We chose as our theme, time. The time in life we as students are concerned with most is school time. In comparison with one's entire life, the school year is only one small flash of time. But in this school year we must accordingly divide our time among many activities. We eventually find we have time for almost everything of interest to each of us. This opening section is one way of showing that there is a time to heal, a time to dance, a time to tear down, and a time to build up, a time to laugh, and a time to mourn, a time to win, and a time to lose, and a time to work and a time to play. 7 Members of the Jr. High Student Council during the year are shown above. ROW FIVE: Jim Burge, Mr. Berry, sponsor and Nick Ryan. Student Councils Active Throughout School Year Student council for 1969 was crumpled paper cups on the floor after a dance, long arguments over the fine points of parliamentary procedure, a ride on the bus to the Kahoka rink for a skating party, a gym jammed with 200 kids from all over Northeast Missouri listening in a district workshop to a fantastically enthusiastic Coloradan named Earl Reum, and 28 kids learning by trial and error how to work together. The senior high student council was led through a year that included the absorption of the Williamstown school district, the enrollment of CHS students in the Hannibal Vocational School, and the construction of a new addition by Sam Calvert, who was elected president by the narrowest margin in recent years, vice-president Janet Mohr, secretary Cathy Burge and treasurer Susan Hendrickson. Junior high student council members were elected in the fall of 1968. Mary Ann Orf served as president of the council which sponsored several parties and activities for just the junior high school, assisted the senior high council in construction of a homecoming float and the district workshop, and educated its members in the role of student council in the school. The sale of spirit buttons, and the typing of the student direc -tory, plus the preparation for the annual April Showers dance kept this years Key Club busy. Mr. Dan St. Clair took the position as sponsor of the 1968-69 club, and promoted it to a high degree among the surrounding clubs. Graduating Six The Tigers had an experienced team this year with six graduating seniors. They are pictured clockwise from top: Kent Miller (53), Dale Stephenson (51), Mike Schaffer (33),Lanse Tomlinson (35), Jim Smith (41), and Gary Golden (31). 20-9 Tigers Are MVC Co-Champs The 1968-69 Tigers were a streak club for most of the year—winning seven of their first eight, and losing four of their next five, but they settled down in the Mendon Tournament, brought home CHS's first trophy from there, and won ten of their next fourteen games, to finish the season with a 20-9 record. Not only did they bring back a trophy from every tournament that they played in, but they dominated the Mississippi Valley Conference for the entire year, losing only one conference game to LaGrange at La-Grange, and finished the year as cochampions with the Eagles. Jayvees Prep For 69-70 The CHS jayvees played their most extensive schedule ever, and in doing so gained experience that will be valuable in the coming year. Despite their unimpressive 2-8 record, all their games were close and several of their losses came at the hands of larger schools. 22 Girls 1-20 in Year of Building ROW ONE: Maggie Queen, Karen Logsdon, Sandy Althoff, Linda Robinson, Debby Garnet, Linda Ryan, ROW TWO: Kathy Roberson, Jan Burke, Carolyn Hulsebus, Irene Dudgeon, Rose Mary White, ROW THREE: Patti Little, Manager, Agnes Riney, Karen Rayl, Cindy Hall, Manager, Mrs. Watson, Coach. The story of this years girls' team was one of rebuilding and looking forward to next years season. Though their record was 1-20 the relatively young team, having only three graduating seniors, will be far more experienced next year. But even with a losing season and many disheartening comments from fans the girls keep their heads high and played every game as if it were for a championship. The three girls leaving the squad this year are at right: Linda Robinson, Karen Logsdon and Debby Garnet. Baseball Team MVC Champs The Canton Tigers baseball team captured the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament and championship this year which led to the end of the finest year in sports that Canton High has seen in many years. Pictured at right is David Robin son attempting to steal second base. Robinson was voted most improved and valuable player by his teammates. Soccer, Golf, And Tennis. The soccer team had a fine year which ended with a 7-2 record. This was a great improvement over last year's seasonal record. The only losses Canton received were at the hands of Quincy's Christian Brothers High School. Mike Schaffer (left) and Lanse Tomlinson are pictured above in a doubles match against Memphis. Both Schaffer and Tomlinson are seniors. The boys tennis team which is a relatively new sport to Canton High had a record of 2-6 while the girls team, in their first year, won both of the matches they played in. Members of the boys team are: Lanse Tomlinson, Sam Calvert, Mike Schaffer, Joe Wheeler, Jim Smith, Kent Miller, John Moon, Tom Ryan, and Craig Myers. The girl's team consisted of Patti Little, Janet Mohr, Pattie Sykes, Mary Lynn Todd, Deb-by Garnet and Maggie Queen. In the third spring sport of the year, golf, six eager players brought home a 4-6 record to end the sports year of 68-69 for Canton High School. Miss Garnet and Gary Golden were selected by the Junior class to be Queen and King of the annual Junior-Senior Prom. They will reign until May of 1970, when their successors will be enthroned. DRAMA Active participation of many of the high school students assured the success of the various dramatic endeavors this year. The Music Man was presented by the Junior and Senior classes to audiences of record-breaking size for three nights, with several curtain calls each night. The drama class presented, a one act play and dramatic readings in a high school assembly. Its major production was Our Town , a rather unusual contemporary play. Winthrop, Joe Stow, shows the audience how to play the trumpet in Canton High School's production of Meredith Willson’s, The Music Man. Friendship Festival, two Culver-Stockton Homecomings, two NMSC Homecomings and two Hannibal Band Festivals. . . . and a time for every matter under heaven, states Ecclesiastes 3:1. Just as there is a time to build up, there is a time to tear down. The end of the school year was a time for both. Anticipation and excitement rose within the students and faculty of Canton High this spring as the original school building began to take on a new look. The old became brightened as floors were waxed, new equipment installed, and old furnishings abandoned. A pride developed among students as a new addition slowly began to take form. Students began planning ahead to next year when students from Wil-liamstown will join Canton students to form a larger student body. Signs of nervousness, smiles, and tears were seen frequently as final exams were completed, honors awarded, and graduation exercises performed. In the section following, the staff felt no words were needed to convey the messages of this, the end to a good year. Shown working during a regular meeting, the members of the Board of Education are Robert Janney, J. Pat Wheeler, Don Sykes, Robert Ayers, Dr. J. O. Schlepphorst, Supt. Kenneth Allan, Norman' Briscoe. Ledgers, levies, and curriculum: these are the concerns of a Board of Education. This year the Board, in addition to overseeing the normal operations of the school district, undertook the construction of a new addition, to provide six new classrooms for the high school. DR. GARY SHARPE Sweating Students Find Fitness Hard Work Aching muscles, gallons of sweat, a few boxing glove-bloodied noses, and fond memories of the Texas Star or Birdie in a Cage are the things that mention of PE will evoke for a CHS student. But besides these were a dozen other in-class activities, interschool competition in seven sports, and a year long intramural program aimed at giving students a measure of physical fitness for the rest of their lives. Mrs. Janet Watson For the first time this year, physical education was added to the elementary curriculum, in addition to their daily recesses. Mr. and Mrs. Hurley both taught, or at least tried to teach the first through the sixth grade students the various in-tracacies of the jumping jack, sit up, push up, and other body building exercises still only half learned by seniors. Also for the first time a girls' basketball physical education class was added, in order that the girls who played senior high girls' basketball might be able to practice daily without depriving the boys' teams of their practice time. Mr. William Berry Mrs. Martha Roberts Mr. Don Freeman Elementary As the Canton R-V district entered its 20th year, there was time to do many things—getting to know your favorite boy at recess time, a time to exchange Christmas gifts with your friends as well as to say good-bye to the teachers that you wouldn't see for a whole week, and even a time to have to go to the office and try to explain that errant throw that, somehow, went past home plate and into a window. But even more than that, there was a time to know your teachers—and a time to learn things from them. Mrs. Alice McCutchan, Mrs. Peggy Briscoe; Mrs. Janet Lewis It was a time, as all times are, of changing; a time of growing and leaving things behind, only to find newer and better things; and perhaps there was even a time to marvel that in all the world there were 20 women who could take the time to know you, and to teach you all the marvelous things, that people learn, and to care about you,.. seated, Mrs, Florence Legg, Mrs. Margaret Miller And at the end of school, there was even a time to get out of study hall and play whiffle-ball with your teachers and friends, or to go picnicking with the rest of your fourth grade, or simply turn around and look at the camera—but they were all good times, and times that would not pass again; a good time to be alive and able to smile. 62 Mrs. Cleta Mae Van Tress Mrs. Dorcas Mohr Ticket stubs, wilted flowers, and left-over programs litter the walls of the departing souls.
