And guarding her honored name. Then here's to our H. S. of C. To her may we e'er be true. At home or when we're far away, Let us pay her the tribute due. Her colors of red and white Fill our hearts with the loyal love, For they stand for the truth and right, As proudly they wave above. Class History On a September day in 1946, Mrs. Lasswell welcomed that troublesome class, of which seventeen still remain. Among the mischievous faces were: Judy Blackmore, Charles Brown, Patty Moore, Judy Downs, Gary Glover, Donna Haller, Ronnie Horner, George Hurt, Betty Lloyd, Dick Logsdon, Larry McCullough, Donald Raines, Lois Linson, Gary Smith, Sondra Watson, Stanley Willis, and Joyce Cary. Lois left at the end of the year. Reading and writing were taught to us by Mrs. Leeser in the second grade. Ronnie and J yce left us in this year, and Roger joined us. Mrs. Owens taught us Math and Geography in the third grade. Benadine Klusmeier and Barbara Barkley joined us this year. Sharron Lillard, Bonnie Spurgeon and Lois Scott and Ronnie Horner increased our class taught by Mrs. Legg. No new members were added to our fifth grade class taught by Mrs. VanTress. It was a struggle to learn the states and capitals but we all made it to the sixth grade. Mrs. Richards first experiences with our sixth grade were never dull. Added to our class this year were Donnie Martin and Jim Turner. Ronnie left. Bobby Clark, Teresa Powell, and Edmond Otto took the big step with us into Junior High. Our sponsor was Mrs. McClain. Teresa left us at the end of this year. As green freshmen our class was strengthened by the addition of Gene Egley, Teresa Powell, and Ronnie Horner who came back this year to saty. Our sophomore year netted us Joyce Cary. Mrs. Motley and Miss Graves were our sponsors this year. Marlow Strus joined us later in the year. Mrs. Motley and Mrs. Leavitt stuck by us during our Junior play, magazine sales. Prom and Banquet. The banquet and prom were successful, the theme being Oriental Gardens. Bob Helsabeck joined us this year. Marlow left and came back this year. Seniors at last. Joy Rose Wolf entered this year. Two chili suppers and our play Books and Crooks netted us plenty of money for the trip. Mr. Hall and Mrs. Ahrenholtz sponsored us this year and somehow they have lived through it all. 10 Prophecy I, Edwin TO'Morrow, alumni research secretary, on this date. May of 1978, after intensive research, and interviewing, submit this report on the occupation of the members of the Canton class of 1958. To start off I visited Marlow Strus, President of Ford Motor Company in Detroit and was greeted by his secretary, Barbara Barkley. After a short visit, I left for the airport, to board a plane for Hollywood. Quite by accident while on my way to Hollywood, I met Sharron Lillard and Judy Downs working as airline stewardesses for T.W.A. Quite attractive these girls! I interviewed several of the stars. Bob Clark, who was discovered in the Senior play for his ability to ad lib is on a five year contract with Warner Bros. Gene Egley, who also was discovered on play night at Canton, has shoved Elvis Presley out of the top, by his rhythm and blues. Bob Cummings, who now is an old man and too old to handle the part, has been succeeded by George Hurt. George seems to enjoy his work. While in Hollywood I interviewed Sondra Watson who is the owner and operator of a very successful beauty shop. I then left Hollywood to meet more alumni. While traveling by car to another community I noticed a highway patrolman giving a truck driver a ticket for being overloaded. After inquiring, I found out that Roger Martin was the patrolman and Dick Blackmore the truck driver. Now you know what I mean by overloaded. Quite a coincidence. As I continued toward the town suddenly I was passed by a hot rod which left me in the dust. Down the road a bit I observed a sign on a shop which read: Donald Martin's HOT ROD SHOP - Jim Turner, test driver, Bonnie Spurgeon, bookkeeper. Good old Jim still wrinkling up the highways! Incidentally, Teresa Powell Martin does quite a bit of managing in the shop and otherwise. 11 When I reached this fine community I was told that I could find quite a few of the Canton Class of '58 alumni at a P.T.A. meeting at the school. Donna Haller, now a second grade teacher met me at the door. As soon as I got inside I met some more alumnij Mrs. Patty Childress, Mrs. Lois Scott who both have fine families now. Also, in the group of parents was the former Judi Blackmore, the former Benadine Klusmeier. I found out that Judi has a boy in the 4th grade and Benadine a girl in the 6th grade. Then, here comes Joyce Cary, the commerce teacher at the school. She's working as hard as ever. I sat down and listened to a very informative speech on Homemaking by Joy Rose Wolf, who now is an authority on the subject. I bade farewell to the alumnae and headed for the airport. On my way I noticed a big grocery store with the name Logsdon, Inc. above it. I went in and saw Dick for a minute and found that Stanley Willis is the head of the meat cutters department. Very rich man? ? ? Next, I decided to visit some universities. At M.I.T. I found Gary Glove, who is Professor of Physics. He took me riding in his new car, which was designed by Gary Smith, the head draftsman at General Motors. We visited Bob Helsabeck who is horn instructor in the music cepartment. We all went over to the R.O.T.C. on campus, to hear a lecture on Naval Warfare by Lt. Commander CHARLES HURLEY BROWN. Then I went to the airport where I left for the University of Illinois. There I saw Betty Ann Lloyd, who is the head coach of girls' athletics. Incidentally, her teams haven't lost a game yet. John Wiskirchen has finally found his race. He is running the 2 mile in record time. From there I went to the parsonage where I met the Rev. Mr. Edmond Otto, a very capable minister. We watched the Kentucky Derby, and saw Ronnie Horner's famous horse, Doskey, run away with it. Again I boarded the plane and started for home. As I passed over a great forest I inquired as to who owned the land. The stewardess told me that it was state owned but Donald Raines was the conservation agent in charge. It looked as though he had a big job. For the remaining part of the trip, I read the paper. There I noticed that Larry McCullough was named the farmer of the year. 12 With that the list of alumni is complete and I respectively submit my report. tyuzdccateb BONNIE SPURGEON Basketball 1; Snooper Staff 1,3,4; Librarian 1; Sophomore Play 2; Glee Club 2,4; Pep Squad 2; Volleyball Tournament 2,4; Junior Play 3; Student Council 3; Reporter Town Paper 3,4; Honor Roll 4; Christmas Play 4; Annual Staff 4; Senior Play 4; Attendant Prom Queen 4; Columbia Trip 4; Kirksville Trip 4; Office Staff 4; Courtesy Award 4; Chorus 1,2,3,4.
