L , J. RUSSELL ElllS 1897 - 1957 Iames Russell Ellis, the son of Iohn P. and Nellie Mae Clark Ellis, was bom near LaGrange, October 1 , 1897. He attended the rural school at Ten Mile and the first year of high school at a subscription school at Ten Mile. He finished his high school work at Canton, graduating with the class of 1917. After teaching at the rural school at Midway in 1917-1918, he volunteered for service in the army in September, 1918, and was enlisted in the student army training corps. He received an honorable discharge in November, 1918. During the summer of 1919-20 , Mr. Ellis worked as a crew and property man with the Redpath Vawter Chautauqua Association. Then the next year he taught in the high school at Ten Mile. During 1921-23 he was superintendent of schools at Durham, and from 1923 to 1927 he was superintendent of schools at Ewing. He was superintendent of schools at Maywood from 1927 to 1929, when he came to Canton as superintendent of schools, a position he has held until his untimely death.
