WILDCAT COUNTRY K DEDICATION Those of us who are graduating in 1973 hopefully have a definite advantage over those who graduated in 1926. In three years the stock market was to crash. Names such as Charles Lindbergh. Will Rogers and Herbert Hoover were to make the headlines. Another Herbert made the scene in 1926 when a diploma from Cambridge High School was awarded to a man named Hackenberg. Many events have taken place in the life of this young man who was destined to be an educator first and a coach second. After earning an AB degree from Wittenberg in 1930, he came to a small high school in Stark County which was then called Canton Township High School. He taught English I, geography, economics and history. The school was so small that the faculty taught whatever there was to teach. College majors and minors were incidental. His great interest in sports kept him occupied after school in the guiding of young athletes toward perfection in their chosen sport. In 1939 Herbert Hackenberg received an MA degree from Columbia and went to Canton Lehman to teach. In 1956 he returned to his high school Alma Mater to teach, but destiny returned him to Canton South in 1960 after a few years of being self employed. The last twelve years with Canton South have made this Christian gentlemen a legend in his time.” Many people do not know the intimate life of this educator because he seldom talks about himself. In World War II he was with the United States Navy as a Recruit Drill Instructor. While in the Navy he met Miss Wilma Osborne from Utah, whom he married. Their family of two fine sons, alumni of Canton South, gave the world a Doctor of Osteopathy and a basketball coach, John and Larry, respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Hackenberg also boast a fine grandchild, John Herbert. Space does not permit philosophizing about this outstanding educator. Suffice to say that Canton Township — Canton South is extremely proud to dedicate its 1973 Moderian to Herbert Hackenberg, The man, the teacher, the coach, the legend behind many success stories of Canton South students. 5 CLASS DIVISION innuit SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Ray Timberlake, Vice-President: Kevin Doerschuk, President: Debbie Grossenbacher, Treasurer: Deb Balog, Secretary OUTSTANDING SENIOR SENIOR GIRL Debra Lynn Bednarz, Co-Salutatorian of the class of 1973, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bednarz. Debbie is a young lady with much physical energy and she uses this youthful vibrance in a posi- tive manner. Debbie is a versatile musician, playing the trombone. She is an offi- cer of the GAA and was an outstanding organizer of and player on the Red and Grey Basketball Team. Two of the highlights of Debbie’s high school career were her partici- pation in Girls’ State as a junior and her selection as Teen-Ager-of- the-Month as a senior. Her fellow classmates elected her president of the sophomore class; she has served on the Student Executive Board and holds a two year membership in the National Honor Society. She has held the vice presidency and presidency of the Tri-Hi-Y and membership in the Junior Classical League. Ohio Northern University has named Debbie a Getty’’ scholar, Timken has named her an alternate in their scholarship program and the Elks have granted her a monetary honor. BOY Robert Edward Smith, Co-Valedictorian of the class of 1973, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Smith. Robert graduates with a four point average. Robert, although quite active in many endeav- ors has never permitted his academics to become secondary and thus he has added to his accomplishments the earning of the State Board of Education Award of Distinction. As a sophomore, Robert was elected class president and served on the Student Executive Board. He joined the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and became its secretary as a senior. He was tapped for the National Honor Society as a junior and also joined the Hi-Y and became its vice president as a senior. Civically Rob- ert has been active in Environmental Crisis Society. Junior Achievement and Gold Rush Walk. Athletically Robert has played defensive halfback in football and pitches for the baseball team and played intramural basketball. Robert was recently named a Timken Company scholarship recip- ient and plans to use this grant to study chemical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. 17 FLOWER White Rose” COMMENCEMENT CLASS OF 73 MOTTO COLORS Prepare now for the future, Burgundy and Pink that is where you will spend the rest of your life!9’ GRADUATION The world is open lo us now. Wolverton On These I -lllll l’(iVS I ' CLASS PROPHECY The year is 1983. The date Jan. 14. As Carolyn Greavu and Bob Lake settle down in front of their T.V. preparing themselves to enjoy the great inauguration of Pres. Doerschuk with their 4 kids yelling in the background. Bob exclaimed, Don’t Deb Grossenbacher and John Hayden make good newscasters? And look who they have for their guests today; Mary Schott, Penny Tripp, and Beth Aukerman.” Carolyn said to Bob, Did you hear who’s going to the inauguration? The mayor of Waco, Steve Bradshaw, and his wife Joyce Steigerwald.” Where did you pick up all of this gossip?” Bob asked. Well, while Caressa Bishop was doing my hair today I overheard Nancy Abbott, the wife of the mayor’s chauffeur, Dennis Barnes, talking about it.” Meanwhile, back in Waco at the Bradshaw house, we hear their maid, Connie Hoobler, bidding the Bradshaws adieu. Driving down their mile-long driveway, they wave to their gardener, Randy Holdsworth; their butler. Bill Cleary; their upstairs maid, Pat Brown; and their gate keeper, Jim Dewitt. Their first stop is Bob Brenner’s gas station. It was exciting to see Don Miller and Steve Brown working as mechanics. They had great help from Lynn Long and Loretta Giffen pumping gas. Over in one corner we saw Judy Maston fixing a flat for Leon Tanner, Diane Bailey, Diane Barlow, and Wayne Barrick on their way to the inauguration. Back on the road again we saw Kirk Dickinson, Chuck Cotyk, Kim Froelich, and Miranda King, hitchhiking to the big sock hop” for the new President. After driving awhile we stopped at Fuller’s Hot Dog stand and we were very much surprised to see Mel Mikunda and Sue McCollough fixing some hot dogs and fries. Munching away at hot dogs we saw the Foughtys, Diane and John, with Debe McGuyrt and John Hockensmith. We found ourselves behind schedule and hastily sped away only to be delayed by the shrieking siren of officer Ken George, but lucky for us Ken forgot his ticket book and we got off with just a warning. Finally, we arrived at the new Hilton-Shankle and there was Big Dennis with his wives Kathy Baum, Debbie Ries. Judy Knapski, Barb Caporli, Darlene Herbert, and Jackie Johnston. The doorman, Dan Mason, led us to the good-looking bellhops Bruce Davis, Joe Ross, and Mike Skipper. After checking in we were ushered to our suite to find that directly across the hall were staying David and Cindy (Riffle) Ash. They were entertaining Ray Timberlake, Debbie Balog, Lorraine Flott, John Brickwood, Jane Sal, and Allen Westover. Steve and Joyce decided to check out the lounge. As they entered the elevator operated by Nelson Freshour, they tramped on Darlean Green, Doralee McWhorter, Darlene Teis, and Sharon Perry. Suddenly the elevator jerked and stalled. Maintenance man Dennis Schleappi slithered through the emergency exit and talked the elevator back into working condition. Eventually we reached the 1st floor. Steve decided to buy some gum and Joyce pursued the magazines. Chomping on her gum, Sherrey Rippl sold Steve an eight stick pack of Juicy Fruit, while Joyce flipped to the center fold of Cosmopolitan. Lying there on a bearskin rug, wearing nothing but a tie, was Craig Lechner. This was almost too much for any person to cope with so Joyce suggested to Steve maybe a ginger ale on ice would help. As they walked up to the bar, who should be standing there mixing a scotch and water, none other than Rick Hull. It wasn’t too much of a shock to see him in this business, but when he informed them that he only worked first shift and Carl Busnick, and Scot Christiansen occupied second and third and that Roy Bcvington, Dave Anderson, Scot Breedlove, and Dave Myers were now in apprenticeship, they could hardly believe their ears. Just about this time a piercing crash was heard out in the lobby. They ran to investigate. It seems that Jeanne Manly, Suzanne, Hager, Mary Malavite, Nancy Semple, and Diane Smith were helplessly caught in the revolving door, and as fate would have it, Jeanne, tripping on her shoe string, ended this nightmare by stumbling through the glass door. They called for Dr. Steve Jolly, the house doctor, only to find that he was out of town. Quickly thinking Steve ran and called Haddad's ambulance service, in a flash they were there and Jeanne was being carried out on a stretcher by Tim Shonk and Gary Riggle. Rich Dulin was given strict instructions to run ahead and inform Coffman-Conrad hospital an emergency case was on the way. This was too much excitement for one day so the Bradshaws decided to retire to their suite, catch a quick shower and prepare for the inauguration. Continued on Page 162. Closely following the brass band was Anita Krebs and her Marcherettes. The group consisted of some familiar faces, a few of which were Deb Bednarz, Theresa Butts, Denise Carmin, Melissa Fetters, Helen Fritchley, Holly Haag, Loree Joy, and Diane Wessels. The laughs of the parade were provided by Bigler’s clowns. Performing dangerous feats on the unicycle were Dave Caldarelli, Daniel Minor, and Dwain Moore. Following close behind were the jugglers, Harold Maze, Mark Porter, and Gary Thompson. The circus played a major role in this parade and it was very generous of them to lend their main attraction. Muscle Mountain Man Wright, and his manager Nancy Shirley. The next attraction was the All-American dog team with their trainers. Holly Janson, Gayle Brooks, and Ernest Burkes. Bringing up the rear of the circus portion of the parade was George Tansek and his Tin Can Band. Performing to the beat of this music was his Go Get’em girls, Becky Richards, Reana Salisbury, Margie Wolak, Barb Wilks, Vikki Neading, and Linda Moore. As Steve took a quick look around the crowd, who should he see warming up for Big Time Wrestling but Lea Borland, Misty Millican, Karen Repasky, Sue Davis, Linda Flynn, Sue French, and Edie Fry, all members of the women’s lib club. It was so exciting yet shocking to see Charlotte Crowther screaming out orders to her army platoon consisting of Debbie Barton, Rick Bice, Rick Broadwater, Kim Brown, June Wolverton, Randy Yerian, Mike Walters, Darlene Warren, Bob Smith and Ken Millard. The Final Feature of the parade was Peggy Charley’s animals consisting of elephants, gorillas, and lions. Following close behind with shovel and wheel barrow was the clean up crew, Pat and Patricia Himes, Tom Brantch, Will Brickwood, and Ann Briestensky. After the parade ended it was announced that John Deibel, the captain of the Canton Police 162 Dept., was to meet at Freshour and Griffith streets to lead the Presidential motorcade to the White House. It was a great honor for the Canton Police Dept., composed of Ed Casto, Dean Caley, Jim Burkett, Terry Diebel, Dave Hanood, Francis Inman, Mark Herbert, Steve Lockhart, Ray Wright, Dennis Smith, Jim Moats, John Nolan, and Cliff Nevel, to be in charge of the duties of the day. The motorcade was stopped abruptly at Vermillion St. when Pres. Doerschuk decided he wanted to stop and see the organ grinder, Cara Thouvenin, and her monkey, Deloris Johnston, perform to South Rampart St. Finally we reached the White House and the ceremony began. It started with a prayer given by chaplain Bob Scott. Next on the program were speeches by Senators Betty Mathews from Miss., Mark Rine from New York, Sheryl Steinbach from California, Gary Weaver from Iowa, Cheryl Welker from Texas, and Diane Zirhut from West Virginia. The entertainment was given by The Birth of the Nations dance team, who filed out in this order: Sue Szakacs, Helen Witts, Terry Smith, Peggy Brown, Sandy Caudill, Linda Childs, Gail Caldwell, Madelyn Compson, Jill Cramer, Sheila Cramblett and Cindy Cupples. Several institutions presented awards to those who contributed to the political campaign. Among the recipients were Dadisman College, Decker Trucking Service. Dickerson’s Dog Kennels, Ellis' drug and pharmaceutical supplies, Evan’s Bakery, Garrett’s motorcycle and auto shop, Gordon’s dance studio. Grove Wine Liquor Supply, Hanna Paper Co.. Hardesty’s Construction Co. and Jackson Camera shop. Vice Pres. Steve Mayes and his stunning wife, the former Cheryl Lillie, were there to accept all these awards with great appreciation. The food for the inauguration was catered by Violet Johnston’s catering service. We were informed that the meat was provided by Roush Rice Beef Farm, so we knew it had to be grade A. The vegetables were donated by Joe Mayle’s muck farm, desserts by Dave Slutz’s goodie shop and the drinks by Pam Meister and Jim McWhorter’s state store. As the music began by the Potts Brothers orchestra, the couples began to float out onto the floor. As Steve and Joyce began to dance they ran into many familiar faces, such as Jeryl King, Kathy Kerr, Mike Kirby, Judy Jones, and Jim Lanham, Diana Kovach and Dan Laubacher, Loretta Larke and Roy Lee, Cindi Mangus and Tom Malavite. Just for a change of pace the M.C., Robert Mauter, decided to 163 Strobel. We learned through the M.C. of the floor show, Roger Sutton, that Miss Oregon (Darlene Rayner) and Miss Rhode Island (Debbie Richards) were also in the audience. The show started with Sue Riggenbach and Florence Smith singing a duet with Roy Syphers accompanying them on the drums. The next act was Dick Talkington’s dancing girls: Elaine Kelly, Sally Lehmiller, Loraine Lipinski, Vickie Thomas, Pam Walters, Joyce Warrick, Mary Weaver, Sandy Wells, Janet Wolverton and Cathy Wood. Joyce thought this act was kind of risque, but Steve enjoyed it very much. I wouldn't have ever thought that the next act would be play ing here. It was a male barbershop quartet with Joe Talbert, Larry Taylor, Dale Thompson, Roger Van Camp and Ken Van Pelt on piano. But the most entertaining event of the whole evening was Tom Eckinger and his wife, the former Jeanne Frank, and their singing birds. The Bradshaw’s finally reach home and as the story comes to an end we hear Steve say, It sure was fun but I’m glad it’s over!” have a dance contest, consisting of some oldies but goodies such as the jitter bug, twist, jerk and the watusi. Surprising enough, at the end of the dance the first 8 places were occupied by: 1st Gloria Mayle and Paul Merrin, 2nd Linda Mayle and Don Miller, 3rd Bonnie McCrae and Greg Moore, 4th Marie Mclnturff and Bill Mosteller, 5th Mary Mercurio and Bob Mczie, 6th Sandy Miller and Jeff Travis, 7th Marion Minor and Mike Murphy and 8th Patty Minor and Tim Narduzzi. This had really been quite an inauguration, but to top it all off everyone was invited over to Deb (Morgan) and Denny Pellegrini to help celebrate their 6th wedding anniversary. Well, seeing that the Bradshaws’ chauffeur hadn’t stayed for the inauguration, they decided to call Mike Patterson's taxi cab service as a means of transportation to the Pellegrini’s. Just as the cab pulled up, who should walk down the sidewalk but Lois Moore and Keith Nichols and Diana Morse and Brian Norris, so they all decided to squeeze into the cab and ride together to the party. The party seemed to be quite a drag so the Bradshaws decided it was time they get back to Waco. Back at the Hilton-Shankle we find the maids, Donna Lidderdale and Linda Markle, helping Mrs. Bradshaw: pack as Steve and the bellhops Joe Rodgers and Randy Reed pack the car. Soon we hear the doormen, John Remley and Dave Robertson, bidding the Bradshaws farewell. Finally they are on their way home. They soon find they are low on gas and what a better place to stop than Nelisher’s gas station. Somewhere along the way they decided they were hungry and stopped at Mosteller-Mullett nightclub. At first they worried about what to order, but when they heard the kitchen help was Annamarie Nemeth, Shirley Nicholas, Richard Numbers, Clem Ohman, Renee Oester, Richard Parks and Sue Penland, they knew anything they ordered would be delicious. While waiting on their food they talked with Marcia Pence, Dan Rollins, Shalla Perrenoud, and Glenn Sells, who were sitting at the next table. Dinner was brought on by waitresses Dorene Dick, Margie Mark, Diane Pryor and Barb Prittori, and the dishes were cleaned up by bus boys Mike Sawyer, Bill Shondrick, Regan Starkey and Dennis CANTON LOCAL ART SHOW 166 Jackie Johnston Renee Oester r Queen: Mary Malavite Sharon Perry Dehbie Ries 1973 TRACK COURT Head Majorette: Anita Krebs Band Student Director: Paul Johanning Club Advisors: Mr. Bowman President: Nancy Abbott Medical Secretary: Ann Nemeth Vice President: Mary Malayite Careers Treasurer: Suzanne Hager President: Mary Schott Speech Secretary: Jill Cramer Vice President: Kevin Doersehuk Club Advisor: Miss Kienzle Director: Mr. Deane Booth Secretary: Darlene Green President: Harold Maze Choir Treasurer: Jim Burkett Vice President: Judy Jones Manager: Craig Lechncr President: Nancy Hanna Library Secretary: Cathy Perks Vice President: Barbara Rush Club Treasurer: Cheryl Allhritain napii
