DEDICATION i's'H'S'we-.xi To the memory of Robert Gauze, we dedi- cate this, the 1955 edition of the Canton South Year Book, Moderian. Maintaining a constant interest in outdoor life, he was a member of the Ohio National Guard, receiving basic training at Camp Carson, Colorado, later serving for more than a year with the United States Forces in Korea. As a graduate of Canton South in the Class of '49, he will be remembered as one who was well liked, and as a quiet and sincere friend of those who knew him. CLASS HISTORY ..t- It seems like only yesterday we entered Canton South as frightened, trouble- some seventh graders. Miss Mayer and Mr. Werstler were our first class sponsors and Jim Filliez was our first class president. Our big project was the paper drive, and we ended our first year at Canton South with a class party. We advanced into the eighth grade still uncertain of what was going on. Our president was Tom Daily and Miss Anderson and Mr. Allen were our sponsors. We had shadow-cutting in the Senior Carnival to build up our treasury. Our class party was the big event of the year. It seems that the girls never can beat the boys in baseball. At last we were full-fledged freshmen. john Matz was our president and Miss Anderson and Mr. Kiplinger helped make our year successful. We collected tax stamps to raise money. To wind up the year we had our class party. Our sophomore year began with Barbara Ferren as our president and Miss Seanor and Mr. Kiplinger as our very able class sponsors. Our big money-making project was our skating parties. We had a paper drive, collected tax stamps, sold balloons and tape, and collected class dues to help build up our treasury. Our big thrill was ordering our class rings. We had our class party at New Phila- delphia. At last we are Big Time Juniors. Barbara Ferren was our president once again and we still had our very able sponsors, Miss Seanor and Mr. Kiplinger. Since our junior-Senior Prom wasn't far away, we had to work very hard to make it successful. We collected tax stamps and class dues, had another paper drive, sold autograph books, and had our famous wrestling show in the Senior Carnival. Men Are Like Street Cars was our junior Class Play, and quite successful at that. Our junior-Senior banquet was held at the First Presbyterian Church. Martin Alexander played Hawaiian music to carry out our theme. At last it was time for the junior-Senior Prom. We danced to the music of Phil Mason in the ballroom of the Onesto Hotel. Our theme was Rhapsody in Blue. Our last event of the year was our class party at Lake O' Springs. And now our senior year with all of its thrills and excitement. Jerry Haney was our class president. Miss Seanor, who was a great help to us during most of our high school days, and Mr. Goerke were our sponsors. The magazine sale was our big project. The boys and girls had a contest to see who could sell the most magazines, and the girls won. The boys treated us to a weiner roast. Too bad it had to snow, but thanks anyway, boys. We collected stamps, paid class dues, and sold soap kittens to raise money. Our Class Play, Mother Is a Fresh- man, went over big. We chose our class colors, had our class pictures taken, Rita Lesh wrote the words to our song, chose our class flower, and ordered our invitations. The Prom which we received from the juniors was swell . . . thanks! Finally Baccalaureate and Commencement. After six wonderful years at Canton South we knew it had to end, but we know for sure we will always remember Canton South. The play was directed by Miss Skriletz. ....t.. PAT ZUBER Queen JERRY HANEY King UNIOR-SENIOR PROM The Junior-Senior Prom was held May 17, 1952, at the Onesto Hotel. This was the first year the prom was ever held away from the school. We chose Rhapsody in Blue as our theme. The main event of the evening was the crowning of our queen, Pat Zuber, and king, jerry Haney, with the orchestra furnishing background music of Rhapsody in Blue. The court attending the king and queen were Shirley Castanien, Barbara Ferren, Shirley Haines, and Rita Lesh, with their escorts: jim Coffy, Dale Meek, Glen Richardson, and Leroy Terrett. NNUAL TAFF This year, for the first time, underclassmen were admitted as members of the Annual Staff. In addition to the thirteen senior members, there were also ten juniors, four sophomores, and three freshmen. The entire membership took an active part in one way or another, either helping in the production or distri- bution of the book. It was almost a daily occurrence to find several members gathered in the panel room, mounting pictures, setting up copy, making write- ups, setting up ads, or doing any one of various and sundry duties connected with the yearbook publication. Under the capable leadership of Mary Lou Irey and Barbara Ferren, co- editors, the group worked towards the goal of a larger, better book, with a variety of pictures, depicting various phases of school life on the campus, on the athletic field, and in the classrooms. It indicated that we could compete against major Class A high schools, since we performed so well against Lincoln. This was a building year for South and as a result we have twelve lettermen return- ing. The only two regulars from last year were the co-captains, Cush and Baroni, but the team did very well considering their lack of experience. iii ROW 1: W. Moorehead, B. Woodlock, D. Harris, R. Adding to this year's team was the return of jack Ecrement. Coach Ash says that he is one of the finest gentlemen he has ever coached and he was a splendid influence on the team. This year's team had a wonderful spirit and won 9 out of its last 10 games. All but one of the first five will be returning next year, so next year's team holds a lot of promise to Coach Ash. In addition, Ed White, a former letterman, has returned to South. Basketball players from all gym classes formed two teams which spent after-school hours practicing for their play-off game. This year the Gray team came out on top, 35-27, but the Reds are planning to even up the score in years to come, as we hope that this will become an annual event for our sports-loving girls.
