sopho- more Ted Elias, up from the J.V.'s, also has a rapidly improving game and average. ln Fact the scoring average of the team to date is approximately 37.5 strokes for nine holes.- ln a striking comparison, pro golfers average around 36 For nine holes. Composed of many charitable fathers and mothers of Cantwell students, this year's Parents Club has provided the school with many benefits obtained from co-operation between faculty and parents. The organization enables the parents not only to be- come better acquainted with each other, but with the faculty as well. Besides serving as this link between faculty and par- ents, the club graciously donates their time and energy to- ward sponsoring many fund raising events. These proiects both educational and social, have greatly benefited the student body . The Cantwell Parents Club, under the moderation of Br. J .A. Houlihan consisted of a very capable and generous board of directors such as: Mr. Tony Martinez, president, Mrs. Gilles and Mr. Williams, vice-presidents, Mrs. Williams, secretary, Mr. Troughton, treasurer. With such fine leadership, the organization was able to undertake the varied activities which arose during the school year. The first maior proiect on the Parents Club agenda this year, was the annual Christmas Tree sale . Under the direction of chairman, Mr. Gray, the sale was its usual success. The Christmas party for the Brothers, organized by Mr. and Mrs. Quintero, was a very enjoyable and appreciated evening. The highlight of the mothers in the club was the ever popular Fashion Show, which was under the direction of Mrs. Perry and Mrs. Bradley. The Cantwell Carnival always the most re- warding of the year's festivities, was managed by Mr .Williams . These are but a few of the many necessary and appreciated activities sponsored by our Parents Club. We therefore would like to give them our heartfelt thanks for their tremendous time and effort so willingly donated throughout the year . The 'WOrCl government is clearly defined as a system of rule. lt logically follows a student governments' aim is to furnish not only a ruling body which is equal to those governed, but also to discover and impliment the requests or needs presented . ln ac- complishing this achievement the body serves as a bridge between Faculty and student. So it was with the Cantwell Student Council ot i965-66. Working under a newly written Con- stitution a newness ot purpose and dedication arose in the ranks of its members. The Body took on the responsibility of rule and improved the quality of the school both in appearance and in mental atti- tude . Producing major improvement programs such as a scholarship award, a campus beautification project, and a spirit revival surge were but a Few of the numerous accomplishments in the Student Council. The form of Student Gove1'nment in Cantwell High School was active this year creating a newly aware but strong base from which to build . As a government it created a system of organized rule. They conducted various meetings with men of different businesses and professions, that were open to any student interested. One of these meetings was with a Mr. Robert Sharf, a special agent of the F.B.I .
