Pro 19691 RE we ever surpr1sed to see a b1g poster on the F1re House, Just above Mr Bell's rock1ng cha1r, read1ng '1961 D1ngl1ng Brothers Circus Com mg to Town, with Anlmal Acts, Assorted Freaks, and Cotton Candy Be1ng great c1rcus fans, we were there at the gate even before lt was opened Much to our astomshment, the tr1m un1formed gateman IS Arlyn P1ke Arlyn 1nforms us that th1s circus IS Just full of surpr1ses See1ng a c1rcus IS not a c1rcus w1thout popcorn and cotton candy, head over to a strlped counter where Paulme Bra baw, dressed 1n a tr1m p1nk un1form, IS sell1ng re cord amounts of her wares Paulme tells us we should see the managers of the c1rc11s before we en ter the b1g top for the ma1n show On our way to the br1ght red tra1ler where the managers do bus1ness, we stop to l1sten to an energet1c barker whose accent IS very fam1l1ar Mov1ng closer, we see that he IS none other than Bob Furman, who st1ll has that Bos ton1an twang Bob tells us not to miss hlS show Caut1ously then we enter the red tra1ler Seated on two fold1ng cha1rs are the managers, George Healy and Roger Wa1te They are qu1te the businessmen, as IS ev1dent from the cheap clgars they re smok mg They tell us they re busy at the tlme on a talent search for the1r Fem1n1ne Foll1es show George wxnks and tells us they have some llkely prospects m Potsdam Leav1ng the tra1ler, we meet Ioan Ellsworth and Ioy Anthony dressed in very fetch1n Or1enta1 cos tumes Ioan and joy inform us they re ass1stants to Moud1m the Mag1c1an, who IS none other than E IS Pierce El.l1s always could work m1racles Hear1ng a clank of bar bells, we follow the crowd over to a Slde show where 'the Strongest Man and Woman on the Cont1nent are featured Doing the1r routines on the platform are Dick Brown and Carolme Savage, show1ng muscles as well as b1g smiles Next door, the f1re eater and the sword swallower are featured, be1ng none other than Albert Todd and Lee Mousaw At the animal cages two fearless young lad1es 1n red uxuforms are guardmg the per1lous lions They are Bunny Palmer and Pat LaCla1r See1ng some more side shows, we stroll on to fmd the amaz1ng Siamese twins Standmg on the platform are Barbara B111 and Peggy Woodyat Those g1r1s always did st1ck together Beyond them IS the darmg and fascm at1ng snake charmer We don t understand how Bar bara McMart1n can stand those snakes Checkmg on the t1me, we hurry over to the ma1n tent, wh1ch IS already f1ll1ng fast Charlle Lottie sells us t1ckets and assures us of f1ne entertamment ms1de just 1ns1de the tent we stop to buy some pea nuts from a sm1lu1g Helen Caswell It 1sn't long before the spotl1ght focuses on the r1ng below and the master of ceremon1es, lack Hol comb bows and announces the first act, featur1ng three trapeze artlsts, IIID Santimaw, Rachel Frase, and Roger Allen The three perform a thr1ll1ng act w1th out a net Those brave people! The next performers 1n the r1ng are the clowns,dressed 1n polka dots and wearing b1g red noses They are Dav1d P1erce, 11m T1erney, and Bruce V1ertel, and they leave the crowd roll1ng 1n the a1sles The thrilling tight rope walkers, B111 Redd1ck and Barbara Spencer, are breathtakmg on the narrow, per1lous ropes Then four beaut1ful wh1te horses are led into the r1ng, and Pat Farmer, Pluma Synovec, Genevleve LaFaver, and Ren1ce Wells are r1ding them The glrls do very clever tncks atop the horses and mer1t applause Then, r1ding on the trunks of three huge elephants, Barb ara Babcock Betty Caldwell, and Louise Noble per form stunts Next Pat Ragan Betty Murphy, and lean Amo lead a group of dogs mto the r1ng and suc cessfully put the animals through the1r paces Hearlng the roar of t1gers and l1ons we see a huge cage where the mighty beasts are sltting The tra1ner r1skmg death IS none other than Bernard Rodee We rather feel that Bernard needs more than hxs wh1p With these snarl1ng beasts Our attention then goes back to the ring, where Pete K1tay and Arlene Cunmngham are putting on a clever Juggling act am1d thunderous cheers The last act features Esther Wells, who d1V6S a hundred feet into a tank of water Our hearts stand in our toes unt1l Esther hits the water with a mighty splash Full of regrets that the show is over, we go out s1de Suddenly tempted to get a hot dog, we wander over to a refreshment stand where jim Finnegan and Don McCormick are selling food They inform us that the1r slogan is We serve everythmg even crabs T1red but very happy at see1ng so many friends, we leave the c1rcus grounds for home Pat Crowley Nancy Place 16 . 1 .
