The 1955-54 freshman basketball team experienced a very successful season. Playing one of the toughest schedules in the school's history of freshman com- petition, the team won 22 games and lost 4. The playing experience which the boys received while completing a 26-game schedule should be helpful to them when they meet up with reserve and varsity competition. The freshman team scored a total of 1335 points while their opponents scored 1005. This gave them an offensive average of 51.3 points per game and a defensive average of 38.6. The team had a well-balanced scoring punch with each player capable of hitting for the double figures. Let's hope the boys will keep working hard and have that desire to win so they will bring many victories to Canton South. C WANT TO BET THAT IT GOES IN. 7 THATS OUR BUGS! ROW 1: B. Throckmorton, R. It had a delightful ending and was enjoyed by all The play was under the direction of Miss Skriletz and consisted of thirteen junior class members. SURPRISE MEETING. Page 65 STUDENT COUNCIL The Canton South Student Council is composed of four representatives from each of the classes, chosen by the student body. The council is supervised by Mr. Young. Our president, Ricky Alborn, presides at every meeting. The Student Council meets weekly to help air the problems originating with the student body. At the meetings, committees deal with school safety, plan assemblies, cheer rallies, noon movie schedule, and dances. The council also has taken on the responsibility of chartering buses to the away games, selecting rec- ords for the dances, making posters for different occasions to help raise the school spirit, the selection of both varsity and reserve cheerleaders, and other all-student activities. The Council has worked hard this year in trying to please the student body. They have sponsored many Sock Hops which, everyone agrees, have proven very successful. The council also sponsored Twirp Season for a period of two weeks. During this time the girls asked the boys for dates, and the last week the girls were subject to the boys under Twirp rules and regulations. The students wound it up with a big Twirp Twirl where the girls did the escorting, tagging, and tabbing at the dance. These are only a few of the many things your Student Council has done to help better our school. We're sure that members of next year's council, whoever they may be, will have a hard time keeping up with this year's, but we know that they won't let the school or students down. OFFICERS l R. ROW 3: P. McFarland, R. Micha lek, R. Bowers, L. Barnes W. Ellis, B. Knox. The Junior Red Cross carried on an extensive membership drive during the 1953-54 school year with posters representing a basketball which would reach its objective, the basket, when the rooms contributed 100 per cent in member- ship. As the project for the year, the group held a used clothing drive, and with the other Stark County High Schools packed a gift chest that was sent overseas. The officers of the group meet the third Thursday of each month at Red Cross Headquarters in Canton to exchange ideas with the officers from other schools. Page 72 lock, J. Carothers, D. The purpose of the National Forensic League is to help students to over- come the fear of speaking before an audience. Any high school boy or girl may enter. Points are given to them through their participation in speech con- tests-individual events or debates. A person is a member when he has earned twenty points. The degrees of Honor, Excellence, and Distinction follow. New members this year were joan Koehler, jackie Nupp, Barbara Sedlock, Cora Shiltz, and Grace Stoner. Those who earned their Degree of Honor were Joan Koehler, Larry Lape, Forest Price, Sue Quinn, and Cora Shiltz. Helen Barr, Demetria Dennis, and Carolyn Yohe received the Degree of Distinction. Sally Tilton and Sue Quinn entered the state finals at Kent this year. Page 76 .H. A. The aim of the F. H. A. is to create better homes in which to live. We have had activities this year such as going to county meetings. Here we meet new friends, enjoy programs and recreation, and learn to conduct business meet- ings. Our money-making activities include selling food at the football games. Our own local chapter had a Christmas party and gift exchange. We are now planning a square dance called the Calico Capers, in which the boys will wear levis and the girls calico dresses. We also are making plans for a group of girls to attend the state meeting at Columbus April 24. A large group of girls are working for their Junior and Chapter Home- makers degrees. The girls organized a junior team and a Freshman-Sophomore team this year. They played teams from Middle- branch, Louisville, East Canton, Timken, and Lincoln. One highlight of the season was the first annual Red and Grey Girls' All- Star game, comprised of girls chosen by Miss Barr, Mr. Henderson, and Mr. Dowling. The game couldn't have been a closer contest or a more exciting one. It was won by the Red team C31 to 295 when Carol Thompson scored in the last 30 seconds of the game. After the game there was a Sock Hop, with Nick Barry spinning records. This will be a yearly affair with the girls. The girls would like to thank Miss Barr for all the guidance, advice, and friendship she has given them. Not even a police- man, unless he has a search warrant. Here, in America, your right to freedom from search Without warrant is guaranteed by The Constitution itself. How different behind the iron curtain! There, the people have no such protection. And even a solid oak door, strong enough to guard a fortress, can't keep out the secret police. When they want in they get in, eventually, even if they have to use a battering ram. But the flimsiest screen door in America can keep out the police unless they have a search warrant. Because we Americans take our rights for granted, itls hard to believe that there are pinkos and fellow-travelers amongst us who want to take away our freedom from search without warrant. It's just part of their plan to steal all our rights, like the right to own property, the right to work wherever we please, the right to vote secretly and all the rest. The best way to protect a right is to use it. So if you ever hear anyone come out in favor of permitting arbitrary search and seizure on some pretext or other, set him straight! Remind him that freedom from search without warrant is a right guaranteed every American by The Constitution. Remember, they're your rights, so treat them right! DO YOU KNOW YOUR RIGHTS? As Americans, we have the greatest freedom and the highest standard of living in the world. Help keep it that way by knowing your rights and guarding them well. Some of them are: Freedom of worship Right to secret ballot 'Rigbt to know how your union spends your dues of speech of the press Freedom Freedom Right to criticize officials ?Rigbt to know salaries of your union odirers Freedom from search without warrant petition government lor redress ol grievances know il your union officers are Communists know bow your union is run Right to 'Right lo ffkight to Right to speedy and public trial by jury Right tn help ol a lawyer 'Right to hear your employer's side of disagreements Right not to appear as a witness against yourself 'Rigbt to refuse to permit the check-off of union dues 'Right to go direct to your boss with a grievance Right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty Freedom Hlight to to own property work despite union jurisdictional disputes Freedom to worlz in any locality proper supervision ol your union welfare funds to start and manage a business to make a profit Right to Freedom Freedom 'Right not to be fired by union leaders Right to vote on cornpany's best offer 'These use tights you enioy under the Taft-Hartley law. This is a right enjoyed by members of United Steel Workers, C.l.O. only when the Taft-Hanley law is invokfd. THEY'RE YOUR RIGHTS, TREAT THEM RIGHT!
