The seal ot Canton, adopted in l88l, contains two points of local significance, for having been once a part of Dorchester, it has for its crest the triple towered castle of Dorchester, England, and also a replica of the coat-of-arms engraved on the tombstone of Governor William Stoughton, whose last name was used by the town until l 797, when Canton was chosen. It is the purpose of the division pages in this yearbook to recreate the atmosphere of our town, Canton. With this in mind, we present to you the 1964 ECHO. i- 24, N g?F3'f:-' 1-1-' ' f 1 1'2 ' .I'-'-IS. .. .. F ,. .. . N , ,Zi -2113.-4-FS. , 55 Q. f f 'ia 5 :3:'-.,,- . Mr. Welsh showed a sin- cere interest in our development as young people. He guided us most effectively by inspiring us to live lite according to standards from which we would protit. We make this dedi- cation in gratitude tor Mr. Welch's many years of service at Canton High School and for the inspiration we gained from his example. l .-. 5 Eclitors' Message The yearbook staff has dedicated their talents, abilities, and determina- tion to produce this 1964 ECHO. Our pathways through high school are memorable ones. For these high school years are stages of growth and transition. We hope that through this ECHO we have created a record to express a wealth of experiences and a treasury of memories for each member of the Class of 1964. 3'v li lr l fs- 7' an 2 1 -U limi! Bosanquet was a severe shock, to his family a tragic loss and to the students and faculty of Canton High School, a somber tragedy. John was an outstanding student and participated in many activities. He was a member ot the track team in its championship year, as well as enioying many fun filled hours inthe Dramatics Club. He contributed much time and hard work to the Canton High School Band which was truly handicapped by his death. There are pleasant memories for those who knew him. His engaging smile blended into an attractive ap- pearance from which radiated a winsome personality and a friendly spirit. The memory of John A. Bosan- quet will linger always in the halls of Canton High School. It is a loss which cannot be expressed in words. Class H istory We came to C.H.S. in T960 determined to make our four years an outstanding example for those who would follow after us. ln our Freshman year we elected Brian Callery as our President, Bob DiFelice as Vice President, Elaine Joyce as Secretary, and Richie Powers as Treasurer. Our class dance, The Freshman Frolic, had a record attendance of nine. In sports the Hockamock League was swamped by our champion track team. The year ended with our first memorable trip to Nantasket. Our Sophomore year was highlighted by the arrival of our new principal, Mr. Daniel W. Alvino. He created the first annual Carnival Ball, which was a new sensation. Mr. Crane of Sleepy Hollow set a precedent in the production of tremendous musical comedies, to be followed by Bye Bye Birdie in our Junior year and Little Abner in our Senior year. As usual we elected class officers: Roger Smith, President, Bob DiFelice, Vice President, Elaine Joyce, Secretary, and Brian Callery, Treasurer. Class Rings! Now we were really upperclassmen. For our Junior Prom we created an exotic Oriental Gardens theme. Everyone danced to the music of Lennie Arnold's Band, and the traditional Grand March was led by the class officers: Bob Seavey, Jim Russell, Maureen McNeil, Bob DiFelice, and their dates. The crowning of Queen Mary Lee Davis and King Billy Gardner highlighted the evening. Our Senior year started off with a bang, when late one October day Mr. Alvino announced that a bomb had been placed in the school. Excitedly we evacuated the building. The new addition was completed to accommodate the arrival of a large Freshman class. Although our football team had a very unsuccessful season, their spirit and the colorful performances of the new drill team and the maiorettes and band provided many a pleasant fall afternoon. The Senior class gave two memorable performances in The Diary of Anne Frank. The Senior Ball was held on April 21, at the Blue Hill Country Club. We elected as our class officers: Orlando Germano, President,'Billy Russell, Vice President, Jean Simpson, Secretary, and Gary Whidden, Treasurer. Our graduation, on June 5, l964, marked the end of four rewarding years at Canton High. klcuta Common WM? was 2Q fdsf anof jesfamenf gffge Ckss 0 efeen j7Q1120Q'e0fc31bc1?jQuf' We, the Class of 1964, of Canton High School, in the County of Norfolk, Commonwealth of Mass- achusetts, being anxious to ease our minds of the burden of proper mentality to do so, do declare this to be our LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT, hereby revoking all previous Wills and Codicils by us at any time heretofore made. In the'Diary of Joyce Kenney, a day is recorded in old Canton. The year is I984. . . . I was the first customer to enter the PODGURSKI 8- ARMANDO GENERAL STORE, but the manager, Joan Aiello, was already upset. Gang leaders Linda Cas- tellarin and Larry Zalis had broken into the store at night and had stolen the peppermint sticks. For- tunately Officers Damon and Lally had apprehended them. Pam Boyd, the Bohemian artist, entered the store to buy supplies for the day's work, report- ing that she had almost been knocked down by Joe Ammendolia, Brian Leary, Richard Pazasis, Joe Cogliano, and Russ Minkwitz, who were training for the Olympics. Pam was followed by retail buyer Mary Lee Davis, whose fashionable skirt was designed by Dorothy Johnson. Pat I-Iennessey, making his mail rounds early, brought postcards from Janice Pesaturo, retired to Tahiti, Janet Schermerhorn, a butterfly catcher in Africa, and letters from globetrotters Mary Casey, Bob Riley, Jim Murphy, and Steve Miley, all which helped Joan to forget the peppermint sticks. Deciding to accompany Pat on his route, I passed from the slum area, where social workers Roger Smith and Priscilla Marotta were working, to the HAPPY HOME ESTATES, designed by Steve Logan, and housing nine millionaires, Peter Shimkus, Robert 74 Mitchell, Thomas Southwood, Lawrence Wyman, Robert Hay, Richard White, John Keefe, Peter Bright, and Brian Callery. Susan Flynn, Louise Galvin, Dana Whelan, Carol Coveny, Pat Cahillane, Donna Brown, Kathy Oles, Karen Anderson, and Roberta Kelleher, who had all had the good fortune to marry one of these wealthy men, passed by pushing baby car- riages. I said farewell to Pat at the Town Hall. Selectman Kennedy twhose wife is the former Nancy Aransoni was conversing with businessman Howie Darling. Secretaries Cheryl Branagan, Jean Simpson, Mary Wolfe, Nancy Shaw, Sally Wetherbee, Zenta Vipps, Beverley Tenn, Pat Fitzgerald, Anne Paige, Ellen Ja- cobs, Barbara Bartone, and Marylin Bournival were preparing the Annual Town Report for the impend- ing town meeting, at which Fire Chief Herbert King intended to ask for a raise for his staff, which in- cluded Paul Donato, Earl Graves, Richard Galligan, John Soave, and Bill Mahoney. At the Civil Defense Center, William Russell was swearing in a group of service hopefuls. Cliff Buch- anan, Jerry Beddington, Dan Carter, George Alsopp, Bob Healey, Fred Kobbs, and Bob Rocheleau into the Navy, Bill Lenhart, Joe Zoppa, and Ed Sullivan into the Marines, and Bob Dunleavey and John Pol- monari into the Air Force. Dorothy Coffin, a civil servant, was handing them certificates. At noon I lunched at the restaurant managed by Bob Harris. While Maureen McNeil and Cathy Cough- Iin were serving me, a group of college students entered from my alma mater, Curry College. The students, Bill Dickie, Elaine Joyce, Gail Jenkins, Donna White, Carol Lornergan, Linda Haines, Jean Moore, and Jim Russell, reported that Sandra Barnsley, Diane Hatcher, Suzanne Duncklee, Carol Eardley, Elaine Flanagan, Billy Reynolds, Nancy Shaw, and Leslie Pieszchalski, who had been classmates of mine at Curry, were now faculty members. lt seems that the teachers were concerned about Tom Donlan, Bill Gardner, John Howard, Gordon Lyons, Gary Whid- den, John Whelan, Fred Cougle, Vincent DiBiasio, Bob Dudley, Jim Molignano, Jerry Brooks, and Rich- ard Lundell, also former classmates of mine, who were still attempting to graduate. As usual, Bob Doe, Richard Powers, Al Callahan, Mike Nitenson, John Horrigan, Tom Quin, Tom Galvin, and John Dunleavey were loafing on the steps of the lunch- room as I stepped out into the street. Above them was a poster that told of a musical comedy starring Gayle Cirello and Carol Bright. Comedienne Doris Coombes and Bob DeFelice and Dave Moss had lead roles. Eness Pino, the choreographer, was director of the chorus, which included Linda Wurzel, Jane Cam- eron, Jeanine Pizurra, Georgia Coombes, Marcia Jenkins, Mary Ann Scott, and Ann Landon. Further down the street, outside the Contois Brothers Research Center, mechanics Teddy Damon, Paul Sroczinski, and Pete Renaud were working on an air conditioning unit designed by Stuart Rubin. lnside engineers Glenn Plotner, Fred Noll, Orlando Germano, Richard Cooke, Alan Eisenhaur, Paul Tink- ham, Colin Taylor, Jim Scanlon, Eddie Hayes, Barry Ronayne, and Paul Wipperman were working under Director Bob Seavey. Jane Lewis, a secretary, di- rected me to the RESEARCH ON THE STARS DE- PARTMENT, where draftsman Paul Mazonne was Consulting with Engineer Pete McWilliams. Judy Hartford, Charlene Lyons, Suzanne Briggs, and Nancy lgo worked under Supervisor Marcia Leary in the drafting room. I decided to walk from the factory through Tedesco Memorial Park to the ,St. Jean Apothecary to buy some fingernail polish. Wardell Pasquarosa offers horse and buggy rides through the scenic park, Bill Forsyth takes care of the horses. Game Warden Dick Doody, Forest Ranger Chip Harris, and Conservation Officer Dave Eames keep the park in its present good condition. Anna lrving, Cynthia lngemi, Trudy Kaplan, Mary Kelleher, and Mary Ryan were preparing a drug when I entered the Apothecary. The hospital, for rather obvious reasons, boards the old apothecary. Doctors Fred Danner and Jane Blackam work here with nurses Cathy Talbott, Carol Crossen, Ann Mal- colmson, Carol Soule, Cheryl Seronick, and Donna Kelley. Doctor Priluck, a psychiatrist, was obtaining data from Phyllis Brennan, Judy Goldberg, Ellen Cohen, Joanne Corwin, Judy Kaplan, Kathy Kelleher, Cathy Langill, Pat Skehan, and Pam Taylor, medical secretaries. Doctor Priluck wanted to know the case histories of Peggy Comer, who was still striving to know herself, and Peggy Doucette, Diane Smith, and Anne-Marie Rogers, who thought they could fly. On the way back from the hospital, l encountered a group surrounding one of the benches in Tedesco Memorial Park. Here an eager group was question- ing an old man, Reporters Carlton Sansoucy and Frances Clines were asking the questions. Artists Anne Duguay, Richard Flanagan, and Donna Keegan were representing the magazine ELITE along with Tom Walsh, who was taking pictures, and Richard Teague, a printer, who was advising Tom on the number of shots needed for the ELITE. After in- quiring, I found that the old man's name was Warren Kelson and that he believed he could live six more years to become lOO. 75 BEST ALL AROUND BEST DRESSED Maureen and Howie Janis and Bill BEST DANCERS Eness and Bobby I MOST ATHLETIC Elaine and Russ SENIQR .PF 1 3 z 4 9 . 5 . The National Honor Society's stated purpose is that each of its members encourage these values throughout the school. This year the mem- bers of the Canton High School National Honor Society have aided other students by tutoring them in certain subjects. I hope that in future years the National Honor Society members will perform many more services by which they may apply their scholarship, service, leadership, and character to benefit others.
