Underclassmen ....... Table Of Contents 2 Movin’ on up, in the shape of many changes, came during 1977-78. The school, the town, the county, even the nation felt changes during this time. With the opening of the school year came a new administration, and many new ways of thinking. The first changes were a six-hour day and a closed lunch hour for the elementary. Secondly, a stricter disciplinary policy was enforced, much to the students’ dismay. Even the weather was different. After a scorchingly hot summer and a non-existent fall, the area headed into a bone-chilling winter which lasted from Thanksgiving to Easter. The town felt change, too. This was the year for industry in Canton, which badly needed it. The Pizza Hut and the Golden Eagle Riverboat came to Canton during this time, and were welcomed with open arms. A cabinet factory also made tentative plans to locate. May 17th saw Capps Store, Killday’s Barber Shop, and the Masonic Hall burn. Lewis County is “Movin’ on Up” by beginning construction on a nursing home, and by completing the new four-lane Highway 61. Movin’ On Up 3 ’78 was a year with many familiar names in the headlines. The nation mourned the loss of Senator Hubert Humphrey, Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and Groucho Marx. The Bert Lance scandal was filled with suspense, and the Panama Canal treaties made the country wonder how the United States ever got involved down there. But it was a good year for the school. The transition was made from one administration to another, the bands did well in both the marching and concert seasons, all the teams had fine records, Student Council was very active, and school spirit was often in evidence. The elementary collected soup labels again and the junior high learned to cope with their “In-Between” status. As in any school, the name of the game is to keep “Movin’ on Up,” and the higher up on the ladder, the more responsibility must be undertaken. The Senior class of ’78 is “Movin’on Up,” and out to take their place as responsible adults in the world. An underclassman will say that it’s the year for goofing off and taking easy classes. A teacher says it’s a case of Senioritis, which becomes chronic near graduation. And the administration repeatedly mentions that Senior Skip Day is NOT a national holiday, and therefore the Seniors had better forget the whole idea, which of course never happens. But to find out the facts, where does a reporter go but to the source itself? The source being, of course, a Senior. So, a Senior was asked, “What is this year in your life all about?” “It’s a year of worries. To the underclassmen, it may seem easy, but take a closer look. Who do you see most often in the counselor’s office? We’re not there because we want to be, we’re there because we have to be. There are many difficult decisisons to be made. Are you going to work? For what kind of job are you qualified? How do you get a job interview? Are you going to college? Can your parents afford it? Fill out these financial aid forms, and here, fill out this application form, and oh, while you’re here, you may as well take this housing contract, and by the way ... It seems to go on forever.” Cathy Hoffman Lisa Johnson Barry Jones Kim Jones Maria Kirchner Linda Lay Brad Legg Steve Long Curt McCutchan 12 Rick Martin Keith Moore Lester Norton Dacyl Perez Tammy Porter Lora Roach Judy Scott Tony Shannon Annie Shaw Kevin Shirey Craig Spalding Linda Sparrow 13 New Beginning The Senior continues, “It’s a time to spend money. From the minute you got to school that first day as a Senior, you started spending it. Money for the ACT, SAT, or CLEP tests; for renting you cap and gown, and don’t forget your graduation announcements. Add this to expenses from the Prom and the Senior trip, and you’ve managed to spend quite a bundle. Last of all, it’s a year for breaking virtually any ties you may have. There are, of course, the more obvious ones, such as teachers and organizations. You also have the heart-breaking job of saying goodbye to many of your friends, many of whom you may not see again until a class reunion. Probably the hardest tie to break is the one you have with your family. Most people don’t realize it, but once you’re out on your own, whether it’s college, work, or marriage, you’re really never home again until you have a home of your own.” Hopefully, no one has been scared off by what’s written here. Admittedly, the Senior year is a hard one—there are new responsibilities and growing up overnight is an expected process. But there are also lots of good things. The Senior year is a major stepping stone from childhood to the begining of adult life. —A Senior 15 16 Jerry Spurgeon Norman Stewart Joni Stevenson Jeff Shuman Sharon Swartz Jere Taylor Robin Thirtyacre Jeanne Uhlmeyer Steve Uhlmeyer Kirk Walker Theresa Walker Steve Walker Dale Weilbrenner Sue Wright Toni Wright Classmates Stacy Brooks Chad Calhoun Chris Campen Bobby Childress Julie Creason Ron Hamilton 17 19 Williamstown playground after an early spring thaw. Their rationale for coping with life soon makes one wonder who is sane and who is not. They have found peace and contentment that is not found in the outside world. The inter-play between Mrs. Savage, the newest inmate, and the other residents, is a delight. These young actors you see tonight have developed their own characterizations for these difficult roles with a great deal of sensitivity. With each rehearsal and performance, I seem to get something new and beautiful from this play. I hope that you will too.” Stephanie Manaher Director Tiger Power 81 82 Boy’s Tennis And Golf Teams FRONT ROW: Skip Barton, John Roach. Varsity Girls Basketball The Canton Tigerette basketball team posted a 22-5 record for the 77-78 season. Highlights of the season were victories over Kirksville (twice), Unionville, Highland, and Hannibal. The Tigerettes took first place in the Palmyra Tourney for the second consecutive year with a 44-42 victory over Hannibal. They also placed second in the Scotland County Tourney and the Brashear Regional. The Tigerettes maintained a twelve game winning streak during the second half of the season before losing to North Shelby for the Regional Championship. The girls got off to a slow start, but came back to win against a previously defeated team. They also played two Varsity teams, beating one in an overtime. The 6-7 season was productive as a whole, and the girls, who will be next year’s Varsity squad, gained much valuable experience. Jr. Varsity Girls Freshmen Girls The girls, whose only loss was to North Shelby, Sophomores, posted a 9-1 record and won third place in the Knox County Tournament. Coach Jones expressed how hard the seven girls had worked, and also praised their attitude throughout the season. 94 Boys Varsity Basketball The 1977-78 Canton Tigers finished the season with a 10-16 record. The outstanding opponents in the area contributed to the greater number of losses for the Tiger cagers. The Tigers lost four overtime games by a total of 15 points. Wins over Macon, Van Far, and a close game with Highland added to a memorable season. Jr. Varsity Boys The 6-7 J.V. boys squad, showed great improvement as the year went along, with several of the players being moved up to Varsity. The playing experience gained by the team will benefit the Varsity squad next year. The Freshmen boys, who finished first in the Knox County Tournament, completed a fine season this year with an 11-1 record. Leading scorer was Todd Ellison, lead rebounder was Steve Logsdon, and Jeff Janney had the most assists. Coach Jones was highly pleased with the hard work and dedication displayed by all 13 members. Freshmen Boys 95 Softball The Canton girls Softball team made it to the state quarterfinals this year while achieving an 11-3 record. Coach Stevenson attributes solid defense and good hitting to the girl’s success. The team averaged 10 runs a game while allowing their opponents an average of only 4 runs per game. The Softball Tigerettes won half of their games by the 10 run rule. The highlight of the season was winning the district tournament, and proceeding to the state level. While losing four excellent Seniors, Coach Stevenson is optimistic about next year’s success. The Canton Cross Country team experienced a slow season, according to Coach Gieseke. In his opinion, the team was handicapped by a late start, poor organization and limited student interest. The season highlight centered around two young enthusiastic runners, Steve Clark and Charlie DeWitt, who ran their best in the Troy Invitational and finished with medals. The year’s best time was posted by David Bursewicz which was 14:32 in a 21 2 mile dual against Clark County. Cross Country The Tennis Tigerettes 2-8 record is explained by looking at the competition. They played against QND, Palmyra, Knox Co., and Scotland Co., and also participated in the Kirksville Tourney. Coach Jones stated that this was a rebuilding year since only two seniors were on the team. Despite the boys tennis team’s overall record, 0-4, it was a good season for them. According to Coach Crandall, it was a good training for next year’s season. 96 Tennis Baseball The Canton Baseball team ended the season with a 7-3 record, the three losses coming from the Payson, Illinois team. The experienced club, which started eight Seniors, combined excellent pitching and tough defense to win five of its games by ten runs or more. Another strong team asset was its base running ability. They attempted to steal 78 bases and were thrown out only four times. The highlight of the season was traveling to Payson, Illinois, and beating their undefeated team by a score of 11-1. Coach Crandall regrets losing the talented Seniors, but is looking forward to working with the underclassmen next year. Due to the cold, wet weather, this year’s golfing season was erratic. Despite many other cancelled meets, the team finished eleventh in the twenty-two team district meet. Marty Alberty, Mike Collins, Brad Davis, Tom Ellison, and Jim Hamilton formed the nucleus of the team. Golf The girl’s track team had a very rewarding season. The team placed fifth at Cansippi Relays and District, and also won two triangular meets. Lora Roach, Maria Kirchner, Barb Conoyer, Joni Stevenson, Christie Rathbun, Tena Moore, and alternate Jeanne Uhlmeyer all went to the state meet. The Canton boy’s track team, with a score of 120 points, won the Kirksville District meet, and defeated the state champion, Princeton. Scoring for the Tigers at district were: P. Ayers-1st, 440 run; 2nd, 220 dash; 2nd, discus; 1st, mile relay. K. Moore- 1st, 880 run; 1st, mile relay; 3rd, mile; 1st, 2 mile relay. C. Spalding- 1st, mile relay; 3rd, 440 run, 4th, 220 dash, 5th triple jump. D. Bursewicz- 1st, 2 mile run; 1st, 2 mile relay; 3rd, 880 run. N. Ayers in four events, Moore in three events, Bursewicz, Spalding, Stewart, and Hill in two events, and Bruce Schlager, McCullough, and Shirey in one event. At State, Canton finished 11th out of 155 schools. Paul Ayers finished 2nd, 440 run; 5th, 220 dash. Keith Moore finished 4th, 880 run; 6th, 2 mile relay team, 6th, 1 mile relay team. Coach Jones credited all members of the team with an exceptional effort and fine attitude. Track 97 Remembering The 77-78 school year was a full one! Besides the regular round of classes and extracurricular activities, students participated in parades, enjoyed assemblies, took part in skits and plays and just generall enjoyed being students at Canton R-V. High points in the year were Homecoming and the Banquet and Prom and of course, for the seniors, the senior trip to the Ozarks, and finally, Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises at Alexander-Campbell Auditorium. All in all, 1977 and 1978 were years for “Movin’ On Up!” 99 At the end of the first quarter of the year, on a Friday, it was the parents’ turn to come to school while the students stayed at home! This was a new idea for R-V and parent feedback was favorable! Parents were scheduled for conferences with the teachers of elementary school children and parents of the older students had the opportunity to visit with the junior high and high school teachers as well as pick up their son’s or daughter’s grade cards for first quarter. Student Council members assisted as guides for the day. Parents Come To School! 100 Homecoming Week kicked off with the Student Council Leggs contest. Melinda Lillard and Kirk Brown were judged to have best looking legs in the high school. Greg Miller and Lisa Williams were crowned Mr. and Miss Irresistible. Pie Day, Overalls Day, and School Color Day finished out the rest of the week. The 1978 Homecoming Dance was held Friday night, with Gail Schlager as Queen. 101 The ’78 Spring Sing. Around the World in Dance and Song, was the combined effort of K-6 grades. The production featured kindergarteners dancing the Virginia Reel and the Minuet. First graders performed a dance and songs from Denmark while second graders represented Russia. Third graders depicted Tropical Africa and fourth graders represented Appalachia. Fifth graders became Hawaii and sixth graders were Mexico. The production was under the direction of elementary music teacher Barbara McSpadden. Israel was grades 3-6. Williamstown. Spring Sing 102 A rainbow of colors was the backdrop for the 1978 Home Ec. Style Show held on April 17. Annie Shaw and Gail Schlager were the moderators as over 90 girls participated in this colorful, yearly event. The Senior Home Ec. girls presented Mrs. Howe with a gift certificate and a corsage to show their appreciation. Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom The Juniors decorated the little gym in vivid, bold colors to carry out the theme. Colour My World.” which leatured a rainbow, fountain and waterlall. The banquet, held at the Gladys Crown Student Center, was, as usual, delightful with Kline Logsdon’s cuisine. The Senior and Junior Class Presidents traded parting shots to finish the events. 104 Top Left: The 1977-78 Prom saw the naming of Gail Schlager and Curt McCutchan as attendants; Tami Briscoe as Queen; Kevin Shirey as King; Paul Ayers and Maria Kirchner as attendants.
