They have given us memories which we shall never forget. They are an inspiration to the future, Building the morale of students, and helping them to be good citizens, and to face the problems of tomorrow. They mean much to Canton High School. With sincere respect, with the love and gratitude that are so rightfully theirs, We, the Class of 1954, dedicate this edition of THE MINNEQUAN, to our Faculty. Bachman. The Student Council is a governing body made up of class and homeroom represent- atives from each grade of the high school. The Council has made great progress this year. Our biggest project is getting all the senior football, basketball, and baseball players a sweater. We raise our money by having bake sales, tag days, and dances. Some of the entertainment we sponsor for Canton High is twirp season, all-school dances once a month, the purchase of records, and the sponsoring of noon movies. The Council also feeds two of the visiting teams, together with the Canton teams, coaches, cheerleaders, scorekeepers, and tirnekeepers. They eat cafeteria style. The Canton High School Council is cooperative and hard working. Much credit should be given to this group under the direction of Mr. Holcomb. OFF IC ERS President . . . The lights slowly dim and the curtain rises in Act I. Scene I The time is the fall of 1942. As the scene opens you see a group of bewildered but eager children embark on the road of learning. This is the future class of Our grade school days are filled with happy childhood memories. Scene II The second scene is another of bewildered but somewhat older actors and actresses. This again is us as we start the seventh grade in the high school build- ing. After learning the whereabouts and the why-fores and getting acquainted with the many new faces we settle down a little and elect Mr. Harry Johnson as our class sponsor. The rest of this scene passes rather uneventfully. Scene Ill This is a very short scene, but one of importance to us because in this we elect Miss Ethel Moser as our class sponsor and she keeps this position during the remaining five years of our high school days. ACT II Scene I You now see us entering our freshman year. We think we are really quite sophisticated until we get knocked down a peg or two by the mighty sophomores at our initiation. The scene is really one of the high lights of the play. The sophs put us through some hectic antics but fete us with a reception later. At the close of this scene you see a group from this class having a panel discussion for our parents on career night. Scene II We are now seen taking our revenge on the poor freshmen for the things that had been done to us the previous year. We are in senior high school and many of us actors and actresses join the many activities offered us. Tom Pepper stars in the scene, being elected class president. A group of sophomores in the Dramatic Club presented to the school a delightful comedy Antic Spring which takes place at the end of the scene. Act III Scene I Hurry, Hurry! Get your magazines from the juniors. You see us starting our junior year with a bang by selling a large amount of magazines during our two weeks' campaign. Barbara Thomas starred as class president in this scene. Near the end we see plays within the play which is now being presented to YOU--OUI Jtuiior plays 'Opening Night, The Marriage of Pierrot, and The Brave Shall Serve. Then comes preparations for our Junior Prom 'Moonlight and Roses where you see many of us working hard, but having a good time, getting ready for it with the aid of Mr. Charles Schlappi. Finally comes the wonderful night when we dance to the strains of Johnny Nicolosi's orchestra. Scene Il The final act shows us as mighty seniors with Stuart Slingerland taking the lead as class president. This is the busiest but one of the happiest of our school years. Work on the yearbook starts shortly after we begin the fall term and we are kept busy with this until January. We take time out from this for our senior play, Annie Get Your Gun, and with our thanks to Mrs. Hurley we put on one of the most delightful, entertaining plays ever presented before at C. H. S. Shortly after, you see a group attending career night at Williamsport High School. After the Christmas vacation came our senior class party which was a gala affair. The operetta, getting measured for caps and gowns, election of May Queen and Laurel Festival representative, our senior trip to New York, Baccalaureate, and finally Commencement bring to a close the happy, yes even sad, but certainly the most unforgettable stage of our lives. As the curtain falls on this class of 1954 you see us leaving the gymnasium clad in our caps and gowns, a little wiser, a little more grown upg many still uncertain as to where they are going from here. This year's membership is 50--boys who are striving to become leaders and future farmers of our community. Each year boys enter their project books in the County and State project contest. Robert Barrow and Tom Pepper placed first and third respectively in the county dairy contest, Romaine Sechrist first in the chick project, Robert Spencer second in the laying hen contest, Jim Beers third in dairy calves. In the state project contest Robert Barrow won a Gold Medal for his dairy herd and Romaine Sechrist won a bronze medal for his chick project. Paul Brackman was elected reporter of the County Association of Future Farmers of America. The following boys received the Bradford Area Farmer Degree and the Keystone Farmer Degree, one of the highest F.F. A. degrees: Robert Barrow, Paul Brackman, Dale Metzger, Tom Pepper, and Charles Wright. Herbert Chamberlain also received the Bradford Area Farmer Degree. The activities sponsored by the F.F. A. included: Halloween party, vermin contest, basket- ball team, concession at Football games, recreation nights, game supper, and the Father and Son Banquet. 1, FPKRM RS Gr fx FUTURE . tfriii OFFICERS President ---- Romaine Sechrist Vice President - - P21111 Brackman Secretary ---- - Robert Spencer Treasurer - - - - - Frank Landon Sentinel - - - - - Thomas Pepper Reporter - - - ------ Mike Collins Advisors - - - - - Mr. Hess, Mr. Zeigler Piling it on. FOOTBALL CHAMPS The 1953 Canton Warriors ended a successful season, winning the West Branch League title for the first time in 16 years, with a 5-1-0 record. Under the brilliant coaching of Robert Bowman, assisted by Harold Stack- house and James Arnold, the boys finished with an overall record of 6 wins, 2 ties, and 2 losses. The team played their most important game at Montgomery, Canton's rival for the championship. After a hard muddy afternoon, the game ended in a scoreless tie. The next week playing their best game at Towanda under the lights, they defeated the Black Knights 26 to 0. The worst defeat was suffered at South Williamsport in the cold of the season's worst snow storm. The team was led by captain, Eddie Keiffer, a senior fullback. This was Eddie's fourth year on the varsity and perhaps his greatest. He did most of the team's punting and passing, with Mason Mach- mer, a senior end, as his favorite pass receiver. FOOTBALL The Junior Varsity Football team, under the leadership of Mr. James Arnold, completed five games this season--two with Towanda, two with Troy and one with Sayre. They began the season with a game at Troy, and were defeated 19 to 0, The following game at Towanda ended victoriously 19 to O, The remaining three games were played on the home field where they lost to Troy 'l to 0, to Towanda 21 to 6, and ending the season with a 15 to 0 defeat by Sayre. The future stars now appear to be small and light, but they possess the aggressiveness every good team needs. With a little extra weight, these boys will follow in the footsteps of this year's varsity with proudness and determination. Good Luck to the Future West Branch Champions, VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Clockwise: Winifred Machmer, Betty Kerrick, Linda McConnell, Beverly Crandall, Carlene Stanley, Helen Grace, Susan VanDyke Necessary for a successful athletic year is the cooperation and enthusiasm of the entire student body, which was brilliantly led this year in both varsity and junior vars- ity events by our fine and spirited cheerleading squads. The varsity cheerleaders, led by co-captains Linda McConnell and Winifred Machmer, expressed great enthusiasm and helpful encouragement to the various Warrior teams. The Junior varsity cheer- leaders were as eagerly leading their teams to fine g8l'I1CS- These groups also cooperated in a very successful Haddad Tag Day and various school dances and pep meetings. Lacking the height possessed by the opponents, the boys were forced to depend upon speed and brilliant shooting. With five players remaining from last year's varsity, Paul Brackman, Mason Machmer, Eddie Keiffer, Stan Shadduck, and Champ Deets, the boys began the season. After being defeated in their first major starts they came back to defeat Towanda in a thrilling close and fast game before a packed gymnasium at Towanda. This game was the highlight of the first half season. The second half began with Sayre playing at Canton. Although Canton lost, this was a close, hard- played game throughout Stan Shadduck was team high scorer and among the top scorers in the league. The players mentioned above, plus Jim Seeley will be missed in the basketball year to come, but their places will be capably filled by the returning underclassmen.
