PHILIP CF Patron of Car ,M e Seniors have completed twelve years oi education. We have strug- gled and learned, reioiced and remembered, crammed and retained, passed and advanced. perhaps even failed on occasion, but never abandoned the challenge. Unsustained we would long since have fallen bv the wayside. But, God has seen fit to bestow on us the guardianship and protection of loving parents who, realizing the value of Catholit. -' ation, have sacrificed their all that we might achieve this rr .stone in our pursuit of eternal happiness. lt is with deepest respect and devotion that this VERITAS 1958 is dedi- cated to them. May our Holy 'wf!'Vi'5l' keep them in His love, make them blessed upon earth, and bring them and us to everlasting bliss. They achieved first division honors in the league by defeating ur out of their seven league opponents, El Rancho High fl.as Vegasl suffered defeat at the hands of the Card eleven in the single pre-league tilt. ln the first game of the season the Cardinal eleven traveled out of state to meet the Rams of El Rancho High in Las Vegas, Nevada, The Cards went in as the underdogs but after a half time deficit of 20 to 12 in fav ir of the Rams, the Cardinal aerial attack pulled the rug from under the Rams edging them out 31 to 27, After an absence of two weeks from the gridiron because of the flu the Cards dropped their first league game to Serra's. Cavaliers by a score of 32 to 26. The following week seeking vengeance for their loss at home they downed the hard fighting Knights of Notre Dame High by 20 to 12 on the 1atter's field. The next week, playing once again on home ground the Card eleven were handed their second loss by Mt. Carmel 1-lighg the final score was 21 to 12. Again seeking vengeance for a loss at home the Cards edged out Loyola 21 to 19 thus ruining the Cubs homecoming festivities. The next Friday was. home- coming for the Cards. Cantwell romped over Pius X C32 to 121 in an easy going tilt. How- ever, the following week was a completely different story when the Red and Gold suf- fered a 32 to 7 lashing from the ever ready St. Anthony's team. ln the final game of the season the Cards dumped the Cathedral Phantoms 20 to 7. This gave the Cards first divi- sion honors and two Cards fEddie Gomez, wingback and Don Vena, endl were named to the second team of :tm All Ciztlurfliw self-ft1.:f: 15.1-1957, -V... Our Varsity was under the direction of Coach Bob Watson, to whom we regret to bid farewell because of his great accomplishments in his brief stay of only two years as basketball coach, He coached the Cards five to G string of unforgettable victories. The Cards warmed up for the Catholic League campaign by copping the Summer League Championship with an undefeated record of l2 wins and no losses. Next, our Casabamen marched into the Mount Carmel Tournament and for the firs.t time in the history of the two schools the Cards defeated the favored Mt. Carmel team 4l to 38. This win gave the cards the championship and the much coveted Cardinal Mclntyre Trophy But, this was not all, Cantwell placed two first stringers Clerry Grote and Neil Edwards? on the All-Tournament Team and Neil Edwards took top honors as he was chosen the 'iMos.t Outstanding Player of the Tournamentf' lc Y, W 2 X kr? 2 S, 2, if 4 'igaobby AhNee Steve Kubas I ,Ed Chavira r Don Vena 5 I lerry Grote i Neil Edwards Mike lzuno, M KC ,f 55 Our e o e Valley in the final round of the Fourth Annual Santa Maria Invitational Tournament, wiTh a score of 62 to 41, in Northern California, Again the same two first stringers llerry Grote and Neil Edwardsl were named to the All-tournament team. ln league play the Cards ended with a final mark of ll wins and 3 losses to place second in Catholic League standings. The only losses riffered by the Cards were at the hands of champion Mt, Carmel High twice and Cathedral l-ligh once For the first time in Cantwell's basketball history the Card Five was placed in the Cllr. Tourney but lost the first game to a determined Mira Costa team, When the selections for the Catholic League Top ten courtmen and the the All-CIF top ten courtmen came up, Cant- well was not forgotten. Again it was Neil Edwards and ferry Grote on the All-Catholic Ten, but Neil Edwards was alone when it came to the All-Cll' first string selections, We regret to say good-bye to our great coach, lvfr Bob Watson and to most of our players who are seniors this year and will not return to bring more honors to their school next championship trophy came when our varsity hoopsters defeated Ant l ' f ,iff y ', fs.-1 1, ii?
