New faces . . . new teachers . . . new school ... no more car- peting! These are some of the traumatic changes we freshmen must go through when entering the high school--and leaving the middle school for good. Back in September it seemed as if we'd never climb out of the pit. It seemed like we'd be dumped on for the rest of our lives. Funny, just last year WE were the big guys. The year was by no means all bad, after all, we sure gave them a run for their money in the Olympics. And it's nice to be able to go to a good party once in a while. We also experienced the classes of Mr. Witherhead, Mr. Chisholm, Mr. Coir, Mrs. Colton--people we've been hear- ing about for practically our whole lives. Well, this year is over, and next year will be dif- ferent. Sophomores--hmmmm. . ... moving up in the world! 7 FRESHMEN: Row I: J. Legault, M. Masters, B. Mills, G. Lewis, C. Locy, S. Bailey, S. The ball's stuck to my foot. Ooooooh, what a kick! The BOYS' SOCCER team has gone undefeated for the last three and one-half seasons. During this time they have com- piled 47 wins and one tie! The team has an excellent lineup this year and, of course, had a perfect record. Heading up the team were captain Kevin Meenan, and assistant captains, Bill Hayes, Steve Goodwin, and Tim Stone. Much credit for the teams success must go to the coach, Mr. Smilgin. Through rain, sleet, and even snow, the team gave its utmost without a com- plaint. Each game was hard fought, but the smal- ler and quicker Bears faced a few too many- larger foes this season. Half of us probably are still a little foggy as to what BOCES actually is. BOCES is for stu- dents with a career goal that traditional education couldn't offer. Located just outside Norwood, BOCES offers vocational train- ing in many fields. Those stu- dents in carpentry, electricity, plumbing, and heating built a modern, ranch-style, split- level home this year. The nurses spend two days a week at Potsdam Hospital. Only a few of the classes have been mentioned, but the rest are just as well-planned and interesting. This program is especially appreciated by the students of the North Country. 35 Who do I throw it to? VARSITY BOYS SOCCER AND CHEERLEADERS: Row I: L. Richardson, J. LaDuke, C. Palmer, R. Donnelly, J. C A young and inexperienced Canton VARSITY FOOTBALL team took to the field seven times this season, coming away with only two wins. A mid-season victory over St. Lawrence Central and a sea- son-ending victory over Coach Audet's alma mater Tupper Lake, were very rewarding. The team made costly mis- takes and lacked size. Co- captains Ron Pike and Randy Spadaccini had good seasons, while key contributions were make by seniors Steve Gordon, Jim Aldous, Andy Audet, and Stu Gardener. The spring production, The Hobbit , was very creative and proved to be a crowd pleas- er. First team players were Mauri Maroney and Kim Sayer, and second team members were Mary Bowman and sophomore Cathy Hayes. Times were improv- ing, however, and next year the team will be looking to better its fifth place N.A.C. finish. Senior standouts Steve Monroe and Rick Simpson were awarded the first team All-Northern honors in the 100 yd. breaststroke and the second team All-Northern honors in 1 meter diving, respectively. Co-captains Bonnie Norton and Wendy Walts were honored First-team All North- ern. The other members gave the team strong support, not- ably Martha Ladison. 69 - Being a SENIOR is only partly as glamorous as it seems to be. Yes, we're in the last year of high school, we're the bosses of the school. Yes, the other kids look at us and say, Wow, they're the Seniors, I can't wait till I'm a Sen- ior! But being the oldest and most respected, we also have the most ex- pected of us. Not doing homework--only fresh- men and sophomores do that. Throwing food in the cafeteria--Seniors are too mature to do that. We do, however, have some glamour. When we march into the gym at the Olympics, every eye in the place can't help but be a little dumb - struck. Every kid wishes that he could go to a Senior party, and there is good reason for that! Mostly though, being a Senior is a lot of look- ing ahead into the future, wondering and trying to determine what's going to happen with college, or a job or whatever. By the time we are just starting to get things squared away, suddenly the year is over, and we're not Seniors anymore. 73 ' Rick Miller Tom Matzell 1 IK-’-; Stuart Gardner 78 Kelly O'Brien Randie Donnelly :V Debbie Ames Mary Jean Radway Ray Woodley Marshall Pharoah, Dave Perry, and Wang Chon Chris Mousaw Bob Durocher Scott Bennett I Alice Matteson Ed Stowell Greta Martin Mauri Maroney Abe Wilson Lisa Ladison Bruce Taylor Lynn VanNess 84 Gary Barcomb Linda Nelson Laurie Votra Roger Hutchinson Tom Holland 85 Tina Gilson Colleen Ames SKHHGnti: 87 Bonnie Brossoit Mike Travers T am my Burnham Rick Scott Eric Schisler Bob Klemens Laurie Cohen 89 Bonnie Norton Colleen Butler Jim Lawrence Andy McAdoo, Phil McMasters and Wayne Putnam. Julie VonSchiller had a superb season and, along with Beth Ruitberg, was instrumental in the Bears' wins. Judy Butler and Martha Barlow were key to the team's offense. The team will never forget the way Ann Danehy could set a pick. Although naivete held them back in the early part of the season, skill and unity push- ed them to victory in the end. 117 J.V. HOOPSTERS The J. V. basketball team had a successful 10 win, 8 loss campaign, which was good enough for a third place finish in the NAC A Division. The team was led by high scoring frosh Mike VonShiller. Rolf Waters, Steve Goodwin, Reed Whitman, and Darren Dusharm each contributed greatly. Chris Stiles, Carl Grunow and others added valuable bench strength when needed. The team had great enthusiasm and showed promise for Canton's basket- ball future. 121 Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Don't cry Andy, someone will ask you to dance. What would my mother say if she saw me on the arm of a man in a white coat. I always thought dancing like that was illegal. The spitoon's a-that-a-way. Shave that brush off your lip and we could pass for Juniors. 122 A Royal dance for the Queen• About 40 couples attended this year's Junior Prom which was held in the Middle School cafeteria. Even with some people straggling in late (won- der why?), the band got started about nine ofclock. Although the theme, Stairway to Heaven, had been used before, the evening turned out to be very unique. After the band quit, and after John Harrington and Jolene Hunt were named King and Queen, every- body headed out to Richardson's camp to end the evening in the ap- propriate manner. 123 124 The devils choir, It says it all! This year there seemed to be a lack of interest in the Olympics beforehand; nobody was signing up for the events, and practices were unorganized. But when the night came, spirit was as high as ever. They said, don't count the freshmen out, and for a while, there was good reason for saying it. Throughout the first half, the Green Leprechauns, led by Maureen Weeks Kevin Lawrence, dominated. Thoughts of oh my God, this can’t be happening were raging through the heads of many upperclassmen. The second half was a total turn- around, however, which found the juniors and seniors rally to clinch first and second, respec- tively. Sophomores finished third, and you guessed it, fresh- men in last place. 125 The sweet smell of success. VARSITY BASKETBALL: M. Locy, P. Lee, K. Sayer, D. Ricalton, H. Condon. Peggy Lee garnered A11-Northern First team status andKimSayer placed on the second team. Colleen Butler starred as play- maker and Kathy Lawrence, although playing only for a part of the season, added depth to the team. Experience will be a big factor next year in the team's quest for the A Divi- sion title. 127 VARSITY WRESTLING: Front: Manager C. Gordon. Row 1: C. Streit, J. Gilson, D. Taylor, K. McCollum, D.
