How can a few biographical fact evoke the memory of a person you’ll probably always remember? Lois Breckenridge started working at Canton in 1953. Mr. Howlett fondly described her as a dependable person, who didn't receive many fancy awards, because all she did was her job day after day for 30 years. But what a job! Brecky managed to keej on top of everyone. Some kids were always trying to cut corners — to see if they could outwit her just once. According to Mi Howlett, If you were to walk up Main Street, grab somebody from Canton, and shout, 'Quick, what’s the first thing yov remember about high school?’ Nine out of ten people would say Brecky and talk your ear off for an hour.” i I 18 M SCHOOL BOARD Row 1: Donald Potter, Pres., Kathleen Crowe, Charlotte Remsay, V.P. Some of the highlights of the year were the 6-5 extra innings win over Massena, which was not only Canton’s 1st win of the season but, was also the first time the J.V. Bears had beat Massena in many years. Another highlight of the season was a 7-4 victory over O.F.A., who at that time was in first place. This year’s Bears were co-coached by Lyle Newman and Paul Thompson and led by tri-captains, Mike Wentworth, Dave Kennedy and Pat Manning. The team was led in hitting by Mike Wengtwotth, .500, followed by sophomores John Barr, .485 (team leader in assists), Pat Man- ning, .391 (with 3 game winning hits) and Dave Kennedy, .368 (team leader in RBI’s with 15). The horseshoe was first put to work against Potsdam and the team re- turned triumphant from then on. The team was led on the field by MVP’s Patricia Abt and Whitney Bristol and the mound wizard, Mary Prioio, who won 6 games, lost 2 and received 1 save. Why didn’t someone tell me we were supposed to wear white shirts?” The Golf team, coached by Mr. Jones, lost a lot of close matches this year. The JV’s were led by co-captains, Andy Brockway and Bobby Toomey, the team’s leading rusher with 652 yards in 8 games for an average of 81.5 yards per game. Other key players were: freshman running back Bill Matanis who gained 200 yards on the ground as well as mak- ing several spectacular catches. Coach Audet credits Paul Coffey and Andy Brockway for their fine defensive play and Bobby Toomey and Bill Matanis on offense. Coach Audet says with a relatively young team — 16 sophomores and 15 freshmen, he was very pleased with every single player on the team and very pleased with the attitude and sportsmanship with which they played. He also hopes to have a good crop of freshmen coming up to help his sophomores next year and change this year’s record around. 56 Ashes, ashes, we all fall down! VARSITY FOOTBALL Row 1: C. Axtell, E. Winning five of the last six league games, they brought their league record to 8-8, and ended their season at the Section 10 Class B finals with a 46-37 loss to a tough Gouverneur team. Four seniors gave the team its experience and direction. The girls were led in scoring by All- Northern players, Linda Peters and Patty Abt. Linda, a 3-year starter and team captain, aver- aged 15 points per game, while Patty hit an average of 13 points. Another 3-year veteran, Karen Butler, lead the team in foul shooting ac- curacy with a 12% rate. The fourth senior, Julie Bokat, aided the team with some timely baskets and good corner shooting. Everyone made solid contributions to the team. The team faced their adversities with undaunted enthusiasm and the proper attitude toward the game. Next year’s team will represent Canton with the same outstanding character and pride that was exhibited this year. VARSITY BASKETBALL Row 1; E. Jones, Coach Jones, L. Peters, K. Butler, S. Guillermo Sol from Spain, feels that our students and teachers are helpful and understanding. The classes are confusing to him, and the school day is shorter here and they don’t have study halls or detention in Spain. In Guillo’s school they take 11 subjects in a year, have a two hour lunch and much more studying to do. We will miss Guillo when he leaves. I’ll come back someday to visit soon. See ya later.” The other exchange student this year is Miwa Sugama from Japan. Miwa finds CHS much different than her school. The school days are shorter at Canton and at Miwa’s school students don’t have a choice of subjects. Miwa enjoyed par- ticipating in sports this year. Also, she said the teachers here are more active and friendlier than at her home school. We will also miss Miwa when she goes home to Japan. I am very happy being able to come here and I want to thank the people who made friends with me and helped me.” 88 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Row 1: Nicole Thew, Debbie Garner, Cathy Whalen, Debbie Jensen, Kelley Abbott, Dawn Stout.
