He is impatient oi topcoats and hats preferring to be exposed, and he was young enough and tough enough to confront and enjoy the cold and the wind ot these tirnes-whether the winds of nature or the winds of political circumstance and national danger. He died oi exposure. but in a way he would have settled for-in line ot duty, and with his friends and enemies all around, supporting him and shoot- ing at him. It can be said oi him, as with few men in a like position. that he did not fear the weather and he did not trim his sails, but instead, challenged the wind itself, to improve its direction and to cause it to blow more softly and more kindly over the world and its people . . . Figures of speech cannot completely indicate nor can superla- tives do ljustice to the expression of our feelings of gratitude and love for someone like Father O'Dowd. Probably this good Priest did not realize the part he has played in the lives ot all of us associated with CANTWELL . . . and the influence tor good that he was and shall continue to be as long as this school he loved stands in the shadows of the tower ot his beloved St. Alphonsus Church. Words fail us because we see in Father O'Dowd the mystery of God's love for us. He was a link in the chain which binds us to our Creator. He was an angel of peace who constantly reminded us-by his generosity, his dedication, his interest, his love -that God is with us. We console ourselves by thinking with Cardinal Newman: God does nothing in 'vain- H e knows what He is about. He may take way my friendsg He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, Make my spirits sink, Hide my future from me-still God knows what He is about! Oh, yes4thank God-He knew what He was about! REVEREND FATHER PATRICK I. O'DOWD Benefactor and Friend of Cantwell Born in Ireland, March 5th, 1901 Ordained Iune 21st, 1925 Died May 3rd, 1963 CANTWELL IS PEOPLE IN A COMPLEX OF ACTIVITY. People in the excitement of a Friday night basketball game at the Sports Arena. The spectacle of color and sound in motion as the happy Homecoming Queen and her solemn escort perform their royal duties. A frosh enjoy- ing the cool refreshment of his snow cone. Tenors practicing for the all important Talent Show. Busy students hurrying home or to work or for the after school meeting with the girl friend. These are the Ordinary People engaging in the Ordinary Activities at CANTWELL. 21' Q' L - :Jw ?fs?'i mf.- , .. ff.. .1 We are Religious People too, on our knees at the annual Guadalupe Proces- sion. Normal People making use of the M.T.A. in going home from school, and in returing to perform at the Brothers' Christmas Party. Active People gain- ing an education in the difficult job of simply living together. These are a few more phases of our CANTWELL life. 3 ,r 'o -. . 'T - ... f, ev-nest -4.v..' Noviees to Higher Fields of Learning. Upon the threshold of a new realm of studies and environ- ment, this group, somewhat new to these hallowed halls, embarks upon the challenge of four years of preparatory studies with hopes of attaining new goals and the suc- cessful matriculation of their assigned subjects. One of the foremost achievements of each member, when their year draws to a close, will be that of a complete renais- sance of their ideas and perspective on the years to come and that which has just passed. New Frosh leam Benediction Hymns prior to of the three annual days of recollection. . lg 9 ' ss Of this group it can be said that they possess a genuine enthusiasm and an ardent desire to become part of the makeup and general- welfare of the school. This is well exemplified by their encouraging support and attendance at the various games of the school throughout the dif- ferent seasons. A walk down to the football field, a jaunt down to track practice or a look in the gym after school will reveal to the observer a vast array of tal- ented young novices representing a huge contingent of this year. Beyond the field of sports their interests are displayed in an even deeper earnest as they root them- selves in such arduous endeavors as the school news- paper, the chess and debate clubs, and the yearbook staff itself. Neither does their scope end here, for men- tion a drive for some charitable or religious purpose, and a look at the contributions will often evidence their leading of the school in this respect. Though high school may be relatively a new proposition to them, one can easily note their adeptness in rapidly adjusting to the problems, business, and environment of CANTWELL. It is in this year that they have laid the foundation of their scholastic ability by which others will judge them in the future. Knowing this, the freshman readily assumed a new-found responsibility which is an asset in his Christian training here at CANTWELL. Having the characteristic essentials of a good beginning, the freshman year promises to be in its future years the embodiment of a good Catholic education. ,Q -Qlziflit. Q 153251, One .7-1 as . For eight full years before their entrance to high school, they build and retain a certain dependence on the instructor, and, because they are never made to act individually, fall in as a part of a group that is having its education pumped into them by another. The class rather than the student, acts. High school, then, is something of a shock, and one that is generally unexpected. There have been warnings, but they are swallowed by the flood of enthusiasm for something new and different. And so the freshman, suddenly stripped of his protecting class, must stand up and act. This fact tends to make the first year of high school something of a period of transition from the unit to the individual. It is ct weaning from the suckling education of primary school, and one that takes a full year, The sophomore, therefore is the first appearance of a true high school individual. He has learned his lessons by experience, and has had the benefit of a summer to consolidate his learnings, and to decide in what way to use them. He looks at freshmen with a jaundiced eye, for he has withstood the ordeal. The others must prove themselves. But then again, sophomore year is as much a transitory period as first year. When he is admitted to the standing of sophomore, the former freshman is self satisfied. He has learned a vast amount in a single year and most of this has been practical knowledge, not restricted to classroom recitation. The knowledge, however, is in crude form, and must be refined to be of any use. His knowledge is too rich for the gears of society. It is therefore the additional function of the second year teacher to mold this man. He is still plastic, his material is strong: and the mold is not yet broken. If he is to be a man in the full sense of the word, it is now that he will be fashioned. This, then, is the sophomore. He is the rough casting of a man. The rough edges must be smoothed, the figure made strong, the form burnished to brilliancy. Then, as his second year ends, and only then, is he a man. Paths to Greater school work are rewarded by the Brother Principal Yak hard on mother Dan Sanchez swallows surprise luncheon package. 'sal Q ? 1 JE. - ' ' g Tom Barbosa makes his move for two points in Varsity play against Salesian. Football Cheerleaders Tom Botana and Ioe Rizzi rouse support for team at St Paul's game. As in the past when there is a gradu- ating class, there is alwaysaready supply ot underclassmen to replace them. Com- posed ot the best elements of the school they have proved by successfully com- pleting three years at Cantwell that they are able representatives of their school. They will come back in September to wind up their high school education as seniors, the upper classmen of Cantwell, a thing they have waited three fulll years to do. As seniors it will be their job, their duty to represent Cantwell. This year's Iuniors, through their enthu- siastic participation in the various activi- ties in the school have shown that they possess the abilities necessary to take over the positions vacated by the sen- iors. They have been active in the Band and Glee Club, Sodality and Apostle- ship of Prayer, Varsity Football, Basket- ball, and Baseball, as well as Track, the Dance Committee, G.P.G., the Cardinal, and the VERITAS. Tom Matush on way down aft- er practice lay-up at Sports Arena. Richard Bruich, Basketball Cheerleader puts up school banner. Not only were they necessary members of these extracur- ricular activities but they' contributed heavily to the school's honor roll. All in all this was a junior year which showed itself to be a credit to Cantwell and to the teachers who tutored them. At this point there is little left to say except to wish the Iunior Class success in their year as Seniors. 57 Pat Davy has some nose trouble, Ca1'ter's will fix it Samuel Allevato Promoter Apostleship of Prayer, Gamma Pi Gamma. 5-1, t in I ww, ,,2 loseph Alvarez Track f t?1 415 Anthony Anton it 1: V V, Track. pic Frank Arbizu Drama, Gamma Pi Gamma, Sodality, Manager Varsity Football, S.S.A. reporter for Varsity Baseball. End Reno Frigo can't quite hold on to this one as a Salesian Mustang interferes. 100 The Cardinal season opened with an experienced backfield, but with few returning linemen. Though hampered by this and key injuries during practice sessions, the team, with head coach Greg Kabat and assistants Iim Takeuchi and Don Vena, entered their first game against Bishop Amat. The game was characteristic of the season to come. Facing unfavorable odds, Cantwell played the entire game with an effort complimentary to the tradition established in better years. The next two games followed in the same disappoint- ing order: Cathedral and Azusa. In the fourth game of the season with Mission, the Cardinals bounced back winning 19 to 13. This Was due mainly to the outstanding efforts of Quar- terback Mike Cadilli and End Reno Frigo, who clicked on a sixty yard scoring play in final minutes of the fourth quarter. The league season faired even Worse: no Wins and four loses. More than anything Cantwell was hampered by the unusual strength of its Angeles League Competitors Cat one time or another during the season Mater Dei, Servite and St. Paul's held berths on the C.1.F. top ten teamsl. Nonetheless Cantwell's '63 season was marked with fine indi- vidual efforts-the pasisng of Mike Cadilli, the pass receiving of Flanker Ralph Sacco, the rushing of lim Hauser and Dan Ramirez, and the exemplification of an all-out team spirit, as well as outstanding performances both offensively and defen- sively, in every game, of team co-captains Frank Arciero and Reno Frigo. It is hoped that in the coming season the individual efforts will be joined to outstanding team effort and thus put Cant- well back where it belongs at the head of the Angeles League or any league standing. cg U H , fx ZW 4 -I' X 5 U xi I I f -. Led by Sophomores: center Albert Arciero and Quarter- back Bob Gritt Cco-captainsl, and joined with the decep- tive running of Halfback Richard Castro, and the crush- ing blocking oi Vince Ochoa, the team did not record an impressive Win-loss record, but each team memb'er played to the best of his ability Without ever letting down. How- ever, this was not a team of individuals but ratherna team in the real sense: one Which met the challenge of each game with an aggressive spirit not common to a losing season. However, by the close of the sea- son their record was equal to the sum of the other two Cantwell football teams. They placed third in League standings, behind Mater Dei and Servite. The seasons opener saw the Freshmen struggle in lUl degree temperature against St. Paul's. They dropped the next two games also, due perhaps to inexperience and the shortpractice ses- sions necessitated by the extreme heat. Cnce the temperature cooled off a bit the practice sessions became rougher, and a fired up CEE team met and defeated their next competitor: Mission. After their first taste of victory they were determined not to stop the winning streak. With coach Brother Eccleston they traveled to St. Paul's and crushed the Swordsmen on their home field. F. Eccleston, displayed an effective balance of offensive scoring ability, defensive aggressiveness, and a strong Winning spirit which proved necessary through- out the entire season. On offense, Captain Gerald Lopez and guards Richard Valdez and Earl Hamby led the team in scoring with 211, 154, and 104 points respectively. These three men Were adequately balanced by forwards Robert Romero, Robert Davy, Iohn Carlow, and Bob Griff. Other members of the team who gave vitally needed assistance were Eugene Rearnes, Mitch Loza, Ernest Barbosa, Michael Molina, Mark Paulin, and David Guerra. On defense a Well executed full court press proved de- cisive in securing victory all through the season. The 1963-1964 B team always possessed that type of spirit fitting a well developed team, and finished the season with the honor of being Angelus League B Champions. 5 . t r t 1 4 Mark Paulin scores a lay-up putting the B's out Earl Hamby B guard leads the fast break against Bosco in from of Cqthedrql. With ten returning lettermen from a 1963 C.I.F. Semi Finalist and Angelus League Championship Team the outlook for the season was more than promising. Pre-league games showed that the Cards would definitely be C.I.F. contenders again in '64, The big guns of the offense were: Iim Hauser, Ralph Sacco, Frank Arciero, and Pat O'Brieng and the stal- wart defense was led by team Captain Mike Cadilli, Dan Ramirez, Mike Cosentino, and Ioe Rizzi. Pitch- ing, the backbone of any baseball team, was han- dled by Angelus League Most Valuable Player '64, Frank Klinger, Tom Matush, and Rick Chval. As the league began Cantwell opened with St. Paul and defeated the Swordsmen 16-3, as close as the runner-up in the league was to come to the Cards. The stage set, the Varsity went on to Win the league with a record of 8 wins, U losses Ca repeat ot the l963 Charnpionshipl. In the sixth inning, with the finals almost secured the Var- sity allowed Buena iive runsp the seventh came and went quickly seeing no change on the score board. Even in defeat, outsiders could not help being impressed by this great team and their sportsman- ship. The '64 Cantwell LV. Baseball Team under the capable coaching of Brother I.P. Reynia, demonstrated that they were the finest by winning six of their eight league competitions, and thus, merited the distinction ot being hailed Angelus League Champs. The Champions combined timely base hitting, clutch pitching, and tight defensive play to bring the title to Cantwell. Pitchers Tom Schell and Mike Sullivan both finished with impressive 3-l records in league compe- tition. Their battery mate, Don Rizzi, always did a good job behind and at the plate. First baseman Iohn Renia, co-captain Earl Hamby-second base, co-cap- tain Bob Gritf-short-stop, and Ed Valenzuela-third base, combined to make an infield which was tough to hit through. Outtielders: Marno Tavarez and Mike Arnold joined with either Mike Guigno or Dan Bruich to make a fast and alert three some. Essential assist- ance was given by catchers: Tony Caruso, Ioe Renia, and Rick Smithg outfielders: Tom Nolan and Mike Schaatg infielder Sean Haley, and relief pitcher Dave Aldaco. With Bro. Treacy as mod- erator, the varsity rolled over St. Paul's, Pius X, and Mission with overwehlming scores. Their only two defeats-by slim margins- came at the hands of Servite. The varsity's final record was an impressive 4 wins, 2 losses in league playg undefeated in 3 practice matches. A second place in the league puts them in the CLF. playoffs in Santa Barbara. Two fine prospects for future years are freshmen: Steve Schmidt and Iohn Uhl who played varsity golf all year. The I.V. team led by Bros. Eccleston and Keogh beat Servite twice and lost to them once. Although the I.V.'s had only a few matches this year, they used the season well by regular practice sessions at the Montebello Golf Course. Rapidly progressing as a popular sport at Cantwell, golf is expected to be responsible for many championsip teams in the very near future. - wwf-1 r V-: r-0 fl--f - K .-fr.. They support the sports program by their spirited attend- ance at games and by obtaining various training aids, ath- letic aids, athletic equipment, uniforms, and anything that will aid and promote athletics at Cantwell. The largest fund raiser each year is the selling of Fourth of Iuly fireworks from a very busy stand on the Cantwell gymnasium parking lot, This revenue is supplemented by a tremendously popular pancake breakfast and much enjoyed cocktail parties. As a result of these activities Cantwell's teams are now outfitted in the finest of uniforms, and, Cantwell's coaches have at their disposal long needed equipment Cur- rently, the club is considering a wrestling mat, track warm- ups, and glass basketball backboards. Though only three years old, major additions to Cantwell's sports program by the Booster's Club include: a full set of steel adjustable track hurdles, pole vault standards, track uniforms, college-style football jerseys, sideline capes, a seven- man charging sled, basketball uniforms, basketball warm-ups, material for conditioning the baseball infield, and baseball uniforms. Beside their impressive number of achievements, it must also be noted that everything the dynamic Alumni and Booster Club makes, buys, or sponsors for Cantwell is genuine first-class. Cantwelfs Homecoming This year the Cardinal Varsity Football squad showed great discretion in selecting their Homecoming Queen and her Royal Princesses. Reigning over the festivities of the evening were Queen Mary Anne Billings and Princesses: Wilma Lobato, Kris Kinglesmith, Yolanda Perea, and Sonia McGaughey. Their majesties were escorted by five representatives of senior year: Tony Terich, Frank Servin, Mike Rocklein, Frank Klinger, and Alan Thomas. The court led the ceremonies at half-time making a grand entrance by motor cavalcade and took their place in a spe- cially prepared viewing area in the home stands. From the game the court moved to a transformed cafeteria, now an Oriental garden throne room, and there presided over the Homecoming Dance. Following the procession to the throne, the co-captains: Reno Frigo and Frank Arciero placed a jewel studded tiara on Mary Anne, and her Homecoming Queenship became otlicial. The Art of Persuasion A few of the many award winners of this year's Speech and Debate Club are: tl-rl Ronald Bates, Tim Ryan, Pat Shannon, Dan Lispi, Ray Slavin, and Kevin Pawlik. Organized only this year by Reverend Brother Tomkins, the Cardinal Public Speaking Club has al- ready demonstrated to the school its admirable ability to win, and has served notice on its intention to place Cantwell in a position of unequalled excellence in the field of high school forensics. ln the five major tourna- ments and 2 minor events in which the team has part- ticipated, the Cantwellites amassed a total of some 9 trophies and gold medals, plus over 40 certificates of distinguished speaking. With its initial season com- pleted, the latest campus organization had ascended to 2nd place in the formidable Public School Midlands League, had wrested a hard-earned 3rd spot in the rugged Southern California Catholic Forensic League and the right to represent the Archdiocese at Denver, Colorado National Tournament, and finally, made plans for applying to the exclusive National Forensic League. Cantwell first entered league competition at the CRL Fall Opener, held at Bishop Montgomery High School in the last week of October. Here the Cards, led by Ierry Lopez, winner of the sole gold medal for Original Oratory, rolled up, besides the medal, six other awards for debate and impromptu. Four months later after long preparation, but short notice, a Cantwell team of two patchwork debating groups won four of six rounds to take the 3rd place position of the entire tournament of 37 schools at Pius X High School. Outstanding de- baters were Ed l-lamby and Greg Pawlik. From here the Cards traveled to Pasadena and the Iohn Muir High Open Tournament where 46 schools 4 from Ventura to San Diego were in competition. This proved to be Cantwell's most prominent victory as she swept two trophies in debate, lU awards in that same field, and 6 more in individual events. Totaling all this the Cards swept the Sweepstakes trophy and first place. Although doing excellent again at the MFL Spring opener, Cantwell succumbed only to powerful Mark Keppel by 2 points. The final test for the Club came at Loyola University where Kevin Pawlik won the 3rd place position in the Finals of Extempore and Ron Batesi and Greg Pawlik won positions in the Semi-final roun s. Within the club itself, the first election of officers took place in early October l963, placing Ed Hamby as President, Gerald Lopez, Vice President, Kevin Pawlik as Secretary and Greg Pawlik as Treasurer. A constitution was also prepared for the club by the Secretary, revised by the Reverend Brother Moderator, and unanimously accepted by the Club. This is one of the few documents of its type directing a Campus organization. lt was due to the Moderator, to the offi- cers, to the constitution, and especially to the mem- bers, that the club was such an overwhelming success. Strengthened by a new slate of capable officers, Bill Gonzales-President, Greg Pawlik-Vice President, Vic Gallardo-Secretary, and George Schwab-Treasurer, a veteran team of speakers, and the incoming Fresh- men, the club looks forward to its next and even bet- ter season when Cantwell will be only, FIRST, all Gerald Lopez smiles in appreciation of gold medal awarded for Original Oratory at Bish- op Montgomery High School in October. This stanza from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is doubly significant. It attests, firstly, to the ex- istence of chess at the early time in Which this book was written, and it shows the deep rela- tionship between lite and the game of chess- the royal game, the game royale. Paul Favero cautiously makes move against Brother Hunt Uounder and moderator oi both the Chess 'Club and the Library Leaguel. Glen Yamate, Bruce Capucetti, and Ioe McSWeyn Cl-rl, mem bers of the Chess Club, concentrate on game during their lunch period. The Chess Club, one of the most intellectual activities at Cantwell is enjoying its first year of existence and is flourishing much more than expected by its founder Brother Hunt. According to Brother, the Chess Club is ideal for average high school students who like to exercise their minds on a higher-than-usualplane. An ordinary game usually lasts for approxi- mately one hour. During this time, in days long gone by, fortunes, crowns, alliances, life itself was often won or lost at the chessboard. This game was invented for a Persian ruler who tired of the conventionalities of his sumptuous court had instructed a reward to be given to the sub- ject who produced the best game. Could there have been any combination? There is a literal infinity of possible moves. Books are our Business This year the Library League, under Brother Hunt's capable direction, has endeavored to awaken the reading interests of the student body. The League has done this by introducing many new books in an attempt to satisfy the reading tastes of all. In addition by subscribing to various periodical magazines, it has attempted to keep the students informed of what is happening in the world at the present time. The members of the League are kept busy maintaining the books in good condition, and by classifying and pre- paring new books for the student's use. lohn Diaz tstandingl and David Harrigan check card catalogue as part of their regular 169 duties with the Library League. The second took place in Spring and likewise manifested the hard ork put forth by director and members during the year. Besides these rmal concerts, the band lent color and spirit to the basketball season by laying at the home games. Scherer Kleftl and A. Their Voices The golden voices of the Cantwell Glee Club, once again, as in previous years, could be heard echoing through the halls of the school almost every day at fourth period. The Club has continually expanded, until this year it reached its apex of enrollment, numbering among its ranks ninety students. The members ranged from Freshmen to Seniors.
