Who Would Have Thought It HAROLD COLLINS ANN CONSTANTZ JOE EDWARDS DONNIE HAWKINS DARLENE JACOBS I 10 ROBERT JANNEY HAROLD LOGSDON BECKY RAINES RUBY SHEW RUTH SMITH BOB TAYLOR Senior Class History t At the beginning of the school year 1938-1939, the nucleus of the class of 50 entered the doors of C. H. S. to begin their twelve year stay, in which time each one was to learn all that there is to know. This nucleus was composed of thirty-eight pupils, eleven of which remained the full stretch in C. H. S. The eleven tried and true are as follows: Harold Collins, Joe Edwards, Donald Hawkins, Robert Janney, Harold Lee Logsdon, Bob Taylor, Nellie Ann Constantz, Darlene Jacobs, Becky Sue Raines, Ruby Shew, and Emma Ruth Smith. This sterling group of young Americanhood fluctuated in number through the years until at cap and gown time we are twenty-three strong. Durjyig our first six years we were watched over and guided by Miss Pauline Kiess in the first grade, Miss Leta Schlager in the second, Miss Velma Wolfmeyer in the third, Miss Merle Shore in the fourth, Miss Gladys Maiers in the fifth, and Mrs. Mary Frances Nichols in the sixth. At the completion of our studies under these able pedagogues, we were advanced to the Junior High, where we were greeted by Mrs. McClain, and Mr. and Mrs. Brown. Here under the splendid mentorship of Mr. Brown, we learned our English forward and backward. At the end of our seventh year, Mrs. Brown retired (we hope not because of us) and was replaced by Miss Maurene Boulware. With further advice we were released from Junior High and paroled as Freshmen to Mr. Martin. Here the wonders of Science were revealed to us daily by F. W. Smith, General Science teacher and Psychologist. Mrs. Doyle, who has since retired, guided us safely through our second year in high school. Our first year as upperclassmen, under the supervision of Mrs. Beezley, was destined to be our busiest and most fruitful year. During this year s we raised a record amount for the school fair ($290.00 -- which still wasn t enough to win), and presented an orchestra at the' Junior-Senior Prom for the first time. Among our accomplishments in our Senior year were a trip to the Lake of the Ozarks and the completion of our twelve year term in C. H. S. This completes our history to this day upon which we are turned loose upon an unsuspecting world. Senior Class Prophecy Class of 1950 The Class of 1950 is holding its reunion at the beautiful Riverview Park in and on the Mississippi River. This being the year of 1965, we find gathered at the tables the graduates, their husbands, wives, an children. Leading the conversation, as usual, we find Barbara, Call-Her-Jake Allen Schafer with her husband, Larry, and three somewhat bewildered children. In addition to being a wife and mother, Barbara holds two or three part time jobs and does custom knitting in her spare time. Sitting next to Barbara, we see the great concert pianist, Ruth Smith, who has left behind her many thrilled audiences as well as many broken hearts. She has not yet married because she can find no one who can support her in the fashion she is accustomed to. Next to her we catch a glimpse of the Johnsons, a prosperous looking couple. They are recognized as the founders of the hospital clinic located out in the beautiful suburban Canton. Although slightly changed by marriage, you will recognize Mrs. Johnson as the former Nellie Ann Constantz. They live across the new bridge in East Canton and are the proud parents of a whole basketball team of five boys. And here bouncing along, comes Coach Bone, the gridiron queen of Harvard. She became the first female football coach of a large college and did so well that she now has a steady job. Her boys are now home sobering up for the final game of the year. She always was a soft-hearted soul. And at the next table, we see the millionaire banker, J. Donald Hawkins, and his new bride, a fair-haired girl who needs no further introduction. She has been his private secretary for the past two years. On Donnie s right, we see none other than Francis Collins, known to us as Harold. He is the genial host of this privileged meeting, which is to celebrate his being re-elected as the youngest mayor of Canton. Leaning against the wall, we observe the distinguished looking W. S. Wilson, one of the nations most successful cattle raisers. Although slightly crippled from an earlier fall off the high heels of his cowboy boots, he went on to make a tremendous success of his ranch and now is so well off that he owns five Buick automobiles. Beside him stands R. L. Taylor, the famous authority on Dairy Husbandry. After receiving his Ph. D. from the University of Missouri, he traveled all over the world lecturing and teaching on this subject and is now comfortably situated on his dairy farm near Canton. Joining this prosperous group is George R. Clarjt, who after several years of scientific farming near Canton, took over F. W. Smith s job as Vocational Agriculture teacher at the high school. It is said that he carries on in typical Smith fashion. Over here drawing pictures of glamorous women on the tablecloth is famous New York dress designer and artist, Marguerite Clark, and beside her sits Darlene Rothfuss, who is a private secretary to a well known Wall Street broker. It is rumored that wedding bells will soon be ringing for her. On the other side of Marguerite, we find the former Rosemary Knoche. After graduation, she became world famous as a lady wrestler and only after her marriage did she give up the profession. She now lives with her husband and three children on a little farm north of Canton. 12 Look who is just now getting here. It is Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Burke, and Mr. and Mrs. Chester Otte. Mrs. Burke is the former Becky Sue( Raines and Mrs. Otte is the former Darlene Jacobs, both old grads of the class of 50. Becky and Donnie are the proud owners of a fine chicken farm and are known the world over for their pedigreed chickens. Darlene and Chester now have three sets of twins, all boys, and one other girl. I guess that gives them a good excuse for being a little late. Harold L. Logsdon and Joe Edwards have gone into partnership and have done with peanuts what Wrigley did with gum. You will remember that as a boy, Harold Lee made a good living from his peanut machines in and around Canton. Well, the partners expanded the business and now have peanut machines all over the United States. The boys remain quite unaffected by their wealth, however, and are having a great time here today. Mrs. Norman Adams, the former Frances Klusmeier, was here a minute ago, but seems to have gone now. She was out in her back yard digging dandelions one day when all of a sudden, oil gushed up. Since then they have started an oil refinery and now furnish gas and oil to all the filling stations for miles around. Spud Owen, known by everyone for his undefeated football team, is recently reported engaged to a beautiful Hollywood starlet. Over here sweeping off the sidewalk is Ruby Shew, whose work at the broom factory inspired her to invent and patent a new type of broom which is being bought by everyone. She recently built a huge broom factory here in Canton, which is said to produce half the world s supply of brooms. Sitting over here gazing into space and meditating to himself is Kenneth Wilbur Campen, one of the smartest men in the country. After high school, Kenneth followed his yearning for higher education and went on to receive many degrees from leading colleges all over the world. He continues to astound the world daily with his brilliant thinking and complicated theories, ,, That short dark fellow over there is Rocky Janney, known to us as Bud. After high school Bud worked as a carpenter in Canton until a Hollywood talent scout discovered him. He became an overnight sensation in Hollywood and is now a second Alan Ladd. That woman over there trying to control those two kids is Mrs. L. Green whom we recognize as Norma Jean Schaffer. Norma and Leaun were married soon after she graduated from high school and now run the huge Greene Super Market in downtown Canton. The toot you just heard signals the arrival of the excursion boat that is to take us to St. Louis where we will be privileged t,o watch a baseball game between the Cardinals and Dodgers.t Our atjpiission won t cost a thing because the manager of the Cardinals, Kenneth Gabby Hunt has given us free tickets. Hunt broke into the organization as bat-boy soon after high school and rose so rapidly that he has been manager now for the past few seasons. It pught to be a good game even though the Dodgers are in the cellar. Well, everyone s aboard and anxious to be off so I 11 bid you goodbye. It s been a good reunion and I hope we cantget together again sometime and compare notes on what has happened to the class of 50. 13 JjTirrJ (S’ n - X' ■ NELLIE ANN CONSTANT Z Band 1 -2-3-4, Chorus 1 -2-3-4, Baton 1-2, Kirksville trip 1-2-3-4. Music Department The Music Department is more colorful than ever this year, due to the addition of new, bright red Band uniforms. The P. T. A. sponsored a drive for the badly needed uniforms, and with the help of the Band students were able t purchase them in time for the spring contests. The old uniforms will now belong to the very deserving Cadet Band. They are a group of thirty-seven aspiring young musicians, many of whom will soon be in the Senior Band. They worked hard for the new uniforms and presented a very finished spring concert, March 17th, sonsisting of solos, small ensembles, and full Band numbers. The Beginners Band is a group of about twenty-two musicians who are still in grade school. They also did their best toward raising money for the new uniforms. The Senior Band, consisting of thirty-six members, has been kept busy all year. They marched in the Homecoming Parade, and participated in the Marching Festival at Hannibal. At nearly all of our home basketball games the Band added entertainment and enthusiasm by doing a stunt at the half. They presented a concert December 13th, and participated in a spring concert with the choral groups April 2nd, both of which were enjoyed by all those present. They took a leading part in the spring Lewis County Music Festival, both in their own group and in the mass Band. At the district contest, April 1st, the hard work and diligence of Mr. Martin and the Band proved to be worthwhile. They received a I rating, which entitled them to go to Columbia, April 29th. There they received the honor rating of a II. There is a group of about twenty-two girls who are working hard on the baton to become future drum-majorettes. A number of these girls helped the band faithfully and well with the stunts they put on at the basketball games. The Girls Glee Club, a group of thirty girls received a II rating at the state Music contest at Columbia. They also sang at the spring concert and presented a special at three of the churches. The Chorus, consisting of thirty-nine mixed voices, also received a II rating at the state contest. They participated in the spring concert and also presented a musical prologue to the Christmas play. The Junior Chorus, made up of the seventh and eighth grades also sang at the Christmas play. There were five solos entered in the spring contests this year. John Miller, bass solo, and Barbara Allen, low voice solo, received II ratings at the district contest at Kirksville. Those who were given I ratings at Kirksville went to the state contest at Columbia, where they received the following ratings: Nellie Ann Constantz, medium voice solo, received a I rating, Emma Ruth Smith, piano solo, received a I rating, and Barbara Allen, baton twirler, received a II rating. 48 Cheerleaders Barbara Allen, Dorothy Janney, Ann Constantz, Norma Jean Schafer. After the rough start, the Tigerettes came through with nine wins and seven losses. They lacked experience and experienced players, but they went ahead to win from some pretty tough teams. The season was ended by winning from LaGrange with a score of 32-17. The girls took third place in the Palmyra tournament, and at the end of the season they elected Ruby Shew, Diane Bone, and Norma Jean Schaefer as their co-captains. girls’ BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Canton Opponent Canton vs. LaBelle 24 34 Canton vs. Ewing 27 25 Canton vs. Kahoka 12 22 Canton vs. Palmyra 21 20 Canton vs. LaBelle 26 24 Canton vs. Lewistown 14 20 Canton vs. Ewing 44 29 Canton vs. LaGrange 23 35 Canton vs. Kahoka 28 34 PALMYRA TOURNAMENT Canton VS.
