What was it like growing up in our little town, going to school in the rambling com- plex of buildings perched on top of the hill? When we were kids, life was biking around the block on a rickety tri- cycle, flying down the slide into the muddy brown water at Taylor Park, and sledding down the icy hill behind the Banford School. We watched wide-eyed when the Middle School sprouted up next to the elementary School. Within a couple of years, we were racing along the new green carpets, strug- gling to open our bright orange lockers, and clambering over the shiny fiberglass chairs in the lecture halls. In scenery I like flat country In life J don't like much to happen. In personalities I like mild colorless people And in colors I prefer gray and brown. My wife a vivid girl from the mountains says, Then.why did you choose me? Mildly I lower brown eyes- there are so many things admirable people do not understand. William Stafford Yoii don't seem to understand. I live WAY upstate, right near the Canadian border. Areyou serious? Near Canada? That's what I said. I didn't know people actually LIVED up there! On the last day of school, we exploded out of the build- ing, ready for two glorious months of sunshine and free- dom . In the summer we sav- oured ice cream cones in the park, sat in the cool shades of the front porch after help- ing Dad heave bales of hay into the wagon, and hit pop flies in Little League. We thought we'd never be old enough to be one of those huge teenagers, who look- ed so old and grown up, but before we knew it, we were in the high school. Finally, we could go to the dances, scream our heads off in the Olympics and get crushed in the chaos of changing classes. Growing up is a never ending series of adventures and good times, with a liberal sprinkling of defeats. We'll never forget what it is like to grow up in Northern New York, even if no one believes that human life can exist here. Canton is our town, a special place to us. They struggled through the sea- son which included the highlights of the Potsdam and Tupper Lake games, where Canton scored glor- ious victories. Bas- ketball team this season. The bandage brigade, as it appear- ed, would be on the verge of victory when suddenly tragic happenings would arise, result- ing in the loss of key players. The highlight of the year was the near defeat of Clifton Fine (Undefeated). 35 ROW 1: D. Maroney, J. Gilson, M. Butler, H. Mead, T. Jensen, D. Ritz, ROW 2: Coach Riggs, P. Varsity Wrestling: 9-3-1 The 77-78 Grapplers and Coach Riggs continued to show their determination and persever- ence throughout the season with a 9-3-1 record and a B- section- al title. The team will be losing 3 great assets this year, namely Bernie Corbine, Jeff Gilson, and Don Martin. You can count on a good season next year as the team has many young and talented per- formers returning. Good luck to Coach Riggs and to the mat ter- rors of Canton High. Bemie, you can't wrestle with your hand in your mouth, even though you do think you're tough. The J.V. WRESTLING TEAM had but one draw back this season. What can you do with half a team? The J.V.'s did well considering their shortage of men. They handled their opponents with the respect of winners. They went out and did their job when they had to, despite regular sea- son injuries. We give our congratulations to the daring members and to Coach Todd for their fine effort. As for future recruits, come on, we need you! Hoss, don't let him run away! 38 J.V. WRESTLING ROW 1: M. Dave Brossoit placed very well in the sectionals, and John Whalen also had a good record. The team is younger, and big- ger than last year, and morale and spirits are high. Pete the M.
