DEDICA TION The name Madge is a diminutive but her stature as an educator is not. Coming from Parkersburg, West Virginia the little golden haired daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham spent her school years in Warren, Ohio and graduated from Warren Harding High School. She then attended Kent State University and began teaching after two years of college. Persistence and perseverance paid off and some years later she gained her bachelor’s degree from said institution. Meanwhile great personal sorrow befell her but it was more than offset by the birth of the three “J's,” John, Joy, and James. Madge came to the Canton Local School District after having taught the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades (combined!) for two years at Warren Elementary School. At Waco School, then containing all eight grades, she taught the seventh and eighth grades which were not departmentalized. With this great diversity of experience Madge added still another dimension to her teaching when she accepted a position at Walker Junior High School and later at Canton South High School as a teacher in the special education program. Most recently we know Madge Steffy as a proud grandmother and wife of Willis Steffy, Attorney at Law. She is aesthetic in scholarly interests, soft spoken at friendly discourse, benevolent by moral temperament, strong in worthwhile convictions and devoted to her profession. It is an unpretentious but sincere gesture of appreciation that the 971-1972 Canton South Moderian takes in dedicating this edition to Madge Cunningham Steffy. 5 MODERIAN KING AND QUEEN Caroline Stock and Gust Malavite FOOTBALL HOMECOMING 71 Homecoming Court Junior: Suzanne Hager ’70 Queen, Donna Abbott, crowning Anjie Ferrell, ’71 Queen. I 51 Outstanding Senior Girl JANINE YOUNG She is always laughing. If you read no more description than that, you would know that we are describing Janine Young. But there is much more to be said. She is academi- cally superior as proven by her valedictory status and she is socially superior as evidenced by her many activities. She was selected as South's representative to the Presidential Classroom for Young Americans and was the Repository’s Teen-Ager-of-the-Month, and was named to the Honor Roll Hall of Fame as a National Merit Finalist. Jan will attend Harding College in Arkansas where she has received a scholarship in addition to being awarded a scholarship from the National Organization of the Elks. Jan has many positive traits, but the most outstanding is her desire to help others less fortunate than she. Perhaps Jan and the others of her generation who are as dedicated as she is will be the answer to the problems of the world. 52 Outstanding Senior Boy ED PALMER With a heritage one hundred per cent Canton South, Ed Palmer has made his school and his family, both very proud of him. Being a sportsminded young man, he has excelled on the basketball court but even more important he has been a fine example of high morals and Christian standards. He has at- tended the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Summer Camp and has used this great experience both personally and for others. Ed in his quiet way has mature strength. He is a leader with the qualities of dependability and sound thinking so essential to that role. Heidelburg College will have a good athlete and out- standing citizen when Ed Palmer enters the “Class of 76. 53 CLASS OF 1973 SNAPS 57 Nancy Abbott David Anderson Dave Ash Elizabeth Aukerman Diane Bailey Debbie Balog Dianne Barlow Dennis Barnes Wayne Barrick Kathy Baum Deb Bednarz Roy Bevington Rick Bice Bobby Bigler Caressa Bishop Francis Bonam Lea Borland Bobbi Bower Stephan Bradshaw Debby Bragg Tom Brantch Susie Brechbill Scot Breedlove Bob Brenner John Bnckwood Will Bnckwood Rick Broadwater Gayle Brooks Kim Brown Patty Brown Peggy Brown Steve Brown Ernest Burkes James Burkett Teresa Butts Elmer Bywater Dave Caldarelli Gail Caldwell Dean Caley Barb Caporali Denise Carmin Sandy Caudill Margaret Charley Linda Childs Scot Christiansen Billy Cleary Bill Coffman Madeline Compton Ed Conrad Chuck Cotyk Sandy Cox Sheila Cramblett Jill Cramer Tony Croston Charlotte Crowther Shery Cumpston Cindy Cupples Perry Dadisman Bruce Davis Sue Davis Arlene Decker John Deibel Terry Deibel Rick DeWitt Gary Dexter Dorene Dick Richard Dickerson Kirk Dickinson Kevin Doerschuk Rich Dulin 59 John Ebcrhart Tom Eckinger Gregory Ellis Melvina Evans Missy Fetters Lorraine Flott Linda Flynn Diane Foughty John Foughty Jeanne Frank Susan French Nelson Freshour Norman Freshour Helen Fritchlcy Gerald Froelich Edith Fry Jack Fuller Debbie Garrett Ken George Loretta Giffen Robin Glota Pam Gonzales Sheila Gordon Carolyn Greavu Darlean Green Kae Griffith Debra Grossenbacher Dwight Grove Holly Haag Jerry Haddad Suzanne Hager Shirley Hamman Nancy Hanna David Hanood Sharon Hardesty John Hayden Darlene Herbert Mark Herbert Pat Himes Patty Himes John Hockensmith Randy Holdsworth Connie Hoobler Laura Hooper Ronald Horne Rick Hull Francis Inman Kathie Jackson Hollis Janson Paul Johanning Delores Johnston Jacki Johnston Violet Johnson Stephan Jolly Judy Jones Loree Joy Diane Kalem Edie Kaulz Elaine Kelly Ken Kessler Miranda King Mike Kirby Judy Knapski Diana Kovach Anita Krebs Bob Lake Loretta Larke Daniel Laubacher Craig Lechner Roy Lee 61 Sally Lehmiller Robert Leslie Donna Lidderdale Cheryl Lillie Loraine Lipinski Lynn Long Mary Malavite Tom Malavite Cindee Mangus Jeanne Manly Margie Mark Linda Markle Dan Mason Judith Maston Betty Mathews Steve Mayes Gloria Mayle Joe Mayle Linda Mayle Harold Maze Bonnie McCrae Susan McCullough Deb McGuyrt Marie Mclnturff Doralee McWhorter Jim McWhorter Pamela Meister Mary Mercurio Paul Merrin Melody Mikunda 62 Dan Minor Patty Minor Dwain Moore Greg Moore Linda Moore Lois Moore Debbie Morgan Diana Morse Bob Mozie Bonnie Mullett Michael Murphy Dave Myers Tim Narduzzi Vikki Neading Cheryl Nelisher Ann Nemeth Clifford Ncvel Keith Nichols John Nolan Jack Nordick Brian Norris Renee Oester Linda Ollis Richard Parks Denny Pellegrini Marcia Pence Susan Penland Shalla Perrenoud Sharon Perry Jack Peterson Mark Porter Dalton Potts Barb Prater Darlene Rayncr 63 Randy Reed Vicki Reno Karen Repasky Sandy Rice Rebecca Richards Debbie Ries Cindy Riffle Susan Riggenbach Gary Rigglc Robert Rine Sherrey Rippl Dave Robertson Joe Rodgers Rex Rollins Brenda Rosette Joe Ross Barb Roush Reana Salisbury Mike Sawyer Dennis Schleappi Mary Schott Robert Scott Glenn Sells Nancy Semple Dennis Shankle Nancy Shirley Bill Shondrick Tim Shonk Bonnie Sinnett Michael Skipper Bob Smith Dennis Smith Diane Smith Florence Smith Jim Smith Terri Smith Regan Starkey Joyce Steigerwald Sheryl Steinbach Denny Strobel Roger Sutton Roy Syphers Susan Szakacs Joseph Talbert Rick Talkington Leon Tanner George Tansek Larry Taylor Darlene Tcis Vickey Thomas Dale Thompson Gary Thompson Cara Thouvenin Larry Tichenor Ray Timberlake Jeff Travis Penny Tripp Roger Van Camp Ken Van Pelt James Vermillion Mike Walters Pamela Walters Darlene Warren Joyce Wamck Mary Weaver Kip Weiand Cheryl Welker Sandy Wells Diane Wessels Allen Weslover Barbara Wilks Helen Witts Margie Wolak Janet Wolverton June Wolvej-ton Calhy Wood Betty Wooddcll Ray Wright Bill Wright Diane Zirhut PICTURES NOT AVAILABLE Connie Bennett Bob Budd Randy Carpenter Carol Good Jeryl King James Moats Debbie Richards Richard Showalter Gary Stallman Jeff Urban Ann Briestensky Carl Busnick Susan Geckler Fletcher Hunter Robert Mauter John Remley Jane Sal David Slutz Bob Stutler 66 Caryn Adams Cheryl Allbritain Myra Anders David Arbogast Jack Arran! Humrighouse There’s an open gate at the end of the road Through which each must go alone, And there, in a light we cannot see. Our Father claims His own. Beyond the gate your loved one Finds happiness and rest. And there is comforting the thought That a Loving God knows best. Richard J. Humrighouse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Humrighouse, was a senior at Canton South High School at the time of his death. It is always a sorrow to part with those whom we have known in varying degrees of closeness. To his family, who will forever feel the great loss and to his friends who miss his companionship, we ask that God grant them the memories which console. 77 BOA RD OF ED UCA TION Row 1: Leroy Slutz, Virgil Steinmetz.
