Bears hoopsters have had a frus- trating start this 79-’80 season with a midway record of 2-6. Captain Paul Newman has played well throughout the season scoring over 15 points in at least three straight games. Coach Dusharm hopes for a brighter second half of the season. 30 i m The J.V. Girls hoopsters are having a solid season this year. With a 3-3 record, the young team made up of six eighth graders, five freshmen and five sophomores, is displaying good skills and alot of hustle. F i: MODIFIED FOOTBALL The Modified Football team, consisting primarily of eighth and ninth graders, had a successful season this year. They finished the year with a 3-2 record, with two postponed games never being made up. According to Coaches Hourihan and Riggs, the highlight of the year was an outstanding showing against a supposedly superior Massena squad. Captains Ann LaPierre and Jenny Locy led the team but the short season seemed to injure team development. Coach Ms. Maine hopes for a wider turnout of girls next season. 33 J.V. HOCKEY Row 1: P. SOCCER Under the guidance of Coach Martha Maine and the Co-captains Lori Stratford and Maureen McKenna, the Girls’ J.V. Soccer squad finished the season with a record of 3-4-3. Peaking near the season’s end, the girls high- lighted the year with a 1 -0 victory over Saranac Lake who they had lost to in the first round 2-1. The year- book was put together with a lot of hard work so that the memories of a good year could be enjoyed by all. We hope you like it! 42 The Announcers’ Club this year consists of ten members ranging from grades nine through twelve. Under the guidance of Mrs. Renick, the Announcers’ Club tries to work with students on building style and vocal quality. The Senior Band has had a very active year. Besides their two annual concerts, groups from the band have entertained at many community affairs. They have participated in the Ottawa Music Festival and the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival and local parades. They have worked very hard this year and we think Canton has a band to be proud of. 44 STAGE BAND The Stage Band, under the direction of Mrs. Duda, had a satisfying year, on its own and combined with the Vocal Showcase. VOCAL SHOWCASE The .Vocal Showcase is a group started this year. The busy members rehearse every week to prepare vari- ous pop, rock and soul pieces. AREA ALL-STATE PARTICI- PANTS In order to be selected for the New York State Zone 5 Sectional All-State Band, Orches- tra or Chorus, students must audition or per- form a solo at the NYSSMA Spring Contest and be a member of their home organization. The Senior High Chorus met twice weekly for the whole year under the direction of Mr. Laraway. They participated in two major concerts and performed in smaller groups for entertainment. They performed a variety of music, ranging from spiritu- als, to folk songs, to Grease.” Not only did they sing a variety, but they sang them all well. Congratulations for a successful year of music. SENIOR HIGH CHORUS 48 HIGH SCHOOL CHAMBER STRINGS The Canton Chamber Strings is made up of the best string players in the high school. They meet regularly three times a week to rehearse many different kinds of music. The Chamber Strings play three to four concerts each year and are available to play in the community, such as at the Silas Wright Museum or for various civic groups. Many of its members participate in the New York State Music Association (NYSSMA) festivals and Area All-State Orchestra. The Chamber Strings have had a fun, prosperous year under the direction of Mrs. Kear, who has enriched the minds of each one of her “kids” with the Love of Music. Row 1: J. Webb, J. Leet, M. ORIENTA- TION CLUB The Orientation Club is one whose pur- pose is not very widely known throughout the student body. The purpose? Simply to help new students adjust to Canton High. These students could be eighth graders or transfers from other schools. With the help of Mrs. Cryderman this year’s orien- tation club was very successful in its pur- pose. 50 Front: S. Baker, J. The 1979-80 Niades Club is an excel- lent group with approximately 40 mem- bers. The name of this year’s show is “Title Waves” and it will be presented late in May. GYMNASTICS There was a large turnout of 150 tum- blers this year and 64 gymnasts were awarded positions. As of yet, there are no club captains but there are three senior members — Kathy Pierce, Betsy New- man, and Liz Ritz. The year was spent on many fund raising projects to prepare for a January coffeehouse and a three- act play in the spring. The 1979-1980 NHS has been involved with many school ori- ented activities. President Nancy Hollenbaugh and vice-president Jenn Coir have directed the group in sponsoring both the Financial Aid Night and the Higher Education Night. Mrs. Renick hopes for the continua- tion of these and many other activities. FFA Under the direction of Mr. Grant, the FFA has again held its annual citrus fruit sales comp- aign. The group also is involved in cattle and tractor judging. Some members of our FFA plan on attending the State FFA Con- vention in New York City. OLYMPICS The theme of the day was Flawaiian Punch, The setting was the gym, The juniors were a crazy Bunch, The young Limes hoped to win. With an overall half-year record of 8-3 the Varsity Bear Hoopsters show strong play-off potential. High- lighting the first half of the year the Bears clinched the championship title of the Ronald T. Burkman Tourna- ment at St. Lawrence University with wins over rival Norwood-Norfolk and a then undefeated Plattsburgh team. Three members received all-tournament status. Coach Hourihan hopes for a strong second half. 58 The Canton Bear girls started the 1979-80 season with a bang. Winning the First Annual Heuvelton Invita- tional Tournament was an excellent start to their steady 4-4 record. The team is a young one balanced by the experience of a few strong veterans. Coach Hobbs was especially pleased with ‘-'outstanding runners” Katherine VandeWater and Jim Willits. Three members of the girls’ team finished up first team All-Northern while Jim Willits finished fifteenth in the Section and was an alternate for the State Meet. With many fine individual standouts, the meets were close, many of them lost only by a few points. Bali Davis broke the Section Ten record in the diving and Patty Abt broke the Section Ten in the 50 freestyle. The Varsity Bear icemen, under Coach Coseo reached the halfway mark of the 1979-1980 season with a 4-3-1 record. 1 Captains Kevin Lawrence and Mark Dean have turned in strong performances thus far and hope to lead the team to a j strong finish. BOYS’ VARSITY The Boy’s Varsity Soccer team had another exceptional season, posting a record of 10-1-2. The varsity booters advanced to the intersectionals and the states, playing well into November. The eleven starters received All-Northern recognition, while Coach Dusharm was awarded Coach of the Year. Under the direction of Coach Sue Walts, Co-captains Maureen Weeks and Sandy Smith led the Varsity Girls' Soccer team through a fine 7-3 season. The highlight of the year was beating then undefeated Massena on Raider territory 4-0.
