Our theme, based upon STEPS IN LIFE from kindergarten to adulthood, portrays our ideas in these words by Spencer, Education had for its object the formation of character, which always comes from expansion of self toiling, self searching, self investigating, self perspiring, self discipling, and self analyzing in the STEP by STEP process of finding our niche in the vast space of our universe. From Lantern THE WORLD FOR TOMORROW THE SUN What do you see when you look at the world ? The sun is just a ball of gases. India in poverty? Yes, I'm afraid it's true. Teen-agers suffering insecurity? It never was a god or goddess, The world at war? But that is nothing new. What does this stand for? The men of olden countries, Are we worse off today, Used to think the sun Than we were yesterday? Was their godly father, Or are we just ready to begin And they were all his sons. To build a better Nation, For the next generation? But now we know it can't be; It can't be, don't you see? —Robin Brown How the ancients got their answer, Has got the best of me. —Dale Spurgeon A BOY NAMED THURM WORRIES There once was a boy named Thurm, Who accidentally swallowed a worm. As I sit here, I fear The worm gave a wiggle, I won't be able to think, And Thurm gave a giggle, Of a poem good enough And that was the end of that worm. On which to waste my ink! — Mary Ann Robinson —Dana King OUCH! When birds come, Spring comes. When spring comes, Flowers come. When flowers come, Bees come. Printed In National Poetry Press WITHOUT HIM And, if the sun will shine no more today, Does it mean my soul will leave my life and flee Never to return to be a part of me? And if the day does not seem right again, Will I waste away till life become unreal, Or search to find again his touch, his feel? Can the world go on, uncaring, unknowing why I Must have his laugh, his shoulder on which to cry? The world goes on; it doesn’t seem to mind. My ache is but a minute of endless time; Now life becomes unreal, an empty void; My soul has left my life; I feel no more, And my days will all be dark forever more Because he brought the sun and now he’s gone. —Nancy Stow Printed In National Essay Press UNNOTICED To people around him he was just a shriveled old man with little life left. They didn’t stop to think about the gallant life he had led, or the thoughts that ran through his aging mind. But you only had to look into his eyes to see that he hadn’t always been feeble. The crystal blueness captured your attention revealing that he once had had a sharp mind and a quick wit. They showed that once his bent, crippled body had been straight and muscular, and, where now he walked slumped and dismayed, once he had walked proudly with his head held high. No one could see that he too had a right to be happy and that he was still capable of having fun. No one thought to see that he enjoyed his last years and so the small, crippled, old man with the shiny blue eyes is left unnoticed. —Jan Burke From Lantern It’s cold outside; The building’s warm. My knees are froze, (I walked to school.) My coat’s hung in the locker; I’m almost late for class. I just sit down to warm my feet, When I discover That I’ve forgotten my darned old history book. Back down stairs; Run through halls; Turn combination. Oh, my knees! Get the book; Up the stairs; Where’ve you been?” In my seat. R-r-r-ring! Sigh. —Kathy Hemming compliments of ED ORF AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE INCOME TAX SERVICE ESTIL VAN FRETWELL Golf 4; Soccer 4; Basketball 1,2,3,4; Softball 1,2,3; Honor Roll 1,2,3,4; National Honor Society 2,3,4; Class Reporter 1; Class Secretary-Treasurer 3; Class President 4; Honor Society Co-President 4; Finders Creepers 3; The Sound of Music 4; Outstanding Teenager 4; Who's Who Among American High School Students 4; Chorus 1,2; REA Contest 3; Sophomore Pilgrimage 2; Special Writing Award 3; Free Throw Award 4; Drama Award 3; Math Award 1,2,3; Oratorical Award 3; Citizenship Award 1,2; Blue Book Award 1; Typing Award 3; Athletic Award 1, Clara Ethel Downs Scholarship 4; NEMSC Regents Scholarship 4; Merit's Who's Who 4; Outstanding Teenager of America 4; American Legion Citizenship 4; Kiwanis Citizenship 4; Missouri Youth Writes 4. Allan Encourages Students To Continue Learning Process The following letter to the class of 1970 of Canton R-V High School from Supt. Kenneth Allan, expresses his hopes for the graduates. Dear Graduating Seniors: At this important moment in your lives, I hope you will pause for a minute to reflect on the happy times of our school career, and remember the efforts of the many people who have helped to provide you with your high school education. The concern of your parents, your teachers, and the people in our community who are interested in and support better education, are combined in the effort to provide you with the kind of education that will serve you best in later life. But whether you go on to college, to technical training, or begin your working career, I personally hope you will continue to learn. This world is changing too rapidly to regard high school education as the end of learning. Regardless of what you do, you can read, and you can further the taste of knowledge that we hope we have imparted to you. We are proud of the Class of 1970, and will miss you. Our best wishes go with you, along with the hope that you will meet the challenges of life with a strong spirit and a constructive attitude. Sincerely, Kenneth Allan —THE CANTON PRESS-NEWS compliments of JANNEY BUILDERS s 4pi- ; ,Hi ' ' v_ -- . . ;• ■ . How do the seniors themselves feel about graduation? All the seniors of Canton R-V were polled about their feeling at this important moment. The results were read at the Junior-Senior Prom by class president Estil Fretwell. Here are their comments: Ethel White: Graduation really makes me feel happy. It has been a nice 12 years and I am looking forward to the future. John Galbraith: Graduating from high school is like one large step towards freedom. Mike Logsdon: It is about time. Jim Schlager: Relief. Pat Sherwood: Glad it's over with, finally. Patsy Meyer: Even though it seems as if I've been through a lot, I'm only half through. Mary Lynn Todd: Thankful that it has come so soon and been so great. Jarmo Lylynpera: I am lucky enough to graduate from two high schools, and I am especially proud that Canton High is one of them. Anne Calvert: Although it's straight from a cliche, one does not realize the value of his school years until they're over. Bobby McFarland: I am glad to be out of school for some reasons; however, I won't be seeing my friends as often. That will be bad if I don't see many girls. Laura St. Clair: It's been a most memorable 12 years. I am looking forward to graduation and college with eager anticipation. Nadine Nichols: Sad and depressing. Linda Rabe: Oh, Boy! And??? Frank Ewart: Wonderful, wonderful (not wonderful). Barbara Schlager: Sad. It was over too soon. Mary Pat McDermott: Very happy. Karen Rayl: Very, very happy. Jack Welker: Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Karen Uhlmeyer: First a feeling of sorrow, next a feeling of happiness, and under all of this a slight feeling of fear. Jim Spurgeon: It's about time! Sybil Ayers: I shall be both sad to leave, and happy to go on to new experiences. Conni Brennan: Leaving school is losing a special kind of fun and security and saying good-bye to some dear friends. Agnes Riney: Relieved because I have finally made it through high school and fear because my life is really beginning now. Charles Clatt: Relief and a sense of accomplishment. Stanley Welker: Wonderful, wonderful. Bill Caldwell: I feel proud, wonderful, joyous, and sad about the thought of saying good-bye to good friends. Joyce Mohr: Happy to get out of school but sad to think that you may never see some of your classmates again. Vernon Hudnut: Great. Brenda Lillard: Losing friends, leaving all those good teachers, not having any lessons to do, not be able to hear any more gossip, talking in draft, and especially leaving Ella Maria. David Robinson: After 12 years of high school my feelings towards those 12 years spent searching for knowledge are somewhat confused. In the past I have felt that if it were not for the athletic or physical competition offered in high school I would fered in high school I would have never attended. However, I now feel I have realized the value of the scholastic or mental comp.; also, I can fully appreciate what a comfortable balance that the two can bring. Ed Lefringhouse: I feel that it is a great achievement. Patty Cartwright: Mixed feelings of excitement, sadness, and wonder about what's going to happen next. Carla Myers: School? May I do it over someday now that my eyes are open ? Jimmy Lee Savage: Very happy. Paul Hemming: I feel a touch of relief and yet one of loss on leaving high school. For me, it is leaving a place where I have acquired knowledge, of course, but more that this maturity, understanding, self-confidence, and insight into the world that I am stepping into. Carol Shannon: Sorrow and relief. Ed Moore: Hooray! Ted Carskadon: Wow! Earl Hopkins: I am glad to be out of school, but I'm going to miss my friends that I went to school with. John Moon: Relief. Mike Allensworth: Finally great. Carroll Hoffman: Feel free. Norm Richards: Regretfully happy. Betty Scott: I'll miss the people most of all. Pattie Sykes: Happiness and relief. Lynda Ryan: Happiness. 42 compliments of NICHOLS IMPLEMENT COMPANY Williamstown Mrs. James McLaughlin, vice-president; Mrs. Lester Bevans, secretary; Mrs. Robert Shannon, treasurer; Mrs. Donald Waterman, president. The fusing of new ideas and old traditions from Williamstown into those of Canton’s school developed with much discussion, listening, and consideration in the 1969-70 Student Council. That was the year of an enormous canned food drive, and a talent show starring many students, from first grade ballerinas to the upper classmen hams, the last minute rush in getting ready for a dance, remembering to raise the flag before the day was over, and feeling a throb of excitement when a visiting speaker inspired them of the power and potential of school spirit. MR. McCAMPBELL and MRS. CRAWFORD. National Honor Society The 1969-70 school year was a special one for the Canton Chapter of the National Honor Society. The Peerilier Chapter of Williamstown merged with our Chapter to form a combined membership of twenty, including fourteen seniors and six juniors. Founded in 1956 by Mrs. Beulah Gould, the Peerilier Chapter was the first of its kind in Lewis County. The purpose of the National Honor Society shall be to unite and honor students who possess outstanding qualities of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Through their association it is hoped that these qualities will be refined and advanced for the benefit of the students, school, community, and nation. A prerequisite for membership in the Canton Chapter is an S+ , or better, grade average. A faculty board then selects from the students who are scholastically eligible, those who also meet our chapter's standards in the areas of character, leadership, and service. To be selected as a member of the National Honor Society is the highest and most worthy honor a student of Canton High School can receive. Inducted into membership during the 1970 Court of Honor ceremonies were Tom DeCoster, Debbie Gorrell, Jeannine Houghton, Doyle Jackson, Tom Ryan, Bruce Tomlinson, Judy Uhlmeyer, Steve Wagner, and Mary Pat Wheeler, bringing our total membership to 29. BEVERLY BROWN STORY Mr. and Mrs. Santa are in the living room of their home discussing how busy they have been this year getting ready for Christmas. A number of little boys who are quite unhappy because they have the mumps, must stay in bed during Christmas. They realize that in no other way could they strike a harder blow at the whole world than expose Santa to the mumps. Santa becomes their victim and is obliged to drop all Christmas work. Mrs. Santa calls on Queen of the World to help her. Just as the Queen and helpers have toys ready to go, Santa enters—smiling and completely recovered from the mumps. Future Scientists Science Fair Mrs. Petefish, Mr. Edwards and Mr. Hodges have arranged this year's annual Science Fair for Saturday, March 7, in Canton high school. Students have been working on their projects since Christmas. This year there will be about 50 displays. The projects have been made alone or in groups with the following international science fair rules: Saturday, March 7, at 8 p.m. the erecting of the projects begins. It should be finished by 10 o'clock, when the judging starts. Judges are science teachers from near-by schools and Culver-Stock-ton. The fair is open to the public from 2 to 8 and is divided into mathematics, physical science, junior high science, and high school science. Awards will be given for the three best projects in each division. There will be a regional science fair in Hannibal, March 19, where the six projects, regardless of their division, will be sent. Satu rday night at 7 o' clock lucky win-ners receive their awards. Young scientists are present all of the time when the fair is open, and they are glad to answer questions related to their projects. Everyone is urged to come and see the annual science fair Saturday in the Canton high school gymnasium. Admission is free. Collecting Chemicals Chemistry class is building up a shelf of chemicals which they have produced in class. Many of these were not on the shelves before, but were produced by chemical action from other chemicals that were on the shelves. Chemicals produced include acids, bases and salts. They are producing salts now by titration of bases and acids. Some very good tables have been produced from hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide (Lewis Lye). Other products are mercury from mercuric oxide, milk of magnesia, pure silver from one of its compounds, phosphoric acid, nitric acid, soap, charcoal, coke, black gun powder, peroxide, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, iodine, silver nitrate, potassium sulfate, and many others. Students expect to double the number of chemicals produced before the end of the school year term. Visited Research Building Eleven Future Scientists of America from Canton high school, their sponsor, Dale Hodges, and instructor William Edwards, toured facilities of the Timken-Burnett Research Building in Kirksville on April 9. They inspected television equipment used in teaching at the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery. The students were welcomed by F. M. Walter, dean of students at the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery, who spoke briefly on entrance requirements and curriculum at the osteopathic college. Gustavo Appeltauer, research assistant in physiology, explained project involving the exchange of substances between nerve and tissues supplied which employes radioactive tracing. Dr. F. T. Dunn, physiologist, demonstrated equipment he uses in research on how nerve impulses are generated and transmitted from one nerve cell to another. A ple-thysmograph, used by Dr. Alma Murphy, physiologist, to measure and analyze the exchange of gasses in the lungs, was viewed. Students also visited the closed circuit audiovisual studio, the anatomy museum, medical library, and instrumentation shop at the college. The tour was conducted by Mary Lee Richardson, director of information. Students making the tour were Jim Spurgeon, Mike McCutchan, John Moon, Jarmo Lylynpera, D. J. Sauvage, Steve Frankford, Patty Cartwright, David Mur- phy, Ann Calvert, Mary Lynn Todd and Anne Glasgow. Science Biographies The science library has acquired two volumes of biographies of famous scientists. Two bound volumes of this nature with illustrations would cost about $20 if bought from a publishing company. However, these cost less than half this amount because the work of collecting materials and compiling materials and the volumes were done at school. It all started when Tommy Hendrickson brought to seventh grade science class a collection of clippings of famous scientists (150 in all) that he had cut from magazines. Mr. Edwards, the science teacher, suggested that Tommy arrange these in a scrap book in alphabetical order according to the last name of the famous scientist. When the scrap book was completed, Mr. Edwards further suggested that they be compiled into permanent volumes for the science department or anyone in school who should need them for reference. A call on the office for help was made. After getting Mr. Allan's go ahead signal, they got the office personnel to compile the volumes. Miss Norma Jean Foust was enthusiastic about the idea and volunteered to carry on the work of compiling to completion. She made a copy of each scientist on the copying machine, and arranged them alphabetically. She then used two large loose leaf notebooks to contain the completed copies. Each copy was put into a clear plastic envelope to keep it from being soiled. Holes were punched in the plastic so they could be put into the notebook. Dividers with letters of the alphabet were inserted to facilitate the finding of any individual scientist. The two completed volumes were bound in imitation wood covers and given the title, Profiles of Science . I hope the future will be as exciting and eventful. To all of the fine people with whom I have worked the last three years, I would say: It has been an honor and pleasure. It is my hope that you have enjoyed it as much as I have. To you this I would also say, Take pride in yourself, your family, your community, your state, and your country. Trust in God, and you will make it.” Charles D„ Ferril A A A A. Aw X To the students of Canton School: It has been an honor and a sincere pleasure to have worked with you during the 1969-70 school year. Another year has been completed, and, along with it, another step toward your career preparations and personal accomplishment. Learning is a fundamental process of life, but one must continue to learn if he is to successfully challenge the society in which he lives. It has been said that anything worth hearing is worth working for, but nothing great has ever been realized without having suffered through set-back, failures, and mistakes. It is my hope that in the years ahead you will be able to take the good with the bad, learn something from each experience, and never become discouraged. j. Each individual is confronted with the problem of balancing his life so that it will be worthwhile and enjoyable. To gain this balance one must strive to keep a harmonious union of the mental, physical, social, and spiritual aspects of living.
