Third Row: Ed McDermott, Pat Davy, Ed Terrell, Bob Guzman, Mike Novicki, Bill Gonzales, Tom Closser, Al Lopez, Joe O'Laughlin, Another Rough Season . . As'with recent football seasons hopes were high that Cantweli's team could return again to a winning season. But as was evidenced early in spring, Cantwell N lacked the depth which is so important to any football team. And so, faced with the prospects of another long season, Coach Kabal and assistant coach Bob Stengall worked the team on desire, a factor equally as important as strength or speed in any football game. The fruits of our team's efforts were clouded in their first game by a powerful Cathedral team which handed us a 'I9-0 defeat. Faced with an even stronger team in South Pasadena the Cantwell team had to overcome the discouragement of an initial defeat. The loss of the CardinaI's first string guard larry Ubellaz fired up the team. They went on to grind out huge chunks of yardage in playing their most brilliant game of the year. What had begun in a feeling of unsureness ended that night in a satisfaction of the sport which could come only through such a team effort. Despite our loss to South Pasadena we had won a spirit which was evident in all of the remaining games of the season. Typical of Cantwell's spirit was the versatile co-captain, Mike Urban, who played end, tackle, and tailback on offense as well as defensive end and line- backer. Another of Cantwell's co-captains, Dennis Kelly, displayed his determi- nation by overcoming an early season iniury to ploy consistent and all-out foot- ball in every game. The Card's other co-captain Raul Olivas lived up to expec- tations with his aggressive line play. But probably the most representative in football of everything that is Cant- well this year was Frank Arciero. Butch combined his skill of the game with an unsurpassed individual effort which eventually won him the respect of his opponents in every game as well as a berth on the first string All-League team as linebacker. Another all-around man from Cantwell this year was AI Lopez. Playing at blocking-back, the most difficult position on the field, AI used his experience well in quickly showing that he could handle the blocking assign- ments as well as lead the offensive team. A fine punt returner as well as pass reeciver and defensive back this year was Carlos Marquez. Pat Davy, playing at defensive end, proved a strong asset lo the team by his presence at this position. CantweIl's sizeable first l string center George Schwab showed his contributions through his effort as winner of the Senior award for most improved player. Greg Pawlik showed that size and speed were not the only things that mattered in football as he worked l his way to a position on the defensive team by his sheer effort. Turning in a good season this year was Richard Freedland, who played beyond his expecta- tions on the defensive line. Two more of our seniors turned in exceptionally ood omes this ear: Mike Novicki, in the Mater Dei game, and Joe Quintero Couch Kabul' and Coach Slengal reflect ?n theiell Garden: game, which Cantwell won 20-14. concern over Cardinal play. l t Mark Paulm a promrsmg sophomore back reaches hugh fo snare a pass from Frank Arclero Mlke Urban grabs a short pass over the center for ca sux yard gcun aga1nstServlfe W Cardinals Show Determination it--ww 'Jw-f - -sail, ,451 my asf, ,' VARSITY FOOTBALL SCORES Cantwell Opp. O Cathedral I9 7 So. They did not, however, play like a group of individuals, but rather as a team in the real sense of the word, Led by co-captains Dan Bruich, Dan Cooper, and Chris Berru and ioined by Mike Galardo, Bob Davy, Randy Yonai, Ron Vas- quez, Art Vallaio loffensive backsl and Dave Guerra, Art Salas, Charlie Gavoian, Doug Young, Dick Dewberry, Ernie Bencomo, Tom Nolan, and Joe Manarez llinemenl the team developed and made progress to the point 'that it was a dan- gerous threat to any opposing team, The high- light of the season was the defeat of Servite, one of the top contenders for the championship, Excellent blocking led the Cardinals to a first down on this play. 58 The Cee team like the varslty and J V s got off to a bad start losmg thear flrst game to Saint Paul s their second against Mater Den and their third agamst Servrte But unluke the JV s and varslty un the last half of the season they started wm nmg Flrst a vlctory against Servlte and the final two contests against Saleslan The team was led by Joe Gallego tallback who did an outstanding lob of passing and running Co captains of the team were Tom Quugly and Steve Molina Tom Arranga who sparked the team by his breakaway running led the team m the fmal vuctorles Strong support through the season was given by George Belarde defensive safety Mlke Lodata defenslve safety Ray Molma lmebacker Mlke Doak defensive end Gary O Hane snon offensive guard ANTWELL ANTWELL ANTWELL ANTWELL ANTWELL ANTWELL ANTWELL ANTVVELL rv!-vw J 'Mn-is awww-4-'df ee Z SCORES St Pauls Mater Del Servnte St Paul s Mater Del Servute Salesuan Saleslan .gmrifmtif 1. Through hard work the team won more meets than it lost and ended the ' season with a 5-4 record. The heart of the team was composed of seniors who led the team throughout the year. The Var- sity is made up of the following: Tom Barbosa, Jerry Faustinos, Fred Kosinski, Mark Leon, Ralph Chavez, Rich Elizaldez, and Vince Rinehart, The team' is young since 5 of the members are under- classmen. Next year the Varsity will be complimented by the up and coming J,V. team which only dropped three meets the entire year, Ruben Escobosa, Ter- ry Smith, Bob Corona, George Rinehart, Ed Moore, Art Noz, Rene Estrada, and Fred Reyes were the backbone of the J.V. team. The' Varsity team started the year on a winning note by beating in practice meets Bishop Amat and South Pasadena. The team charged into the Catholic League competition with high hopes, They were not to be denied as they easily ran over Serra, The team was disappointed as they lost to Saint Anthony's and Pius X. All hope was not lost as the team bounced back to-defeat Mt. Car- . mel and again the team lost two meets in a row i to Notre Dame and Cathedral, The season was completed with a great flare when the team up- set Loyola and showed its great potential. This defeat caused Loyola to lose a tie for first place in the league. That was the cry of the 1965 edition of the Cantwell Varsity Bas- ketball team, Under the excellent coaching of Mr. Sal Gayton and led by team captain Tom Botana, the Cardinal quintet experienced an excellent season, though a disappointing one to the players and their coach. With ideas of a League Championship and C.I.F. laurels in mind, they blazed to victory in their first 5 games of the season, including victories over Catholic League champions, Loyola, and Rio Hondo League champions San Marino. With a strong offense and a devastating full court defense, the Cantwell men entered the league with a fine 7-3 record, and were in the heart of the league race until the second of the last game of the season. The season highpoint was the defeat of the sup- posedly invincible Monarchs of Mater Dei on Cantwell's home court, Great credit must be given to Pat O'Brian, Tom Botana, Bob Ro- mero, Jerry Lopez, Tom Matush, Mike Urban, Bill Reames, Earl Hamby, Tom Barbosa, Bob Davy, Rick Valdez, Mike Nuanes, Ray Carreon, and Gary Provezano. The J.V. squad this year proved to be a balanced team with 'stress on strength and shooting ability, The three cornerstones of strength on the team were the fearsome John Reina, Mike Sullivan, and Joe Monar- rez. John Reina is considered one of the best if not the best rebounder of the league with a game high of l7 grabs. Mike.Sulli- van showed his versatility by scoring a game high of i6 and Joe Monarrez showed great potential as a sophomore, The top gunners of the team were Gene Reames, Ernie Bar- bosa, and Don Rizzi. Gene Reames proved to be the leading scorer with a high of 31 and the chief playmaker. Ernie Barbosa showed great outside shooting with a con- sistent average of 12 points, Don Rizzi was the smallest forward in the league but his clutch performances did not show it with an overall average of ll points. Mark Pau- lin supplied the necessary utility strength with superb playing, Coach Neil Edwards made the team what it was and finished the season with a fine record and second place. This team surely will make the J.V, grade and certainly another championship club. Highlights of the season were the fine rebounding and shooting of Andy Armiio with a game high of 315 domination ofthe boards by big Mike Bentancourt, Eddie Staub, and Joe Gallegog and the great pass- ing and playmaking of Vaughn Delphin, Steve Molina, and Charles Gloria, This championship squad illustrated three characteristics of a great balanced team: strong rebounding, great defense, and ef- fective shooting. The few ath- letes that compose our team are determined to capture at least one championship fthe Beeesl and give all-out efforts, thus being recognized as tough competitors by the league. Examples of such competitors in the Varsity squad are Bob Cota, Curtis Boxley, Bob Davey, Albert Aviles, Jerry Faustinos, Tony Sandoval, Bob De Alba, Gil Apodoca, Fred Kosinski, and Terry Smith. This team is gifted with great tal- ent that turns out great individual performances but lacks the full body of a stfong team due to the poor turnout of the students. CantweIl's Bees, as usual, has turned out a potential championship club, They are a very well balanced team supplied with the neces- sary drive needed to carry them all the way. The team consists of such talent as: Rich Eliz- aldez, Manuel Valle, Bob Romero, Bob Jimenez, Vince and George Rhinehart, Albert Cercedes, V Mark Goebal, Marcus Leon, Rich Castro, Tom ' Arranaga, Richard Soria, Dan Sanchez, Garry ' Provenzano, and Rick Proczka. This group sure- ly will develop a strong Varsity in years to , come. Pat Davy is up and away in thc long iump competition. The Cees this year may be defined as a team with spirit and without support. Track is a sport of guts and this group most convincingly qualifies. Even though the Cees have had a rough season, they work diligently and faithfully every week illustrating supreme effort on their part. This sort of team will surely develop and mature to give us good future potential. Some outstanding members of this team are Ralph Chavez Doug Young, and but they surely try The reason for Bob Corona, Bill Delphin, Nick Stupey, Chris Berru, Chris Barron, Mark Paulin. These few cannot carry the whole team to victory, . Much more support will not hurt our teaml , f every victory must be credited to Mr. Armando Lopez and Mr. Greg Kabat. Their undaunted desire for victory carried them through the season with a fine record. Led by co-captains Frank Arciero and Pat O'Brian's fantastic play and under the coach- ing of Brother Reynia, this year's team was exciting, colorful, and successful. With a strong returning nucleus, Cantwell looks for- ward to a great '66 season and the C.l.F. title. J.V.'s Finish Winning A Season Cantwell has been known throughout the years as a school which produces some of the best baseball teams in the C,l.F. The reason for such outstanding teams is the early developing, both mentally and physically, in the J.V. squad. This year is no exception to the tradition. Under the rigorous training of Coach Stangle, who is noted for his well conditioned teams, the squad is ready to fill in where last year's team ended, as League Champs! The basis- to every baseball team is the pitching staff and this role is filled out strongly by Lee Bentencourt, Sean Haley, Randy Schell, and Caparella. Few balls can penetrate through the superb infield of John Reina- first base, Dan Bruick-second base, Tom Quigley-shorh stop, and Eddie Venezuela-third base, The men behind the plate are big Tony Caruso and Joe Reinag The talent in the outfield is overwhelming. The needed power and strong arms are supplied by Mike Shaaf, Steve Tumasian, and Charles Gloria. The alert and ready utility composes of David Guerra, Daniel Cooper, Craig Kiefer, Bob Quin- tero, Mike Nuanes, and Jim Ventrigilia. The statue of St. Philipe de Jesus, the school's patron saint, was blessed in February. Our Sodality has shown itself as a good' will missionary at such activities as the monthly masses at the several parishes and at the Guadelupe Procession, They presented them- selves excellently at Mary's Hour, in May. In March, many new members of the Sodality made their Act of Consecration, by which they became per- manent members of the Sodality. The days of recollection have been extremely well observed. Besides the work of the Sodality, the student body also does several things of a religious na-- ture. The student body' participates in three days ot recollection a year. Now Cantwell's squad of ora- tors is known and feared throughout the state. lts list of accomplishments is staggering. At the University of San Francisco, Cantwell with a small squad surpassed every Southern California team and lost by only a few points to a,Northern group with twice the entrants. Just a 'few of theunprecedented successes are: l.l gathering two sweepstakes trophies in our first year in speech, 2.l in barely a year and a half, geathering six honors of excellence in the prestigious National Forensic League, 3l ln that same short time, acquir- ing two honors of distinction in the N.F.L. The one man who has worked so hard and so suc- cessfully 'For these awards is Br. R, E, Tompkins, Starting from scratch, he built up a group of iuniors, who were starting two years late, into a potent squad of speak- ers, He startled the whole state when two of his sopho- mores won tive and lost no debates in the San Fran- cisco tourney. No small honor is due the valiant group of Cantwell speakers. The most consistent winners this year have been: Kevin Pawlik, Greg Pawlik, Bill Gonzales, Tim Ryan, Dan Lispi, and Mike Lozier. Others who have aided the club in its tourneys and have added key victories are: Vic'Gallardo, George Schwab, Pat Shan- non, Richard Dewberry, Gerald Lopez, and Dennis Johnson. A group of freshmen assure Cantwell of continued success in speech. They include: Ken Westbrook, Rich- ard Ochoa, Gerald Schmidt, and Marshall Mancilus. Several key men have led this team to its honors. President Bill Gonzales has led thte team through its most successful year. Greg and Kevin Pawlik have done special organizational work. Their hard work enabled the team to rise to its heights. 82 Brother Younghans congratulates Brother Tomkins and members of the Speech and Debate on a re- cent victory.
