Last spring, the annual staff decided to use modern art as the theme and design for the 1958 yearbook. Also for the first time, We had a design made for the cover. Working with our own camera and the expert services of Troupe and Pluto, we were able to catch many of the school activities while they were happening. This year's staff includes five seniors, five juniors, one sophomore and one fresh- man. Jim Tressel and Margie Lape are three year members. Their experience and hard Work has been a leading factor in the production of this edition. Hard work and long hours have resulted in this, the finished product. Meetings, held weekly, are in- tended also to give experience in group participation. . This year's schedule included dances honoring the football, basketball, and track teams at which trophieswere awarded. We have sponsored full-length movie assemblies, initiated a suggestion box with cash prizes given for practical, constructive suggestions, and also initiated an overall school clean-up program which' was a tremendous success. 1Left to rightj T. L., there are two dif- ferent fields in which the student may perform. He may enter extemporan- eous speaking, in which the student is given an hour to prepare a speech on one of three topics which he selects, or he may enter oratorical declamation whereby he interprets great speeches of history. The fields of humerous and dramatic oratory involve reading and acting of excerpts from famous plays. For original oratory the student must write and prepare his own speech. Row 1 fleft to right? J. Page 25 DEBATE Participation in Debate activity is open to all high school students and is suggested for students preparing to go on to college. Debate affords oppor- tunities to become acquainted with vital questions of the day. Participants learn organization as they prepare their cases. They learn to think on their feet as they present speeches and refute the arguments of the op- position. Although the group was small at the beginning of the year, there has been quite a bit of interest shown on the part of underclassmen. Through the capable leadership of Mr. Leles, the team has made a fine showing, and with the experience gained this year, is looking forward to outstanding success in the future. DIRECTOR DANCE ORCHESTRA Our candid camera catches the dance orchestra providing entertainment during intermission at the Senior Class Play. They also gave out their famous renditions for several school dances during the year. Mr, Edgar Heist CONCERT BAND Under the direction of Mr. Heist, our concert band once again gave several Wonder- ful performances during the school year. The annual Christmas Concert was probably the highlight of the season although they performed for the dedication ceremonies and the spring concert. Page 35 BAND OFFICERS Row 1 rleft to rightl C. However, the sea of mud and water at Akron was iust too much and the band was forced to remain at home. ln addition to their regular footabll game appearances, they displayed their talents, along with other area bands, at a band show held in Massillon stadium. In addition to the numerous appear- ances at community functions, the choir is heard frequently in school assemblies. In addition, the group participates in the state sponsored contest. Wearing new robes, the members of the Advanced Choir made their debut at the Thanksgiving Assembly. The Advanced Choir is eagerly looking forward to duplicating its feat of last year in which they received a first place in state competition. This year, the contest will be held at Ohio State University in Columbus. One of the many functions of the advanced choir is their participation in the Christmas Concert. Row 1 fleft to rightb J. The maid ot honor was Ruth Stevenson, escorted by Jim Loutzenheiser. The Queen's court and their escorts were Senior Attendant Delores Cavelli escorted by Terry Wen- gerp Junior Attendant Margie Tressel, escorted by Jim Brown, Sophomore At- tendant, Nancy Stanley, escorted by Paul Kitzmiller, and Freshman Attendant, Mary Lapania, escorted by Jerry Miller. Following the game, a dance, spon- sored by the Junior Class, was held in the Queen's honor. Janey McClelland, last year's Queen, crowned Judy, who reigned over the dance. Music was provided by the Music Masters. Queen Judy and Maid of Honor, Ruth Stevenson en- joying their ride at the homecoming game. Co-captian Bob Graham crowning Judy Haney during halftime ceremonies. The Queen and her attendants seem to be enjoying the game or perhaps its from resting their feet. WILDCATS DOWN UHRICHSVILLE Our 195758 football season opened with a 19 - 13 victory over Uhrichs' ville. In the first quarter Terry Lan- zer went 15 yds, on a delayed end run to score the first touchdown. Bob Ehret ran the extra point. In the fourth quarter, Joe Briese ran around end for 46 yards and another Wildcat score. With less than a min- ute to play, Bob Graham threw a short pass to Briese who went all the way for the final touchdown. The play covered 49 yards. SOUTH HELD SCORELESS BY WOOSTER GENERALS On a rain-soaked field, South fell victim to the Wooster Generals. Wooster's touchdowns came in thc first and third quarters. Coach Layne had praise for his boys desa pite the loss. SOUTH DEFEATS GLENWOOD The South Wildcat team downed the Glenwood Eagles 20 - 13. At half- time South led 20 - 6 but Glenwood came back strong in the second half while our team seemed to suffer a letdown. SOUTH FALTERS IN SECOND HALF The Wildcats traveled to Sandy Valley to meet their neighboring rival, but after leading 7 - 0 at the half the Cardinals scored twice to win 14 - 7. The series is now even between the schools, at two wins each. LINCOLN LIONS TAME WILDCATS The Lincoln Lions defeated the Wild- cats 39 to 18. After roaring to a 26 - 0 halftime lead, the Lions faced a different team the second half. VVith Quarterback Bob Graham do- ing the passing, our team scored three times during the last half while the Lions scored 13 points. Graham threw touchdown passes to Dave Lehmiller and one to Bob Len- zy. LEOPARDS NIP WILDCATS Our inability to make extra points after touchdowns proved costly as Louisville came from behind in the second half to defeat the Wildcats 14 - 12. South scored twice in the first half on Graham to Lehmiller passes but failed to hit paydirt the second half. Louisville came back strong after the half, scoring two touchdowns and making both extra points. SOUTH LOSES TO AKRON HOBAN A disease called fumblitis caught the Wildcats as the Akronites pinned the fifth defeat of the season on our team. South had many opportunities but each time was stopped due to fumbles. McAllister scored South's touchdown on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter. DOVER DOWNS WILDCATS With quarterback Bob Graham lead- ing the way, South scored three times in the first half. On two occa' sions, Graham kept the ball after faking a hand-off into the line and scored without a hand touching him. However, the officials were fooled by his deceptiveness and called both plays dead at the line of scrimmage. Although apologies from the offi- cials were appreciated, the end re- sult was a 14 - 7 defeat for our Wildcats. FOOTBALL COACHES Q? I QE? . fleft to right? SENIORS OFFICERS BO B WA LTERS Vice-President JUDY HANEY Secretary TERRY WENGER President DAVID LLOYD Treasurer SENIOR CLASS HISTORY It seems like only yesterday we entered Canton South High School as confused freshmen. We collected tax stamps our first year to pay for our class party. Our sophomore year, realizing the .lr.-Sr. Prom was rapidly drawing nearer, we sponsored sock-hops and skating parties to boost our treasury. The paper drives also helped our finances and we climaxed this year with a dance for our class party' The first big event of our iunior year was selecting and ordering our class rings. We spon- sored more sock-hops and also the homecoming dance based on the theme Autumn Leaves. Excitement reigned supreme when we received our rings shortly before the Christmas vacation. Our iunior class play was an hilarious production entitled No More Homework directed by Miss Batten. Of course, the highlights of the year were the long-waited Jr.-Sr. Prom and Banquet with the theme Almost Paradise used for both events. Terry Wenger and Pat Phillips reigned as king and queen climaxing a banner year. We started out our senior year with a magazine sale. It really surprised us how seniorish we began to feel when our graduation pictures began to float around. Our class this year did Arsenic and Old Lace for the class play directed by Mr. Casper. Now, here we are, caught up in the whirlwind of events that make up graduation. But before we leave Canton South we would like to thank everyone who helped make our stay here so full of enioyment, education, and happiness. It has been earnest desire to inculate upon all students the principles and benefits of true democratic living Dauntless. and full of zest for living. youth stands on the threshold of life accepting the challenge of the future. As goes our youth so goes our nation. for it is the lifeblood of America. the promise of tomorrow. Squawk Box You can squawk all you want about how your government is being run. You can squawk to your family, your neighbors, the boys at the shop, or your barber-anyone who'll listen. Or you can praise your government. But your squawks and praise won't pay off unless you deposit them in the ballot box. The right to a secret ballot gives you an actual voice in your government. By casting your ballot at election time, you can help decide who is going to run the show. It's not like this in every country. Behind the Iron Curtain there's a lot to squawk about. But people have to keep it to themselves. If you com- plain out loud, you may get a one-way ticket to Siberia. At election time you may get a ballot, but there'll only be one person to vote for. But in America you can choose. And choosing means that you've got to do some serious thinking to make sure you vote for the right man. The secret ballot is a right you don't exercise every day. But the fact that elections are not daily occurences makes the right all the more important. And the guy who fails to vote has lost the right to squawk. Think it over-and then make sure you vote. It's your rightg so treat it right. TRADE-MARK REG. U. 5. PAT. OFF.
