1983 Flash Canton R-V Schools Volume 48 200 S. Fourth Street Canton, Missouri 63435 Right Down Our Alley 1 Health-minded students Greg Leftwich, Jack Combs and Jane Moore nonchalantly receive immunization shots in conjunction with state regulations. Undulating streamers brighten the Spring Festival performances of second graders Erin Cooper, Scotty Gorrell and Johnny Janes. Raucous humor draws attention to Tracy Job, Tony Job, Jeff Tobin and Steve Baker during an afternoon pep assembly. Warm October sunlight relaxes Eric Bracey and Robin Smith after a lengthy march in the Mizzou Homecoming parade. Long-limbed Kevin Dodd calmly maintains order among the kindergarten participants of the Spring Festival. 2 Right Down Our Alley Contents Student Life 5 People 25 Faculty, Staff, Administration 63 Elementary 69 Organizations 89 Sports 101 Advertisements 117 Science guinea pig Kelly Dopheide erupts with laughter as electricity is transmitted through her to Bobby Foust’s hair. Right Down Our Alley 3 Absorbed in thought, Anne Fryer investigates after school activities in the old gym. Right Down Our Alley Alleys, to some folks, are nothing more than quiet passageways bordered by dull buildings, overflowing garbage pails and snarling canine. These thoroughfares, however, if studied by a curious observer, harbor delightful and sometimes unusual surprises. The conglomeration of odds and ends can create an alley with a totally unique personality. So it is with our school. At a first glance, we may appear to be one of many typical, small-town schools, but given a scrutinizing look, our student body, faculty, staff and administration maintain a flavorful identity of their own. The variety of people, events and experiences are the colorful “odds and ends” which make for interesting times “Right Down Our Alley”. Band students Joe Eisenbeiss and Robbie Zahn consider activities at the Mizzou Homecoming game. Assistance from Jennifer Ellison frees Jon Morris to continue in a pep assembly relay race. King Fool Bobby Foust humbly receives his Chinese victuals from servant Valorie Bridgeman. Perched at an assembly, seventh graders Debbie Davis, Rene Sherwood and Wendy Brown conceal their mischief from the faculty’s ever watchful eye. 4 Right Down Our Alloy Another year, another — Crazy Day Baglady Valorie Bridgeman shuffles enroute to her first hour class. Sultry Scott Bridgeman draws double-takes from Miss Gladbach and Mrs. McBride. Onlookers Mrs. Stow, Jennifer Brown and Patti Mathieson gawk at Matt Berry’s new look. The arrival of outrageous get-ups captivates the attention of Brian Pearl, Robbie Zahn, Doug Smith, Matt Berry and Jeff Van Tress. Mr. Harmon uses his theatrical talents to blend with the student body. 6 Student Life =Homecoming Court= FRONT ROW: Freshman Attendants-Dick Horner and Stacey Zahn, Sophomore Attendants-Tracy Job and Tina Owsley, Junior Attendants-Lynn Thompson and Tonya Voss. Student Life 7 jmsmL Student Life 9 Outrageous =Entertainment Special afternoon assemblies are favorite events at CHS. They are a welcome break from the routine of classes and a time to relax with friends. They also provide outrageous and sometimes embarrassing entertainment. Many good natured participants have endured dry crackers, cold water, bath towels, bananas, chocolate ice cream and tricycles for the sake of promoting school spirit. Attempting to drop a scoop of ice cream approximately three feet into a cone held in someone’s mouth is a difficult task. Sophomore Tina Owsley, having missed her target, spontaneously smooshes Coach Kaiser’s face with chocolate ammunition! Uninhibited basketball athletes Jeff Van Tress, Bruce Dade, Bruce Hoffman, Brian Pearl and Matt Berry artistically lead a spelling cheer. Principal Christine Crawford receives her fair share of melting ice cream from Coaches Rene Kellermann and Paul Kaiser. 10 Student Life Promenading through the gym, varsity basketball players Kevin Dodd, Bruce Dade and Jeff Van Tress begin a burlesque-like act. Humbled Coach Kellermann obediently waits for another splat of cold ice cream. Incognito cheerleading squads victimized Greg Pearl with a splash of warm water. Student Life 11 Parading through the streets in colorful pajamas and flowing bathrobes is not a typical marching drill, but the award-winning Marching Tigers and their director, Bill Berry, are far from typical. Sleepy-eyed residents and businessmen just arriving to work were surely astounded by the outlandish sight of ninety-six, pajama-clad (and totally serious!) band students polishing their marching skills. This zany, early morning practice preceded the N.M.S.U. Homecoming parade in Kirksville on October 9. The prideful Tigers fared well with a I rating and a second place in overall competition. 12 Student Life Games— _____ Up With People Volleyball is an exciting sport, especially when one of the opponents is a world-renowned group of musical performers. During the latter part of March, the city of Canton hosted one of the five Up With People cast. The three day sojourn for the group included a costume banquet at the Golden Eagle Showboat, a full house concert in the Alexander Campbell Auditorium, and an invitation to compete in a volleyball contest with selected CHS juniors and seniors. Students and faculty filled the bleachers to view the action-packed games. The junior team emerged victorious and Canton High thoroughly enjoyed the community outreach of the energetic Up With People cast. Student Life 13 FRONT ROW: Mandye Masden and Andy Upchurch. A moment of reprieve provides adequate rest for Kellie Rich and Jane Moore. Youthful photos accenfHHMHi =Junior-Senior Prom Once again, the crusty Old Gym was amazingly transformed into a charming setting for the Junior-Senior Prom. Blue metalic streamers were draped to form a mock ceiling and masterful ingenuity created a cascading waterfall. The theme, “Through The Years”, was highlighted by a display of individual infant or toddler photographs of each senior class member. The pictures had been secretly enlarged, matted and strategically hung on the walls. These youthful images added a surprisingly delightful accent to the atmosphere. As always, the evening was a tremendous success. Prior to coronation, final instructions are given to Penny Otte, Mary Ann McDermott and fellow court candidates. Student Life 15 Home Ec students create Spring= = =Sensations A newly stitched spring ensemble, created and modeled by Kim L. Uhlmeyer, takes the spotlight. Quick peeks from backstage ensure Cheryl Jett and Robin Smith that all is going well. On the ramp, Penny Otte and niece model the latest in ruffled fashions, both denim and lace. 16 Student Life Roll up your sleave and say— --------------Ouch!-------------------- If E.T. were a CHS student, he would have busily healed sore arms with his magical touch. Much to the dismay of trembling students, ages six to 18, February hosted the annual immunization clinic sponsored by the Lewis County Health Department. State law requires each student be immunized for DPT, measles, rubella and mumps before he or she can legally attend school. Students may choose to be injected by a private physician, or with parent’s consent, receive shots during the clinic. A select few transcended this discomfort while others winced, contorted and reflected sheer pangs of anguish with each jab of the villainous hypo. Reactions varied as student bodies endured close encounters of a pointed kind. Mock grimaces by Chris Holmes and Matt Berry relieve tension for soon-to-be shot recipients Brenda Smith and Jane Moore. Squimish apprehension by Lisa Roach does not stop Doug Lillard from cheerfully receiving an injection. Aghast by the lengthy needle, Kevin Baker hesitantly prepares to undergo his immunization. The computer room became a hub of activity as interested students responded enthusiastically to the PETs. Further course development will channel more energies in this area of instruction. Student Life 19 Record setting stamina produces■ —3,053 Situps!— Executing situps in a crowded school cafeteria is not a new form of peculiar punishment for misbehavior. However, had a stranger moseyed through the lunchroom December 22, he may have thought otherwise. With his feet securely taped to a mat-covered table, freshman Todd Campbell began his successful attempt to reach 3,000 situps within a 90 minute period. Eight weeks of faithful training paid off as this slender young man exhibited little strain during the record-setting event. As fourth hour drew to an end, Coach Kaiser indicated that Todd has passed the 3,000 mark and was determined to continue. Students, faculty and cooks alike gazed in amazement and began intermittent cheers of praise and encouragement. Touching his elbows to his knees 3,053 times, Campbell completed a herculean feat, earning the respect and admiration of persons at CHS. Fourth shift lunchers Dan Smith, Johnny Weathers, Tony Dye and Drew Wilson nonchalantly carry on as Todd continues his efforts. 20 Student Life Monsieur Chris Holmes Herb McClaughry, Mrs. Crawford and Randa Harbourn Stacey Zahn —Hams!— One of the more amusing aspects of life down our alley is the wonderful folks who send us catipulting into snickers, snorts, chuckles and down right fits of laughter. These characters may disguise themselves as star-studded celebrities such as Santa Claus, mimic obscure personalities as Dr. Doolittle’s eccentric sister, or just act plain strange. Beginning in the fall, the class co-adjoined for the annual fruit sale, which provided additional monies for their spring trip. The week of October 22 lent the class time to sell the promised victuals and produce a productive total of $2,200.00 worth of ambrosian orders. Hundreds of boxes and mesh sacks full of oranges, grapefruit, apples, pears and a few nuts arrived from Wetterau Foods of Mexico, Mo. The fruit decorated the old gym December 19, 20, and 21 while class officers and sponsors dished out appropriate orders for delivery. The distribution time was hectic as students excused from class loaded their vehicles and began the lengthy task of diminishing the mountains of fruit. Effortlessly positioning a box of grapefruit, Gail Hudnut makes room for more fruit. Team effort by Bruce Hoffman and Jennifer Ellison quickly fills an empty truck bed. Whether it be corralling large classes of elementary pupils, delivering money to the bank, bandaging scraped knees, or answering the phone, their jobs assist teachers and secretaries by saving precious time. For some, this opportunity provides an initial working situation with children. Spring Music Festival Annually, dedicated elementary students of all ages spend numerous hours in preparation for the Spring Music Festival. Lively songs, both vocal and instrumental, are memorized and religiously practiced. Children loyally polished their skills in anticipation of this grandiose occasion. Under the devoted leadership of Barb McSpadden, this year’s performance was a tremendous success. Parents, relatives and teachers packed the gymnasium bleachers March 24 to pridefully view some 300 wide-eyed, crisply dressed musicians. The crowd responded enthusiastically to a variety of musical selections. Brief dance routines, choruses, Orff instruments, recorders and bands were part of the youthful entertainment. A sense of satisfaction hovered in the gym with the end of the final melody. The evening’s endeavors had succeeded in being a delightful musical event. Rhythmic movement is coordinated by second grade ribbon twirlers. Jack Taylor, Sabina Des Vaux and fellow second graders relax following their ribbon dance. Constant counting keeps Meredith Cary in time as she accompanies her classmates on an Orff instrument. 70 Spring Festival First-time band performers Angela Dennison, Pam Schroeder, Nancy Williams and Sean Flanagan toot under the direction of Bill Berry. Concentration by Megan Dennison leads to a fine performance. Attentive Tiffany Lowe, Deanna Prather, Ginger Foust and Michael Hanson hold the final note of a song. Yards of black wood and strands of tissue paper prove to be a decorative media for art student Linda Taylor. 1983 harbored a delightful and sometimes saddening series of events and circumstances. Though our reactions varied, the influences of new experiences culminated in another unique school year. Our hearts, and the worlds’ were captured by a wide-eyed, wrinkled little critter named E. T. Moon Zappa promoted the outrageous Valley Girl image and her “like-totally gag me with a spoon” jargon infiltrated our speech patterns. Our well-liked superintendent resigned and a hesitant student body experienced reinstated final exams. Nacho chips and spicey, hot cheese dip appeared in the favorite lunch line, the Cardinals captured the pennant and to everyone’s confusion, the school building became flanked by another one-way street. The senior class sojourned in Kansas City, Mo., the shop received badly needed equipment, a student art exhibit accompanied the spring band concert, and the “old gaurd” moaned at the reappearance of the mini skirt! The colorful “odds and ends” of this year are countless. Some will be forgotten. Hopefully, many others will linger in our memories as we recall the variety of people, events and experiences that contributed to life RIGHT DOWN OUR ALLEY Winesome Steve Daughtry gleefully prepares to release his Balloon-o-gram.
