Printed In National Poetry Press WITHOUT HIM And, if the sun will shine no more today, Does it mean my soul will leave my life and flee Never to return to be a part of me? And if the day does not seem right again, Will I waste away till life become unreal, Or search to find again his touch, his feel? Can the world go on, uncaring, unknowing why I Must have his laugh, his shoulder on which to cry? The world goes on; it doesn’t seem to mind. My ache is but a minute of endless time; Now life becomes unreal, an empty void; My soul has left my life; I feel no more, And my days will all be dark forever more Because he brought the sun and now he’s gone. —Nancy Stow Printed In National Essay Press UNNOTICED To people around him he was just a shriveled old man with little life left. They didn’t stop to think about the gallant life he had led, or the thoughts that ran through his aging mind. But you only had to look into his eyes to see that he hadn’t always been feeble. The crystal blueness captured your attention revealing that he once had had a sharp mind and a quick wit. They showed that once his bent, crippled body had been straight and muscular, and, where now he walked slumped and dismayed, once he had walked proudly with his head held high. No one could see that he too had a right to be happy and that he was still capable of having fun. No one thought to see that he enjoyed his last years and so the small, crippled, old man with the shiny blue eyes is left unnoticed. —Jan Burke From Lantern It’s cold outside; The building’s warm. My knees are froze, (I walked to school.) My coat’s hung in the locker; I’m almost late for class. I just sit down to warm my feet, When I discover That I’ve forgotten my darned old history book. Back down stairs; Run through halls; Turn combination. Oh, my knees! Get the book; Up the stairs; Where’ve you been?” In my seat. R-r-r-ring! Sigh. —Kathy Hemming compliments of ED ORF AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE INCOME TAX SERVICE
