3 «I ; ■ SSpsB S:. Ml The day will come. What you see is what you get! The years will pass, albeit slowly. You WILL leave. The knowledge you gain now will stand you in good stead; do not scorn Audet or Jones, what they know, they give. Just a couple of answers . . . You’ll never guess what we've been doing! Look Mom, I'm on Candid Camera! Hey Babeee! How's 'bout my place?!” Enjoy yourself at dances, parties, proms. All too soon the opportunity will disappear. It’s good to forget. 7 • • iMa Tallness doesn’t breed enthusiasm. Who says love and war don’t mix? School is serious business. ■ Excitement at CHS. At last I'm outta jail.' Stop a moment. Reflect on what you've learned; despite all the disparagements, school endures. Take advantage of it. The day will come. Another blue Monday . . . We came to you frightened and unsure You became our friends and guides Showing us not only the things in life The whole that they make up. Being our comfort and support When our balloons fluttered to ground, popped. And adding your cheers to ours When our achievements and goals became one. Sharing with us not only your views But how our own can develop. Revealing to us the visions you’ve had So we can create our own. 12 FACULTY DEDICATION We appreciate your new determination to make our school glow with self-pride. Your active support of school arts and activities, your fair enforcement of long standing rules, and your revival of school spirit all contribute to our belief that you will be a guiding force in Canton for years to come. We hope to learn from you, each in his own way. As your first year draws to a close, we say, Congratulations and welcome!” Samuel Shevat, Principal 14 SCHOOL BOARD Row 1: C. Ramsay, R. Sibbitts, P. We’ve come to a new turn in a ride we’d thought we’d mastered. Although these new surroundings and experiences are frightening, we know that eventually we will master these too. The hardest part will be getting to that point, But we never thought we’d get this far. We’re grown up now, and see life more clearly. Our eyes have learned new ways to see and they’ve discovered many things One being we have much more to discover. But we have time, and we have the excitement necessary to see us through the next three years and beyond. 26 27 FRESHMEN CLASS OFFICERS Row 1: K. Stacy, Secretary Row 2: A. Northrup, President; K. It does not really matter if the team is lost in the bogs or found. They play their sports for fun. That’s why they exist, right? Still, it’s hard to remember the sun at 5:30 practice, when early morning fogs obscure the light. Next year, next year. Graduate to a starter on the varsity team. This was good for a second place finish in their division and in- cluded wins over Potsdam, OFA, Saranac, Madrid- Waddington, and Gouveneur. The Bears were led in hitting by Randy Frank (.548), Greg Coir, Mike Hills, and Pat Downing. Chad Dafoe, Mike Hills, and John Bradt handled the pitching duties. Wayne Willette coached hisJV Soccer team through another impressive year, finishing the season with a 13-0-1 record, and bringing their winning streak up to 34 games in a row. Coach Willette felt that it was an impressive season, not only statistically, but also as far as the kids were concerned. He also felt that everyone contributed their utmost, more than any other year. Willette has reason to believe that when peo- ple think of soccer, they will think of Canton. The JV Softball team, coached by Mr. Smilgin, enjoyed a good year. They were the JV league co-champions with a 7-3 record. Gretchen Wells led the young team which had only one starting sophomore. Mary Priolo and Toni Todd han- dled the pitching duties. Michele Evans led the team in RBFs and most timely hits. Cindy Rabbit” Rabideau, short stop, led the team’s excellent defense. This year's highlights were two wins over OFA. The JV Girls Soccer team had a fine 8-3-1 year under their new coach Renee Vogt. Although no one player stood out, the team as a whole pulled together.” The defense, led by Michele Evans and Vicki O’Neill, was the highlight of the year. Despite the games being played during the supper hour, the team received excellent support, especially from parents. The JV Football team, coached by Mr. Audet with help from Chip Tarbell, enjoyed one of the best seasons in a long time. The Jr. Bears ended up in second place in Div. II of the N.A.C. with a 3-4-1 record. The season was highlighted by a Junior Bears opening victory against OFA 20-12 as well as many individual achievements. Freshman Andy Brockway led the team in ground gainage. He carried the ball 13 times, gained 517 yards, and scored six touchdowns. Bill Matonis, another freshman, carried the ball 28 times for 105 yard gainage. Bill Toomey, a freshman, was the team’s leading receiver with three touchdown catches. On defense, Steve Sweet and Bob Buell led the way with 50 and 48 tackles, respectively. 58 WRAP-UP The Junior Bears finished with an 8-8 record. Captain Andy Bisselle was not only the leader of the team but he also led in scoring. Other starters were sophomore Mike Wentworth, freshman Gor- don Leonard, and Mark Saltrelli and Peter Simpson, also freshmen. Mr. Dusharm is very optimistic about next year with 11 of his players returning. The JV Wrestling team finished with an 8-3 record, their best ever. The Massena tournament, at which the Jr. Bears took second place, was a highlight of the season. Jim Smith and Pat Butler were first place finishers at the tournament. Throughout the season competi- tion existed for the various weight groups because of the abun- dance of talent of the team. Coach Charles Tarbell feels that next year will prove to be a promising season. The JV Girl’s Basketball team, coached by Renee Vogt, was 4-3 in midseason, third in the league. Mary Priolo, offensively and Ann Marie Furgal, defensively, along with the broadly talented Toni Todd and Michele Evans, were the mainstays of the team. As a matter of fact, they have led the team to within nine points of a 7-0 record, except for Fortuna intervention. Still, large crowds support the team. The JV Hockey team, despite their record of 2-8, still enjoyed the season. The captains this year were sophomores Sean Ab- bott and Hal Crimmel. Several of their games were lost by only one point. Coach Elberty is looking forward to a better next year with the gain of several talented eighth graders. The JV Volleyball team, coached by Martha Maine, had a disappointing year. They ended the season with only one win and nine losses. Ms. Maine still remains hopeful that next year will show improvement. 59 If you’re not an athlete, And still like to be involved CHS has an activity for you. Intrepidly led by Mrs. Monroe and Ms. Marian Frear, all the staff learned the skills of writing, editing, and producing a newspaper. Their efforts were not wasted, however, for the Wash’s issues were avidly awaited and fervently read by the student population. Row 1:J. Rossie, D. Papaw, M. Frear, S. Denney. Row 2: S. This year the festival was held in Novembei | at Potsdam State’s Crane School of Music. We are very proud of our young musicians. The Canton High School Orchestra in its streamlined version, consists of all stringed instruments. Violins, violas, basses, and cellos, create a melodious sound unlike any other of the musical groups. Led by Mrs. Kear, the orchestra performs for the school musicals, as well as other concerts. They have participated in local parades, the Ottawa Music Festival, NYSSMA Band Competition and NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festivals. The Stage Band has developed into a first class organization this year. They played at he St. Lawrence County Jazz Festival and many other places. They also combined with he Vocal Showcase for some exciting sounds. Congratulations on a fine year. One of the highest honors a high school music student can obtain is to be selected as a member of the Conference All State Band. Students are selected on the basis of a very competitive audition in the spring. Wendy Rood is one of the first band students in recent years to receive this honor. She attended the Conference in early December at the Concord Hotel and played for the Governor of the State in Albany. Congratulations to a very talented clarinetist. The new machine was perhaps one of the reasons why advisor Mrs. Martin decided to institute a trainee system, whereby a student watches for a week before (s)he talks. The club had more members this year that in previous years and hopefully it will continue to grow. Row 1: M. Wilkinson, D. Newman, S. Majer, N. Leet, S. Morter, J. Stradling. Row 2: W. Bristol, C. Canton had four semi-finalists in the NMSQT PSAT test this year, more than any North Country school in recent memory. Unfortunately, Pat Dudley moved on to the greener pastures of prep school, leaving Hank Gibson, Paul Hessert, and Marian Frear to man our academic barricades with which they should have no trouble. Our students have achieved an impressive accomplishment. We should be proud. The Canton Whiz Quiz team — that’a the people you see smiling out of the box at you — had one returning member, Captain, an honorary title only, Hank Gibson. Trenchantly led once again by Mrs. Audet, who puts the students through two grueling practice sessions a week, Canton will try to triumph this year. 67 THESPIANS Students all over the world are granted membership in the Thespian Society in their schools for work done in Theater Arts. Inductions are held yearly at Hugh C. Williams High School to initiate students into the school’s local Thespian Troupe 259. The Thespians sponsor the annual theatrical productions at the high school. Incuded this year were a musical, a one- act play, a group of three one-act plays and a final spring production. Row 1:J. GYMNASTICS K. Sullivan, L. Wells R. Locy Premiering in the middle of May, students from third to twelfth grade will be showing off their gymnastic talent. Gymnastics mainly involves floor exercises, the vault, the uneven bars, and the balance beam. Each tests to the utmost the athlete’s ability to control her movements in empty space. 71 HORSE SENSE CLUB The Horse Sense Club is headed by Presi- dent Lori Morrison and advisor Mr. Grant. This group, which has started its second year, is still forming and searching for new ideas. The club enjoys activities such as trail riding at Stable Acres, and visiting horse farms, and horse shows. Row 1: M. Patraw, C. Danehy, C. Donnelly, K. Shields. Row 2: D. Papaw, M. Beauvais, J. The staff of Beyond, the creative arts magazine, was larger this year than ever before, as awareness and interest continued to spread throughout the school. Mainly led by senior Laura Warnock with consultatory help from Mrs. Martin, the staff was also better organized, allowing them to sign up more patrons, gather more materials, and hopefully sell more magazines. All in all this was the magazine’s best year in its three-year history, and it should grow in the future. 72 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is one of the most prestigious groups in the school. Throughout the year, the N.H.S. sponsors breakfasts, dinners, and other fund-raising activities to make money for the year-end scholar- ship awards. In addition, Higher Education Night saw N.H.S. members acting as guides, waiters, and con- struction workers. Row 1: D.VanBlair, C. Smith, P. Robinson, D. Merrill, S. Hedger. Row 2: R. Firman, G. ORIENTATION CLUB The Orientation Club functions as a welcoming committee for new students. During the school year members meet new students, give them a tour of the building and help them to get acquainted with our school. The club members also offer a tutoring service and are available to help anyone having difficulty with a subject. In the spring, they serve as guides in a special program for eighth graders and their parents. Row 1: D. VanBlair, P. Smilgin, M. Smith. Row 2: L. Bennett, D. Merrill, J. Freeland, L. Morrison, C. The contestants this year were Kermit, Cookie Monster, Big Bird, and the Fire Engine. Big Bird led the Juniors to first place with 74 points, Cookie Monster and his Sophomores were scared into second with 56 points, the Senior’s Red Fire Engine burned out in third with 54 points, and Kermit left the Freshmen hopping mad in fourth with 41 points. NAIADES Naiades could be described as dance in water. It has synchronization of the performers to each other and to music. The theme for this year’s program was SEA FESTIVAL. The routines were performed with skits in between. One of the biggest projects in putting on this show is the mural which is 75 feet by 15 feet. The mural is started in February so it will be done in time for the show. Row 1: C. Mouthorp, R. Santamoor, K. Connor, D. Noble. Row 2: J. Sayer, J. Wing, K. White, K. White, B. Palmet, M. Despite this somewhat average team record, however, Pat Dudley finished an excellent sixth out of 136 golfers at the state tournament, as well as making the All-Northern team. Although he, Dick Christy, and Warren Conant have all gone the rest of the team is still here, and Mrs. Jones hopes for a more fruitful next season. In his last season, Ted Moore coached the Varsity Baseball team to an 8-7 record. Shortstop Steve VonSchiller and pitcher Brian Norton led the team, making first and second team All- Northern, respectively. Sophomore Bill Besio, the right-fielder, also did an outstanding job. With all these stars, it is not surpris- ing that the attendance was better than usual. Varsity Soccer, under the direction of Roger Dusharm, finished 9-3-3 in the 1981 season; a rebuilding year. Next season Coach Dusharm is hopeful that the incoming juniors and seniors will provide a stronger team. Still, despite being beaten in the first round of the sectionals by Knox-Memorial, this year was not poor by any standards. Nine players were named to All-Star teams: Paul Newman, Marty Collins, and Jeff Olvert to the first team, Bill Stone, John Post, Ray McKenna, and Larry Felt to the second team, and Steve Hunt and Andy Mager received Honorable Mentions. The Girl’s 1981 track team was led by head coach Ms. Maroney and assistant coach Mrs. Caracciolo. The girls ended the season with a 4-5 record. Sue Goolden, Nancy Leet, and Bali Davis were awarded Most Valuable Field, Most Valuable Runner and Most Improved respectively. Coach’s awards were given to Katherine VandeWater and Nancy Moussaw. Despite the loss of VandeWater and Moussaw the 1982 team should be quite strong with the younger members ready and willing to contribute. Coach Willette’s Varsity Softball team had a good rebuilding year in ’81. Their record at the end of the year was 6 wins and 8 losses. During the season great individual improvements were made. Mr. Willette feels his ladies will be ready in ’82 to be a very competitive team. He also expects Whoopsy” totals will go down. The Varsity Girls’ Soccer team did not have the successful year they had hoped for. They finished the season with a 1-10-1 record. Coach Martha Maine is hopeful however, that next year’s team will be an improvement. Four girls were picked to the All-Northern teams. Linda Peters and Anne-Marie Furgal were named to the first team and Sarah Kirby and Diane Durocher to the second team. Whitney Bristol, Sarah Kirby, and Denise Burcume were honored at the sports banquet for Best Defense, Best Offense, and Most Improved, respectively. The Swim team, led by Coach Mauri Maroney, finished with a 2-8 record. Coach Maroney felt it was a rebuilding year, with the size of the team almost doubling. They took in many young people who should be the foundation of a good future team, although two seniors will be lost. The team sent three people to the State meet: Patty Abt, Bali Davis, and Gretchen Wells. The same three were named first team All-Northerners. 94 WRAP-UP Under new coach Neal Riggs the Varsity Football team finished the season with a 2-6-1 record. Riggs instituted a pass-oriented offense which is more fun for both the players and spectators, not to mention the linemen, who receive a few less bruises. It also made Canton the 4 team out of nine offensively, and gave the Northern League records for passing and receptions to Jeff Proulx and John Matott, respectively. Mark Wolcott also broke the league reception record, and Russ Firman broke the Canton record for most tackles. The Boy’s Varsity Basketball team, coached by Mr. Hourihan, was led by co-captains John Matott and Paul Newman. This season John Matott became the fourth Canton Golden Bear in CHS history to achieve 1000 career points. Team member Barry Buckalew led the team in rebounds and inside scoring. Nick Walts, Jay Whitcomb, and Mark O’Brien were always ready to contribute their best. The team finished with an 11-10 record. The Varsity Wrestling team, coached by Neal Riggs, finished with a 10-2 record overall, winning their division. It had four undefeated wrestlers; Joe Conklin, Andy Johnson, Dan Ritz, and Dave Smith, who will hopefully lead Canton to triumph in tour- nament play. The Girls’ Cross-Country team finished the season ranked third in the section B divison with a 7-2 record. The boys finished fourth with a 3-2 record. Coach Kevin Maginn felt they were an outstanding team with lots of potential, but will need more seventh and eighth graders to have a strong future team.” Barb Stradling went to States as well as alternate Steve Gaffney. All Northern picks were Barb and Julie Stradling and Steve Gaff- ney; for second team Alice and Shirley teRiele and Woodie Longshore. As the yearbook goes to press, the Canton Varsity Girls’ Basket- ball team, coached by Mr. Jones, is in the midst of a dogfight for first place with Potsdam, Norwood, and Gouverneur. The team is led defensively by Patty Abt and Whitney Bristol while Linda Peters and Karen Butler contribute offensively along with leading scorers Denise Burcume and Sue Goolden. Goolden is approaching the 1,000 mark for the first time at Canton, stimulating good crowds in support of the team. The Varsity Hockey team, coached by Mr. Kingston and cap- tained by Russ Firman and Tom Phalon, had a disappointing 6- 12-1 season. Led by high scorers Jeff Proulx and Randy Frank, with Bill Stone, AJ Parker, Russ Firman, and Dave Shoulette on defense, they outshot a vast number of teams. Unfortunately, though they waited for the wins to come all season, the pucks just didn’t roll right.” Next year, however, looks optimistic. L 95 The Varsity Volley team, coached by Martha Maine, did not have the season they had hoped for. They ended the year with a regrettable 0-10 record. Ms. Maine, however, still has hopes for a better record next year. Wheels turn. Uncaring of ornaments or frills, They still turn.
