Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1979 volume:

Time goes on quickly during the school year. School opens in late August and it seems like hot weather will last forever as teachers and students suffer the sticky days in class and look forward to the cool crispness of Autumn. ABOVE: The Marching Tigers make a colorful showing at the annual Hannibal Band Day in the early fall. TOP RIGHT: The fall season brings some of the most colorful and vivid leaves in memory, set in lovely, bright blue days which linger on and on. The COVER sets the pace for the ’79 FLASH with the bright yellow and gold of an autumn tree on Lewis Street. MIDDLE RIGHT: October is so warm that Jack-O-Lantern carving can be done outside by the second graders and Mrs. Ann Parker. After a mild November and December, 1979’s Winter comes on the scene with a vengeance bringing deep snows, icicles and fierce winds, BOTTOM. Spring with its long dreamed-of warm sunny days, flowers and green grass finally arrives and blends into those “Almost-Summer” days of April when it’s so difficult to stay inside and concentrate! With graduation day comes the close of another cycle of school in May. It is the hope of the 78-79 FLASH Staff that in this volume the reader will find opportunities to pause and reflect.... . . . As Time Goes On e Around School 6 Seniors ’79 Diana Ayers Candy Angell Mark Baker LeAnn Bevans Leigh Ann Bishoff Beverly Brown Jill Caldwell Chris Campen Bob Childress Kim Clark Beverly Clay Tate Debbie Clay 7 The seniors of 1978-79 are shown ABOVE and RIGHT during the picture taking expedition to Lock Dam Number 20 during early September. The sixty students who began the year as seniors look as if they are certain that this will be the best senior class that ever was in the history of Canton R-V High School! Special photographer is one-time teacher Bill Lach whose photograph of the seniors appears on the end sheets. As seniors we look hack on the years that have past and reminisce. We remember the primary grades with Chinese jump ropes, clackers, chasing each other at recess, and having room mothers that planned super parties. We remember being excited about going into the Fifth Grade and changing classes every hour ... we felt just like we were almost in High School!” “Junior High was a big change. The teachers expected more of us as we began preparation and study to pass the test over the Constitution. We remember having class meetings for the very first time, going on a field trip to Hannibal to see Mark Twain’s “Stomping Ground.” Seventh grade also was the first time that the students from Canton and Williamstown were in classes together.” More changes came with our early high school years. The new gym and classroom complex were completed to start us off on the right foot for an exciting four years of being in Senior High. The Freshman year accustomed each of us to high school life and we got to know the upper-classmen better. During the Sophomore year we received our class pins and most of us went through the trauma of taking our DRIVER’S TEST! Highlight of our Sophomore year was the out-standing performance of the Varsity Girls Team as they nearly captured the Class 2A State Championship. School spirit was at a fever pitch as we followed the team across the state to cheer them on.” Class Officers And Sponsors LEFT: Kim Clark, President; Leigh Ann Bishoff, Vice President; Deanna Steinbeck, Secretary; Mike Stevenson, Sponsor; Bob Foster, Sponsor; Vancil Crandall, Sponsor; Jim English, Treasurer. “We knew we were almost there when we were Juniors! The class raised a record amount of money through the traditional magazine sale in the fall to sponsor the BEST Junior Senior Banquet and Prom ever! The theme of the prom was “Colour My World.” Class rings were a big landmark for us that year.” “Slowly, but surely, it came to be our turn to be SENIORS! At last, it was OUR YEAR! It was a terriffic moment when we first came to school in August of 1978 as members of the Graduating Class (HOPEFULLY) of 1979. With being a senior came decisions. Class meetings were held early in the year to discuss ways to raise money for the traditional Senior Trip. The most successful projects turned out to be a car wash, the concession stands and the fruit sales. While money was coming in to the class treasury, our personal funds were rapidly diminished through the purchase of senior announcements, pictures, albums and outlay for the Senior Trip and our caps and gowns. We thought it would never end.” “Seniors were participators as we led the school in team sports, activities and classes. We’ve seen girls go from white ankle socks and dresses to blue jeans and T-Shirts. Our interests have shifted and our world has widened. We realize that we are coming to both an end and a beginning and the words of the song COLOUR MY WORLD come to mind. We leave you with these thoughts.” THE FLASH STAFF' As time goes on, I realize Just what you mean To me, And now, Now that you’re near Promise your love That I’ve waited to share, And dream, Of our moments together Colour my world With hope of loving you. 16 As Time Goes On At Last! All good things must come to an end, or so some wise old head has said. As seniors practice for the real thing, which was on the evening of the 16th of May, a little nostalgia takes over. This is one of the last times they will be together. It is both an ending and a beginning, a bittersweet moment to be always remembered! In the elementary schools a “Career Corner” was established with books about different occupations and careers as well as different life roles, settings and events. The big thrust in the secondary was toward a Career Day. One entire day was devoted to career education. The students heard speakers, participated in career education activities and went on field trips. The most popular part of the day were the mini-sessions with speakers from different career fields.
