With the season half over, Canton won one game and lost four. Each game was a closely matched hard fought contest. Under the coaching of Mr. Barody, the girls were led by Martha Taylor, Mary Lawrence and Cathy Taylor. 67 The drudgery of early morning practice. Coach Martin’s J.V. From the first day of kindergarten to the last day of our senior year our class was busy, in one way or the other. The big event in the Banford School was watching chickens hatch in Mrs. Pries room. Now we realize how similar we were to those chickens—bit by bit breaking our way into life and wondering whether school was only the shell. : Anne Dunkelberg James Votra Sam Stone Andrew Silva Chris Blackmer Russell James Lee Anne Lowry warn Sarah Lawrence Kirk Stone Some of us started school elsewhere. Jeanne Terrillion, Sue Fisher, Bob Nelson, and Dawn Dawley attended the Morley school. Frank Besio, Kim Stiles, Paul Beaulieu, Kim McAllaster went to the Rensselaer Falls school. Some of our class also attend- ed the Catholic School. They were “blessed” with a nun who pulled any loose teeth she saw, with trips to the sugar bush, and with a trip to the Cathedral in Ogdensburg. Besides that they didn’t have to go to school on some of the days that the Ban- ford did. Janice Hazeltine Though the Banford School missed out on all that fun, the students weren’t totally neglected. They were entertained by Mrs. Meng standing on her head, and Mrs. Dingman’s orange tree. We played marbles, Barbie dolls, and tumbled on the sidewalk during recess. Also annual Halloween parades were held and prizes were given for the best costumes. Naturally, David Monroe won the prize in fifth grade as a baby, complete with his diapers and his bottle. Kathy Taylor Paul Beaulieu Doug Johnson Kathy Mager Greg George Nancy Ashton 90 Mary Lawrence Jenifer Boise Terry Reasoner Steve Myers By the time we reached sixth grade, we were the oldest in the Grammar School and loved the idea of being the “top”. It was a busy year for most of us. The chorus presented a musical called THE PRINCE OF PEDDLERS, starring Lee Brown as the peddler; Rick Sibbitts, the prince; and Sue Patterson, the princess. Also starring were Gary Sibbitts, Kathy Mager, Carol Coakley, Kathy Monteith, Carl Ayrassian, Terry Schmitz, and Laurie Norton. It was the custom then to choose a Pee Wee Queen and Princess. From our class Kathy Taylor was chosen as queen and the princesses were Jacki Davies, Sally Rood, Dawn Dawley, Terry Reasoner, and Kathy Monteith. Craig Streit We’ll never forget the time that more than half the class was sick from food poisoning. The Grammar School was really bare that day. Chicken anyone?? Each of us will have our own memories of sixth grade teachers. Mrs. Nash, Mrs. Petty, Mrs. Tupper, and Mrs. Rendon were there all year. One class went through three teachers: Mrs. Niles, Mrs. Farrell, and Mrs. Yodgis. One of the biggest days for all of us was when the whole sixth grade went to the museum in Ottawa. Canadians must have thought that they were being in- vaded when they saw three busloads of eleven, twelve, and thirteen year olds pile out with their cameras, Pep- si cans, and car sickness pills. Carol Coakley Mark Hall Patti Dewan Lower Right: Kirk Todd Waltha Gaye Leavitt Robert Weaver Gary Cougler 93 Gary Sibbitts Jeanne Terri Ilion Cricket Romey Mark Todd Dawn Dawley David Monroe 94 Janet Wilson Ames Greg George will probably never forget skiing that year. In one day of skiing he broke both legs and was in bed and on crutches for several months. Through movies in the auditorium, talks in the nurses office, and little books and pamphlets given out by the nurse, sixth grade girls were privileged to learn about the “facts of life”. When the guys couldn’t steal one of the girls’ books, they had to find their own. Soon it was almost June again and Orientation Day came. This was the day that sixth graders took a bus to the High School and spent a day there with a seventh grader to prepare us for moving from the Grammar School to the Big Time. The idea was both exciting and a little scary. 95 Nancy Mayhew Antonio Resende Maribeth Hutto Sue Noble Howie Maroney When seventh grade finally did come, we had to give up the privilege of being the top grade. We were on the bottom again—really on the bot- tom! We took grief from everyone from eighth graders to seniors, knowing that someday it would be our turn to give it out. Many new kids joined our class this year, since students from the Catholic School came to the High School. They had to share all the good and bad aspects of the new school with us. One of the worst aspects was the pass system. Everywhere we went, we had to have a pass with us—or watch out. Teachers were stricter about things then, including no gum chewing, no talking in study hall, and no wandering the halls. The boys couldn’t even make noise in the boy’s room or in would come Mrs. Miles. Mari Marsh Steve Briggs Russell Travers Ed Curry Lee Brown 97 Donna Lemieux 98 Kevin Mousaw Cindy George Seventh grade did have some good points, though changing classes and activities eighth period, in- cluding bowling, student council, and chess club made the days more in- teresting. It was during the summer after seventh grade that the Middle School was finished. This school complete with a pool, carpets on the floor, classrooms with no doors, a lobby, and a “Learning Resource Center”, was quite a change from the traditional school buildings we were used to. Grades five through eight were in the Middle School so once again we were the top grade. Though we were only there for one year, we made the most of it. The atmosphere was completely different—no passes, we went outside for some classes and we got to swim during school. For chemistry we had a real lab, our own newspaper, and our own Student Council. 99 Jacki Davies Barb Creasy Holly Bisnett Frank Besio Denyea Harrington mm Aura Morales 100 Cindy Gates Laurie Norton No matter how much we liked the other grades, there was something special about ninth grade. Although we were back in the High School, it wasn’t the same as in 7th grade. Being able to say “I'm in high school,” made the fact that once again we were the bot- tom grade more bearable. We had the Olympics, dances, sports, and parties to look forward to. Karen Tupper Sue Lyth Sue Patterson Wendy Potter and Paul Rosenberg 102 Kathy Rowe Sally Rood We’ll always have our own special memories of our freshman teachers. Remember Mr. Coir’s “witty” puns? One of his favorites was, “This year you have FOIL; next year it’s Reynolds Wrap.” Mr. Chisholm also had some of his own special sayings like, “You bunch of mental midgets.” Mr. O’Connell won’t be forgotten either, especially by a certain group of girls who learned that he didn’t appreciate anyone shining a mirror in his class while he was trying to teach. Those girls paid by writing and writing and writing . . . We won’t forget Mrs. Casella and Mrs. Dutcher either for all those great English Assignments. Lyle Newman Nancy Peggs 103 90 : Sue Carroll Mary Clarke Kathy Monteith Lewis LaClair and Sue Fisher Debbie Woodside 104 Joy Squires By our sophomore year we were pros at being in high school. We were a success at our first party, and at the Olympics where we heat the other three classes by at least three points. Our sophomore teachers were something to be remembered. Mr. Smilgin and Henry VIII, Mr. Hayden and slippery frogs, and Mr. ‘‘Jet’’ Reynolds and l 0 RUNS will always be in our memories. Rick Sibbitts Ron Card nor Bob Barnett Brad Barr Mary Peters Helmuth Wyzisk The summer of tenth grade marked the halfway point of our high school years. The big social event of our Junior year was the Prom. The theme “Imagine” was carried out by tbe use of crepe paper, champagne glasses, a fountain, murals, and hours of hard work. Women’s lib hit the hockey world so Sue Carroll, Terry Reasoner, Carol Coakley, Mary Lawrence, Laurie Nor- ton, and Kathy Monteith got out the sticks for a team. Members of our class were chosen for National Honor Society, and Foreign Ex- change Students. We won’t mention the Olympics, only to say that out of our generous spirit, we let those elder seniors have one victory while they were in school. Bob Nelson Tony Lamendola David Zimmer 107 The junior year was a big year for regents. Besides the regular ones in math and science, the social, English, French, and Spanish regents were given. To relax after all this work a party was held at Big Rock after the last regents was over: hot weather and soft drink, right? Some of our class had a very exciting summer. Mary Lawrence brought fame to our class and the entire school when she won a statewide junior golf championship and came in se- cond place on the national level. On September 4, 1973 our Senior year, the best Senior year yet, started. After all the years of waiting, the world was hardly ready or were we? Suddenly the future loomed over us and we frantically began searching for colleges or deciding about jobs, marriage, or th e service. A1 Locy Bruce Ames Bob Maloy Marion McDonald and Janice Gratto John Coffey 108 Trudy Kirkey Bob Grandaw Right from the start we plunged into all kinds of tests that were need- ed for college. The Regents Scholarship tests, lasting six hours, took care of one day. Later were the ACT’s and or the SAT’s. The blast of a fire alarm brought some of us out to find it was a real fire of questionable origin in a storage room of the high school. School was delayed for only an hour, but every little bit of ex- citement helped. We got an extra dose of excitement at the Olympics when the SUPER seniors creamed the oth er tii ree classes. This year was the first time the Olympics had a theme. The teachers par- ticipated in the greaser theme by wearing bobby socks, saddle shoes, long skirts, and slicked back hair. Everyone enjoyed the theme during inter- mission, especially the jitterbugging by Miss Todd and Mr. Donnelly. 109 Jim Stone Six more members of our class were inducted into NHS this year. Instead of the usual speeches, National Honor Society presented a skit about the Wizard of Oz who had the power to let peo- ple into NHS. It is during our senior year that we started looking back and remembering the good and bad parts of high school. All of us will have our own special memories. For instance . . . Remember get- ting your license and the first time you took the car at night? Remember your first party, parties that got raided, or getting caught by parents or cops after a night out? Remember getting caught leaving school by Mrs. Breckenridge and getting “talked to” by Mrs. Almstead in the library? Remember Naiades, tumbling, all the sports you were in, band, orchestra, newspaper, and the yearbook? And remember all the proms, winter weekends, and dances you went to? Alan LeDuc Ron Murdie Kim Bisonette Dave Tracy HO Keith Cota Randy Neadom George Janack Don Goodwin The Prom, Class Night and graduation were getting very close. These special nights are reserved for seniors and many of us wait for them with mixed emotions—both happy and sad that it means the end of school. We’ll remember the people that were in our class and had to leave us: Gordon Stone, Janet Segal, Ted Stratford, Laurie Lyd- man, Melissa Ellard, Jenifer Vincent-Barwood, Mike Mead, Robert Sovie, Ernie Doyle, and Stanley Perrault. As our high school years come to an end, we’re left wonder- ing again about life; what we’ve accomplished so far, what’s left to do, and what the future will bring. We’re no longer like the baby chick pecking his way out of the shell. We’ve advanced to the stage of strutting around, hopefully still learning more and more about the world around us, and resisting any temptation to go hack to the shell. i m Wondering if we ll last one more year JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Sitting: President J.
