The day we came to Canton Hrgh School does not seem so long ago now, but when we were freshmen lookrng toward thrs day rt was a drfferent story Four years seemed eternrty then but now, as we look back over those four years, they seem to have passed too fast Why rt seems only yesterday we yyere yyanderrng rnto the English room lookrng for algebra, learning amo amas amat rn Latrn I, and drscoverlng that 'The Wash was very drfferent from what rt sounded like The first dance we at tended rn the lower hall yy as quite an experience and qurte a scare We spent most of the evenrng boyerrng around the vrc, wonderrng how we with our hopping two step would compare wrth the senror Jrtterbugs but not qurte darrng to find out And to thrnk that only a year later we were spon sorrng our own dance the most successful lower hall dance of the year' Durrn the fraternity rn rtratrons the boys got hot under the collar, whrle the grrls got thrrlls as some luckless rnrtrate escort ed the lucky grrl to her own walk After a year the one time rnrtrates from our class were rnflrctrng the same rrgmarole on others It wasn t long before we were cheerrng our lungs out at football games whrle a few of our classmates watched hopefully from the substitutes' bench In our sophomore Junror and semor years these substrtutes had grown right ofl' the bench and onto the field and y on many games to add to the record of our school yyerent demons and that rf yye drdnt chew gum like an elephant wrth the mumps or try to start a yerbal mutiny rn class they were actually human Many of the femrnrne srde of our class srghed over Mr Newton rn our freshman year and even a hrgh and mlghty seniors they seemed susceptible to Mr Smrth Although none of us adored oral Englrsh and often developed emergency rllnesses on that day yye were sorry to lose Mrss Boyee Four teen of our other teachers left probably the straln of a class llke ours' Uncle Sam called Mr Meng Hlsfory nd Mr Newton Mr Meng was back for half of our last year back to classes rn health and general scrence rather than rn Englrsh The loss of our teachers wasn't the only effect of the war whrch we felt Some of our own class mates left to Jorn forces wrth Uncle Sam Skip Howe, Arnold Hall, and Harold Moore Other fel lows rn our class Drck Mrchaels Johnny Reynolds 'rnd Tom Calnon, speeded up and graduated ahead of us Practice arr raids were 'reyer much hard shrp for some reason especrally when they were tlmed to arrrve rn some brarn racklng test The Vrctory Corps flourished and was at one trme the largest organrzatrorr ln the school The V 12 unrt at St Layy rence made rts presence felt for a w hrle eyerywhere we looked, navy blue predomrnated Our hrgh school days also saw peace restored to the world Remember srttrng rn studv hall May 8 1945 wartrng for VE Day to be offrcrally anrouncedq Well remember the afternoons spent over cokes rn the Eskrmo and the mrdwrnter hot chocolates Well remember the long long wart for our class rings and the flurrv when they drd come each yy rtly rts golden bear Well remember the new name Canton Central School and the rnflux of Rens selaer Falls students but well try to forget the way they dropped off one by one to DeKalb Junc tron untrl not a srngle one was left rn our class We ll remember the penny luncheons when someone would buy a record 87 cents worth and the yyrnter carnryals with the
