A small school located in a little town in northeast Missouri, “the center of the universe.” A unique school that pulls together to become one. Our close knit family of students and faculty can be compared to many separate and individual checkers. Yet we are also like a checkerboard where everyone fits into a specific place. We stood by each other, cried and laughed together, even fought with one another. But the checkerboard pattern always fell into order again. Everyone side by side, hand in hand. Checks consumed our lives — The fall fashions were full of checkered patterns; if you overslept you had to check into school; when the fire siren blared, everyone had to check out the fire trucks destination, and of course, on Tuesdays and Thursdays you had to check out of the new detention hall after serving your time. Everyone was saving their receipts when they checked out of Niemann’s, John’s Saving Center. Ayerco and Ken’s Saving Center. These receipts helped raise money for the new Marching Tiger band uniforms and for new playground equipment. It seemed like all roads led to “Checking it out!” In our hearts we will remember those bittersweet memories that will last a lifetime. Induction The fall induction of new National Honor Society members began with a welcome by chapter president Keri Kenney. She also gave an explanation of the organization and its goals. Candles representing scholarship, service, leadership and character were lit from a larger candle called the Torch of Knowledge. Brief passages on the forementioned were recited by senior members after they each lit a candle. The short initiation ceremony ended when the inductees lit their candles from the Torch of Knowledge. They also received N.H.S. pins, membership certificates and a yellow rosebud. Participation by all N.H.S. members in service projects is a requirement for the maintenance of a Canton chapter. Members are chosen by a faculty committee on the basis of students’ grade point average, leadership and citizenship qualities. Only juniors and seniors are eligible for induction, either in the spring or fall. An informal spring induction brought three new members into N.H.S., seniors Jenny Eisenbeiss and Patti Mathieson and junior John Ludwig. by Linda Taylor Cheerful Keri Kenney assists with refreshments. Candle lighting is a symbolic moment for Denise Lillard, Betty Jo Uhlmeyer, Linda Taylor, Beth Uhlmeyer, Wendy Wilson, Keri Kenney and Aaron Petefish. 56 Student Life Inductees Britta Wright, Beth Wiltshire and Shelly Stout relax immediately following the ceremony. Prankish Betty Jo Uhlmeyer adds a touch of decoration to her date, Shawn Graves. Sadie Hawkins Shindig Coach Newton and his wife, Donna, join in the evening’s festivities. Boogie Down! Pam McCarty, Fid Murphy, Arinda Axton and Wes Davis dance the night away. Sarah Hawkins was afraid her daughter, Sadie, would die an old maid because she had never been asked to any community dances. Sarah declared “Leap Year Day” to be Sadie Hawkins Day. This enabled single women to ask bachelors to be their escorts for the day. These men would also accompany the ladies to a dance later in the evening. Sadie Hawkins Day was a success. Three weddings took place in the following year as a result of this new holiday. One of the weddings was Sadie’s. Recreating a similar setting, Student Council members transformed the old gym into a barnlike setting on October 25. For the most part, the tradition continued. Assertive females requested the presence of the available man of their choice to be their escort for the Student Council sponsored dance. The response from the 170 plus students was positive. The crowds’ reaction and toe-tapping music provided by The Rising Suns made the first casual dance of the year a success. by Linda Taylor Student Life 57 Cool Ramona Kaylor joins in many of the pep band’s zany antics. I think he’s going to pass out!” A few moments later, senior Rod Ward looked up with a pale face and quietly added, “I don’t feel so good.” Rod, along with 15-20 other CHS students, donated blood at the annual Red Cross Blood Drive. The drive was held on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Culver-Stockton College student union. Shortly following their arrival, donors signed in and were given a series of quick and easy blood tests administered by registered nurses. These tests were used to detect potential blood deficiencies and diseases. Body temperature and blood pressure were also recorded. One pint of precious blood later, all volunteers were treated to refreshments of cookies, pretzels and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in order to restore lost energy and nutrients. Each person was also required to remain stationary for fifteen minutes while nurses monitored them for negative reactions to the loss of blood. Each year, millions of lives are saved due to the efforts of those who contribute so generously to the Red Cross blood drives. Hats off to our group of CHS volunteers! by Joe Bridgeman Inquisitive Bob Foust keeps an eye on the blood pressure gauge. Student Life 61 History Fair On Feb. 22 the Social Studies department held a history fair in the old gym. Students in grades 7-12 prepared entries during the first semester for either the junior division (grades 7-8) or the senior division (grades 9-10). This year’s theme was Compromise and Conflict. Topics ranged from world wars to rock ’n roll and the Fifth Amendment. The fair was held in order to qualify students for the National History Day Contest which was sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Winners of the local fair proceeded to district competition in March at Northeast Missouri State University. Those who placed at NMSU participated in state competition in April. Our school and community were honored by the success of junior high students Matt Ward, Robbie Toops, Chad Porter and Ryan Kuhlman. These young historians joined forces and developed a seven minute multi-media presentation about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Did they all dream the same thing? Well, actually, it wasn't a dream at all. “These Dreams” was the theme for the Junior High’s Spring Dance that took place from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. and was sponsored by the Junior High Student Council. The little gym was decorated with multi-colored streamers, tables and chairs were set up, and a special area, complete with a love seat, was reserved for the Prince and Princess and their attendants. The “Sound Town” music machine officially started the dance with the song, “These Dreams” by Heart. Cake and punch were served, and at 9 p.m., the Prince and Princess and their attendants were announced Attendants of the Court were Curt Thompson and Angie Oliver, Eric Hinton and Brenda Wright, Jay Kaylor and Erika Newberry, Danny Blakely and Sarah Glasgow, Robby Toops and Gail Collins and John Kaylor and Teresa Smith. This year’s theme was the height of casual fashion, following the tropical dress code (Hawaiian shirts, Hawaiian shorts, etc.). In preparation of the evening’s shew, the students worked hard in order to finish their outfits on time. During the show over 30 students participated Besides the Hawaiian style of clothing modeled, there were fancy dresses and prom for-mals, casual slacks, skirts, and tops. The halftime entertainment consisted of the Sixth Grade Ensemble, which performed several numbers. Tropical Fashions was a big success, and all the people who decorated, performed, announced, did spotlights, played the piano, as well as the teachers and the audience, are thanked for helping make the style show an even bigger success. 74 Student Life Student Life 75 One More Night by Denise I .ilia rd Banquet for the junior-senior classes began at 6:30 p.m. at the Golden Eagle Riverboat. The dance began at 9 p.m. in the elementary gymnasium. The theme of the prom was “One More Night.” As each couple entered the gym they walked over a bridge covered with blue cracked ice, then was able to see what the gym had been transformed into. The room was decorated in blue and silver. Murals that represented the sky hung on the walls ana streamers hung below them. Right across the gym from the stage was a big arch covered with balloons. In the middle of the dance area stood a star staircase. As a couple looked toward the ceiling, they saw strips of gosner and streamers waving across. In the background, music of all kinds blasted; smoke and bubbles surrounded the sound. 76 Student Life Court K_H THIRD ATTENDANTS: Joe Bridgeman, Stacey Zahn. The day long field trip took the group to the art museum where they saw a number of original paintings, drawings, and sculptures; while there, the gang sifted through the crowded art shop, a small gift store on the premises. After a lovely lunch at the museum restaurant, the group walked to the St. Louis Zoo to view the animals. Most of the animals accommodated the group’s photographers with lively, fun poses. At 3:30 the group re-met and returned to the bus for the three hour trip home. Despite the clouds and partially rainy day, the group decided the trip was certainly worth the time spent. 78 Student Life Student Life 79 Fond Farewell This page is dedicated to the honor of Ruth Schryver who retired upon the completion of this school year. She has been an employee of Canton R-V Schools for twenty-four years. Prior to this period, Mrs. Schryver taught for eight years in Iowa communities. As a junior high English teacher, she has contributed countless hours of instruction to the growth of young students. Her years of dedicated service have been greatly appreciated by students and faculty alike. Hitting It Off Great! Anxious softball and baseball players nervously popped their bubble gum as they started off the season at the plate with a full count. The guys had to overcome some empty positions from last year and the girls were introduced to the new coach, Sandy Moore. As the first meetings came to a close, no one felt like a stranger anymore. Empty positions were soon filled and both teams began to hit it off great. This year’s softball-baseball season went exceptionally well. With hard work and the desire to win, the teams reached high up in an attempt to grab their goals. Despite the long, hot, dusty practices and games, the teams experienced a great amount of fun. In the course of events, new skills and techniques were developed. Looking at the stats, one may not think the season was too successful. However, in their own minds, the guys and gals all felt as a team that making friends and being proud of themselves allowed them to achieve a successful season while hitting it off great! by Sheila Van Tress 82 Sports I Sports 83 Basketball CANTON VARSITY BOYS CHS OPP 58 Mark Twain 64 62 Marion Co. 74 39 Palmyra 74 50 Highland 90 46 Scotland Co. 65 65 Mark Twain 62 57 West Pike 79 53 Clark Co. 79 47 Marion Co. 62 43 Unity 63 36 Payson 84 67 Brashear 56 54 Schuyler Co. 61 53 Highland 85 49 Clark Co. 65 62 Scotland Co. 76 Monroe City Tournament 40 Monroe City 96 75 Van-Far 66 52 South Shelby 50 Highland Tournament 48 Highland 75 55 Scotland Co. 82 Palmyra Tournament 47 Clark Co. 70 67 Mark Twain 54 44 Marion Co. 58 District Tournament 72 Atlanta 65 63 Wyaconda 65 84 Sports Basketball CANTON VARSITY GIRLS CHS OPP 52 Mark Twain 57 45 Marion Co. 56 34 Palmyra 88 58 South Shelby 59 58 Van-Far 35 42 Marion Co. 51 42 Scotland Co. 52 49 Mark Twain 61 34 Highland 74 49 Bowling Green 61 61 West Pike, 111. 57 47 Highland 67 49 Clark Co. 60 32 Clark Co. 73 56 Mark Twain 57 47 Marion Co. 45 47 Hamilton, 111. 58 46 Unity, 111. 54 45 Pay son, 111. 33 46 Brashear 31 44 Schuyler Co. 53 36 Clark Co. 60 58 Scotland Co. 35 61 Wyaconda 57 34 LaPlata 39 Sports 85 CHS Jr. High Boys B-Team OPP 35 Scotland Co. 20 31 Luray 24 33 Kirks ville 21 15 Highland 26 24 Wyaconda Tournament Marion Co. 43 30 Luray 20 86 Sports Basketball JR.
