2 3 Bill Shori was christened Gulielmo Amos Shori on Decem- ber 21, 1942. His elementary and secondary school years were spent in Canton. Ohio, and he received his diploma in 1942. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Educa- tion from Kent State University in 1948 and his ME in 1951. His teaching certificate states his qualifications in industrial arts, driver training and American history. A certificate can- not possibly state his qualifications as an educator. Mr. Shori married Rose Marcoaldi and then began teach- ing in Marlboro Township in 1948. He returned to the Canton City Schools in 1957 as a teacher and prior to coming to Canton South in 1966 he taught at Marlington for five years. Uncle Sam needed a sergeant in the Army, and for two years Bill served his country. As a family man. Bill is a devoted husband and father. He and Rosie have four children, Father Nick, Donald. Michael and lovely daughter Janet. In 1970 Mr. Shori was honored to serve as representative from East Central Ohio Industrial Arts Association to the Ohio Industrial Arts Association. To Rose and Bill and their family, Canton South wishes many years of continued happiness. SPOTLIGHT Cullen R. Pfendler, a graduate of Washington High School, attended John Carroll University and then the Ohio State University, from which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. Mr. Pfendler is deversified in his teaching preparation, and his certificate states industrial arts, driver education and sci- ence. He began teaching the 8th grade at Bloomingburg, Ohio, and remained there six years. He came to Canton South in 1956 after serving three years in the Coastal Artillery Anti-aircraft Infantry. Mr. and Mrs. Pfendler are the parents of nine children and have two grandchildren. Retirement will certainly not mean idleness for Cullen Pfendler because he has many avocations; not the least is his tree farming. 4 Vocational Wing ——afcajMa—r t nr— Our new vocational wing opens many opportunities for our vocational students. The fields are Cosmetology, Auto Body, Auto Mechanics, Food Service, Welding, Business, Building Maintenance, Diversified Health Oc- cupations, Account Clerk, Steno Clerk, Office Duplicat- ing, Cooperative Office Education, Occupational Work Experience, Diversified Cooperative Training, and Multi Area Job Training. This honor deservedly comes to her be- cause of her numerous contributions both in an out of school for the betterment of mankind. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald J. Franklin, who are also alumni of Canton South, Debbie has lived in Canton Local all her life. In her elementary years at North Industry, Debbie was equally at home in the library as a helper and on the track as a fifty yard dasher. At Faircrest Memorial Junior High School, she was a spelling contest winner, choir member and cheerleader. During her high school years her activities are too numerous to mention, but her unusual achievements are class president two years, attendant to the football homecoming queen, Repository Teen-Ager-of-the-Month and Year, valedictorian and winner of the Ethel Swanbeck, Panhellenic, and U S. Steelworkers of America Schol- arships. Deborah Franklin has prepared through Medical Explorers and the State Board Course of Study to enter Au- Itman Hospital School of Nursing. Congratulations and continued success. 12 Outstanding Senior Boy John Parsons John Parsons, Outstanding Boy of the Class of 1977, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Parsons. John has brought much positive publicity to his high school by winning a full scholarship sponsored by the Timken Educational Foundation, earning a place in the forensic speech national competition in the state of Washington, and being named Repository Teen-Ager-of-the-Month. As valedictorian of his class pursuing the state board course of basic studies, John has earned a perfect grade average in high school. Co-curricularly he has been active in diversified interests. He has shown his art projects at the local art show; received superior rating at the science fair on the polarization of light, volunteered as a spotter for the football games and earned a third year Pipestone and God and Country awards in scouting. John will attend Case Western Reserve University in September. Their gain is our loss. 13 With the combined efforts of teachers and students inter- ested in creative writing, the Canton South Literary Guild was formed. Mrs. Kibler and Mrs. Pedicord, the group's advisors, worked in co-operation with the students to produce Odyssey, a literary publication. It is a book containing original works of poetry, prose and illustration submitted by Canton South students. Members of the Literary Guild include; Tim Beaver, Michal Sorenson. Brenda Capps, Connie Everett, Cheryl Van Vooj- rhis, Mark Hale, and Sherry Wilson. 17 NONSENSE While walking through the fields one day On a bicycle of blue . . . I ran into a little child, His age was twenty-two. I asked him for a candy bar. . . He said he didn't drink, And every time I said my name He told me his I think. He said he hated talking In his sixty-minute speech, And even though he ran a school He didn’t like to teach. If this sounds like your principal, Don’t generate a fight . . . His students are as free as birds, (They have no human rights!) by Brett Stoneking Life is like a stream Flowing and ever changing To the ways of man. Jeff Sterling INDIVIDUAL THINKING by Darrell Debassey Whitehurst Individual thinking will get you where you want to be; If you notice you're nowhere, you must be like me. You must strive hard and long before you reach the top. And when you get there, imagine that you can t be stopped. It takes individual thinking to do what you want to do; Don't let anyone tell you different, or you'll end up blue. There is a place under the sun for everyone; I'd like to see you where you want to be; Just remember to think individual.'' and be like me. TO A LOVE by Bret Stoneking The ecstasy I sing of must o'er with The heart-swept anguish and the pain within. Unto the mire of thought your touch rings through. Awakes my destiny to dreams of you. Perfection lies inept to charms and grace; The morning mountains echo from their face To tell you of the crystal, golden hue . And wish that they could reach and caress you. I would for thee risk all that is my own Without a single word, a sign or moan. And feign not in the justice of an end To all existence such as that I fend. Yes. I have found the end to all men's strife. For in your arms my soul hath found new life! Life . . A poem has stanzas That can be altered A song has words That can be changed. A story has parts That can be left out. But this is life, So don’t Try to change it. Alter it. or leave parts out. For you might be left holding the missing pieces! Kay Hassig THE BEST by Sandy Towberman Of all my joys, the greatest pleasure. Of all my dreams, the fullest measure. Of all my loves, the dearest treasure. And my cherished prize: A heart simple in charity. A spirit humble in purity. A mind sweet in serenity. I found within your eyes . PEACE! by Sandy Towberman Let us not debate. But watch and wait; Why try to top Each others devotion? For we know full well. That time will tell Whose love the drop. And whose the ocean . . . 19 The Unsung Heroes Through the course of the school year, many dedicated individuals do- nate their precious time and efforts to maintain the high standards and emminent morale for which C.S.H.S. is so noted.
