Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens . .. were not the first things to come to mind when seniors were asked, What is your favorite memory about school? Seniors responded in a variety of ways, from being with friends to having to clean the bathroom walls. One memory cherished the most is concerts and Marching Band. Or maybe the favorite memory is parties in the park. Even mysteries such a MoMo the monster to the eggnapping of Baby Eddie may bring about favorite memories. Perhaps the most wide-spread that brings a smile is the notorious 'skunk in the shop' event, where an unsuspecting kitty was tossed from the shop without mishap or misfire. The Pizza Hut Inc.-sponsored reading program has students reading like mad. Each student reading three books in a given month received an individual award of a pizza for that month. Classes reading their quota for at least four months of the five month program will receive a pizza party. Our thanks goes out to our local Pizza Hut and the manager, Marty Dochterman. They took special care to make the Canton R-V Pizza Hut program a success. It all started with funds raised by the community. Parents and friends raised most of the money and the School Board added the extra amount needed for the equipment. Kiwanis members and the summer maintenance crew helped assemble the equipment and put it in place. Plans are on the drawing board for benches, shrubbery, and even a water fountain. These additions to the landscaping are planned to increase the attractiveness and enjoyment of the playground. Quite a bit of money and hard work went into this project. And the children of our community will tell you it was well worth it! Below: Coach Newton showing Terrence Orange how to dive. During two weeks in February, soup labels were collected to purchase equipment for school. Students, with the volunteer help of parents, brought in a total of 12,000 labels this year. Names were drawn to award prizes for those who participated. Playground equipment such as kick balls and volleyballs, classroom equipment, and computer software are the targeted products to be bought with this year's mountain of labels. These products are meant for everyone's use and enjoyment. 41 Troy Baker Adam Bevans Erie Branham Candice Briscoe DeAnne Briscoe Christina Brooks Bentley Bunch J. R. Each week, the Kindergarteners learn about one of the letters of the alphabet. They do this by associating the letter with things that start with that letter for the week. This year, Bear Day was held on October 1st, which was the beginning of B week. This tradition has proved an enjoyable learning experience for the Big K and a lot of fun for the Seniors. It seems as though years are spent studying for good grades to please parents and qualify for college scholarships. How about those endless hours of practice to be a good athlete or musician? And then there's peer pressure... Luckily, in the midst of all this, students' humor shines through. Here are some answers to the question, how do you get on a teachers' good side? Give them food. Tell them you love them. Pass them up when you have another fund-raiser to sell. Be their slave or go-fer. Give them a Salary Compensation, you know.. .a bribe. It's been one of those days! The Tigers competed in Ft. Madison, Iowa's Octoberfest celebration on Oct. 4. The band walked away with first place and The People's Choice award. Our Marching Tigers departed at 4 a.m. and traveled to Columbia for UM's homecoming parade. CHS again won first place in the 1A division on Oct. 11. The Marching Tigers performed as the host band for Culver-Stockton's homecoming on Oct. 18. It was exciting being able to perform for our home town fans. The 100th year celebration of the Veterans Home in Quincy allowed the senior band another opportunity to perform before a large crowd. The band performed in one other parade. The Hannibal Mark Twain Festival on Oct. 28. There was also a night concert at which the Marching Tigers performed. WE ARE ALL PROUD OF THE BAND! 70 Congratulations from the Yearbook Staff! 71 72 Computers have become quite useful at Canton R-V. Elementary students, jr. high students, high school students, teachers, and administrators have put the computers to work. And... Bit By Bit It Rll Adds Up. Learning to use a computer isn't always easy though. Sometimes a computer can be quite imposing. With all the things to remember, one can easily be frustrated; especially when the manual seems larger than the computer itself. But most people who try the computers end up hooked. Computers can be a very versatile tool when used with various commercial programs. Teachers and administrators use the computers for record keeping, as test generators, and as teaching tools in a variety of ways. Older students use the computer for many different reasons also. The computer can be used to write book reports, chart graphs for a math project, or calculate formulas for a science project. And with the right program graphics can be produced like those used in television and cinema. Younger students use the computers too. A computer can be used to help learn typing skills, observation skills, problem solving skills, even your ABC's. Most programs for the lower grade levels are in the form of learning games, which add interest to the current lesson. With all the uses for computers, they have become very popular as both a tool and a pastime. And the computer's potential in the future will substantiate its popularity and value. 74 75 Seniors Wed by Denise Lillard The home economics room was the setting October 1 for the wedding of seniors Jeff Wright and Denise Lillard. Aaron Petefish performed the ceremony at 12:00 p.m., with music by flutist, Miss Beth Wiltshire. Miss Kelly Dunn served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Connie Long and Miss Belinda Breeden. Mark Hoewing was best man. Groomsmen were Jon Rudicil and Daryl Sherwood. The bride was given in marriage by her loving parents, Mr. and Mrs. Randy Lillard. The bride wore a floor length gown of silk organza featuring a bodice of sculptured Venice lace with a square neckline and short sleeves, and she carried an arrangement of multicolored crepe paper flowers. After the ceremony, a reception, consisting of a beautifully decorated cake, nuts, and Kool-aid, were served. The newly married couple would like to thank the senior home economics class and Mrs. Howe for making their wedding day special and the bride's parents, Randy and Angie, for taking care of the wedding expenses. mmm mi Above left: Fair progress. I'm sure this has happened to all of us at some time or another, and it makes us angry and hurt. We Feel like our friends are being rude and if they had any respect for us at all they would have at least given us their attention for a few minutes so we could tell our story. With this picture in mind, have you thought how teachers feel when we as students don't listen to them during class as they attempt to explain our assignment and as they conduct class? Recently I have notice how rude and disrespectful we, as students, can be in class. I have some really great teachers, we all do, ones that really care about us, not only as students but as people. I like attending these teachers' classes because they have relaxed atmospheres. The reason they are relaxed is because these teachers have given us the respect and trust that we as students want. They trust and expect us to behave properly without having to use much discipline. Of course we like this freedom, but at the same time we take advantage of it, and this sets off a chain of reactions. We begin by acting rude and obnoxious in their classes, which, of course, bothers them. Then they start getting on our cases which makes us mad and we wonder what THEIR problem is (Why are they taking it out on us?) Actually the problem isn't theirs, it's ours; we are the ones setting them off. I, for one, can imagine how discouraging it is for teachers when their students don’t seem to care about class or try to understand the work discussed, when they don't do their homework on time of study for tests. (After all, how many of our teachers give us study sheets or tell us exactly what to know on which day? Most of them, I'd say.) Teachers are not bad people; they are just as human as you and I. They have feelings, too, and sometimes we as students forget that. Who knows, you might find out they can be more than just teachers, they cam be friends. HIGH TRACK Practicing For You've heard it before. . . No pain no gain, or practice makes perfect. Yet where would we be without practicing. The Marching Tigers certainly wouldn't have received the Peoples' Choice Award without practice. And there wouldn't have been any winning seasons, not to mention first or second place in District Tourneys. There’s just something about being part of a team and going for the glory that makes practicing well worth it in the end. And Tigers, you've got what it takes.
