How well I remember our first few weeks at Canton High . . . entering classes, red-faced and late, because we had just been informed we were in the wrong room . . . those lockers which always seemed to be stuck . . . the new thrill of rooting for our school at football games. Early in November we held an election to choose our class officers. When the votes were counted, we found out that David Hagan was our President, Paul Carroll our Vice President, Judy Doyle our Secretary, and Stephen Hagan our Treasurer. Together these capable officers planned many events for our class, the first of which were two food sales which helped get our treasury off to a good start. On May 6, 1955, we played host to the other students of the school at our big dance-the Freshman Frolic. After this memorable night was over, we happily looked forward to our class trip to Nantasket, which was the perfect ending for our fun-filled freshman year. Back at C. H. S. again after summer vacation, this time as sophomores, we got right down to business and held election for class officers. Our choices were: President, -loel Lernerg Vice President, Barbara Bankartg Secretary, Paul Carroll, and Treasurer, Marcia Gallagher. These four efficient people did their best to make our sophomore year a happy one. At their meeting in February, they made plans for our Sophomore Hop. Committees were chosen, an orchestra picked, and the date of our dance was set for March. The dance was a huge success, we all had a wonderful time. At the next meeting, our class officers were told by Mr. Donavan that We could choose our class rings in our sophomore year. Our ring committee was composed of the following class members: Stephen Hagan, joel Lerner, Lena Cardell, Diane Carco, Nancy Adams, Paul Carroll, and Caroline Taber. We were all very pleased at their choice of a stone. .1 black onyx, and with pleasure we looked forward to receiving our class rings early in our junior year, The following September, we found ourselves bark at school, ready to start our biggest year' so lar, our junior year. As we had planned, we were soon proudly sporting our handsome class rings. Un May 2-1 came the evening we had long anticipated W our junior Prom. Soft lights, lovely decorations, and enchanting music added to the magic of this wonderful night. The highlight of the evening was the irowning of our King and Queen, Lois CLASS 'lilHIC'.' Notre Dame Victory March Phillips and Kenneth Ciorten. Farewell to old Canton High We're going onward, our aims are high XWe'll be loval to your name True to tradition bring you fame New worlds to conquer, lands to see The sky's no limit for you and me Thank you teachers for the courage Wfe learned at Canton High HISTCJRY Now our junior year was fast drawing to a close, and before we knew it, we would be seniors. At the graduation exercises of the Class of 1957, the following members of our class received Pro Merito awards: Baker, A. Citrano, P. Currier, K. Donaghey, W. Gefteas, B. Gora, S. Hagan, M. Kc-lliher, Lerner, E. Mennino, Mitcheroney, S. Nenart, C. Taber, L. Tatum, L. Tatum, E. Vaitkunas, and Yeomans. Instead of the traditional trip to Nantasket, we ended our junior year by an excursion to Rocky Point, Rhode Island, where we spent a day we will always remember. As we sat in our homerooms ton the first at lastlj in September of 1957, we had that wonderful feeling that only a Senior knows. This was our final year at C. H. S. We got our last year underway by holding elections for class officers. Our able officers this year were: Gus Walsh, Presidentg Paul Carroll, Vice Presidentg Loretta Tatum, Secretary, and Bill Gefteas, Treasurer. We found that this year slipped by even more quickly than the others. Preparations for graduation were being made as far back as September, when two capable and responsible editors for our yearbook, the 1958 ECHO, were Lorraine Tatum and Stephen Hagan. On October 2, we were excused from school for our trip to Purdy's to have our Senior Pictures taken. After our Christmas vacation, the final plans were made for one of the big events of our last year-the Senior Ball. The date was February 25, and the Blue Hill Country Club provided the perfect setting for this memorable evening. The dance was a success in every way. Next on our schedule was our class play- Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. The stars of our play were Lois Phillips and Gertrude Dean. Senior Week followed our wonderful Senior Banquet, and we crowded all the fun we could into those seven days, they will always provide us with many memories of good times and friendship. And now, the final page in our four-chapter story-Graduation Night. Now that our high school years are over, even though we have often anticipated graduation, now we wish we could stay for just a little while longer. We are now beginning to fully appreciate all the help and guidance which have been so generously given to us by the faculty of Canton High, especially by Mr. Donovan and Mrs. Dana, our Principal and Assistant Principal. Though we are all looking forward to the future we can't help the feeling of sadness as Canton High becomes part of our past. Canton went to Hingham with high hopes of pulling an upset. ln the first half Hingham scored thirty-five points to Canton's seven. In the second half, it was a draw, with Canton scoring thirteen and Hingham thirteen. Joel Lerner had quite a day for himself, gaining 176 yards along with named BACK OE THE WEEK. Billy Gefteas had his picture in the Boston Sunday Herald Sports Section the next day. Beautiful weather favored the old rivals on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1957, in the traditional Canton-Stoughton classic. Stoughton was heavily favored, as Canton had not beaten Stoughton since 1952. Stoughton had the better season, winning three while losing four. Stoughton scored twice in the first half, and Canton scored its lone touchdown in the third period. This was a hard fought game, but the boys from Stoughton proved too much for us. The final game of the year proved a loss for Canton, 53 to 7. Although it appears that the green and white did not have a very good season, it is only right that we give the just credit that is due to each and every member of the football team. We all know how hard they worked each week, practicing for that one big day-Saturday, and we also know that even though they did not have even one win, our boys played every game with their whole heart and soul. We can say that the underclassmen will have future years in which to make their glory, but our own Senior boys are through with football as far as high school is concerned. However, let us always remember these eight, the member of our class who have done such an excellent job on the gridiron: David Hagan, joel Lerner, Robert Trayers, Gus Walsh, William Pendergast, Bill Benner, Hobbie Harmon, and Billy Gefteas. We should also give special credit to Bobby Trayers, who, in spite of a painful leg injury, went out to hrli' the boys during the Thanksgiving Day game. ah. Second wiv: Mr. Leroy, Advisor, Virginia Wrigner, Dorothy Zanazzo, Edwin Banks, Richard Hendricksen, Marcia Blondell, and Susan Leary. The Student Council, under the direc- tion of Mr. LeRoy, has been very active this year. The representatives attended several conventions at various high schools, On November 29, the Council spon- sored its annual dance, The Azffzmnz Norizmze, which turned out to be a huge success. Virginia Wiigner and Al lirew were crowned King and Queen. On December 17, members of the Student Council represented Canton High School with a record poll on Bob Clay- ton's Boston Ballroom. As you can see, our school is well on its way to having a very strong Student Council, 4. . r, 3 gg. is ,. ,, . if vii. A, . , . . xw,,,J . X ,X . ,U 'I I I . 1 ' iz, ,. I4 fffizl-la' .
