Kenneth Hemming, who was on Canton’s first yearbook staff, generously shared his copy of the ’35 FLASH with us. The pictures of the graduates of that year and the pictures of the basketball teams and of the band are from his copy of that yearbook. Pictures from 41 years ago are included in the ’76 FLASH to give us an historical perspective on our own school’s past in recognition of our nation’s 200th birthday. Forward from the 1935 FLASH: “In the future, perhaps, we will be able to see our friends, no matter where they may be, through the medium of television. Our pictures in turn will be flashed back to them. But never again will we have a chance to see things as they have been, except in pictures. The aim of this edition of The FLASH is to record for our future enjoyment the memories of our school life. George Constantz. Jr., Douglas And In The 1975-76 school year was an outstanding success for the Canton bands. The first major event of the year was moving from the old band “HUT” to the new spacious quarters located south of the new gymnasium. Some of the older band students claimed to miss the rustic charm of the old hut but were glad to be able to spread out and play with more room in the new facility. The Marching Tigers extended their consecutive marching competition victories to 29 before placing second in their final contest of the year. Had they finished first, it would have marked the fifth complete marching season without a single loss. The Canton bands from 1967 to the present have established a most enviable record, one that ranks them with the very best in the nation. Haley, Charles Harrison. Janelle Jennings. FOURTH ROW: Allan McDaniel, Sam Law. William Westhoff, Lucretia Johnson. Ann Borrows. Mamie Boulware, Kenneth Barkley. Oscar Neil Miller. Quinn Constantz. Mr. L. G. Fascinato. Director. The band has given us splendid music at many school programs this year, and had a very good chance of taking first place again at the Kirksville tournament. Unfortunately, illness of many of the members prevented the trip. FLASH 1935 1976 The band performed a special concert of American music to mark the nation’s Bicentennial. The band performed at Kirksville in the State Concert Band Contest and received “I” ratings in both concert presentation and sight reading. A number of soloists and small ensembles also performed. The soloist ratings were: Joe Stevenson. Bob Schryver and Jeanne Lloyd, I; Bruce Landon. Amy McBride and Mary McCutchan, II. The ensemble ratings were: Flute Quartet, Saxaphone Quartet, Brass Quintet, Brass Sextet, I; Clarinet Quartet, Trio, Horn Quartet, II. 74 Organizations FIRST ROW: Randy Hill, Susan Dochterman, Teresa Sanders. Varisty Boys Varsity Girls Sherri Brown, Terry Cole, Cynthia Crandall. Kim Janncy, Cindy Ryan. Marvis Ridgely. Dobbic Porter, Coach Ron Burger. The boys and girls tennis teams experienced a very enjoyable and satisfying season. The girl's team posted a 500 season, compiling a record of 5-5 with losses coming from the much larger Quincy and Hannibal schools. The returning varsity girls and talented freshmen and sophomores must meet a tremendous challenge brought about by the loss of four outstanding seniors: Debbie Porter. Kim Janney. Terry Cole, and Sherri Brown. Varsity boys tennis is back after an absence of a year. This year’s team, although lacking in experience due to the fact only freshmen and sophomores comprised the team, showed determination and rapid progress in tennis skills. The boy’s team won two and lost three of their matches. The steady improvement gave an indication that the future should bring a great deal of success to Canton and these young tennis enthusiasts. In district competition, the Tigerettes lost to the Knox County Eagles who are ’76 State Champions. Varsity players who are graduating are Cathy Galbraith, Debbie Porter, Terry Cole. Kim Janney and Kathy Uhlme er.’ Coach Roberts 94 Randy Hill Jeff Dodson Joe Eatman Drew Phillips Dale McDermott Terry Wolf Dan Wheeler Varsity Boys “The Varsity Basketball Team finished the season with 20 wins and 7 losses. Highlights of the year were a 64-61 victory over rival Highland and a 96-67 win over Scotland County for the Championship of the Scotland Co. Tourney. The Tigers were able to play before a large home crowd with the completion of the new gym. The new gym gave the tigers the most modern facility in the area. Graduating varsity players include Randy Hill. Joe Eatman. Dale McDermott. Tracy Du,y, Tim Jones.” Coach Wright 95 Basketball Baseball § Softball “The Junior Varsity Boys compiled a 9-5 record while playing a very tough schedule that included small schools’ varsity teams. As the J.V. team was composed mostly of sophomores, Canton can look forward to having continued strong varsity squads in the future.” Coach Wright “Although their record was 1 win and 3 losses, the seventh grade girls had a good season. After losing the first three games by only a few points, the season finale was that of beating undefeated Lewistown 20-15!” Coach Gladbach Golf “The golf team showed much improvement throughout the season and placed high in many meets. All the spots on the team were filled with underclassmen except one so that next years team should be especially strong.” Coach Wright “The baseball squad finished the season with a 6-4 record while playing an abreviated schedule. The Tigers played a fall schedule only, passing up the spring season in order to concentrate on track.” Coach Wright “Softball Tigerettes finished the season as District Champions carrying an 11-2 record. Outstanding awards go to Joni Stevenson for the best batting average with a 435 and for the most stolen bases with 24. Debbie Porter and Marlys Welker shared the award for the most home runs with 3 each and Theresa Spurgeon was named outstanding pitcher.” Coach Roberts Cross-Country “Congratulations to the 1975 Cross-Country Team! As you know, it takes a great deal of effort to be the best in Northeast Missouri. This year you were the best! Your team was undefeated in regular season competition. This record will be something for all future R-V cross-country teams to strive for. You should be proud you were part of the effort.” Coach Van Meter 96 97 Western Auto Congratulations to the Seniors of ’76 The Best to You in the Years ahead from Brooks Flower Basket 141 Ave. of the Missourians Canton, Mo.
