CLASS HISTORY CHAPTER l Dear Dairy: Standing in front of the mirror dressing for our graduation exercises, I started to reminisce about my past four years. All the pleasant memories of Canton High flashed through my mind. My freshman year seemed such a short while ago. How I remember that first day! It was September 4, I952. All my classmates were anxious to start their new routine. We were assigned to various homerooms under the watchful guidance of Mrs. Miller, Miss Roach, and the former Miss Johnson. Then we were given a program of studies and a locker in which to keep our books when they weren't in use. It took us a few days to find our way around the building and even longer to learn to open our lockers. Weeks later we finally understood the for- malities of Canton High School. So our activities began. First we elected class officers-George Jenkins, Phil Powers, June McGowan, and Judy Leary filled the positions as president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer very successfully. Next, Student Council mem- bers were selected. Elaine Teague was chosen to rep- resent our class. Soon our football team was formed with Jack White as our able captain. Marie Henricksen, Judy Leary, Ruth Carroll, Virginia Scanlon, Elaine Teague, and June McGowan were our cheerleaders who encouraged the team on to a victorious season. Later we had a food sale to raise money for the treasury. After the football season, our boys went on to prove their athletic ability on the basketball court. Jack con- tinued as captain and the girls still supported the team. As the end of our Freshman year rolled around, we finally admitted our frosh subjects were not as difficult as we had thought. We chose our subiects for our sophomore semesters and closed our memor- able year with a trip to Nantasket. CHAPTER II Dear Diary: Here I am again, only now in my Sophomore year. I remember starting school this year with more cour- age and a little more knowledge. Being accustomed to Canton High, we could easily find our homerooms. Mr. Haines, Mr. Howard, and Mr. Dowson served as our class advisors. For most of us it was our first year of French or typing. OH! Those pronunciations! And- what letters were where? Class officers were elected again and much to the girls' surprise all boys were elected, Jack White was chosen president, Phil Powers, vice president, Bill O'Neill, secretary, and George Jenkins, treasurer. Judy Leary, George Jenkins, and Elaine Teague were our Student Council representatives. When the sport activities started, some of our girls played field hockey and basketball. The boys partici- pated in football and basketball. Those who played iunior varsity were George, Francis, Jack, Billy, Allan L., Danny, and Phil. They did exceptionally well win- ning eight of the games played. Nancy and Judy were chosen varsity cheerleaders. March 26, l954, was our first class dance, the Sophomore Hop. It was artistically decorated. Every- one co-operated to make the dance a big success. When spring arrived, Allan Lehan and Phil Powers played for the varsity team. Cherishing the thought of being upperclassmen next year, we closed our year with another trip to Nantasket.

CHAPTER Ill Dear Diary: Senior year seemed unbelievably close now. Mr. Scully, Mrs. Lincoln, and Mr. Clough were our advisors. Our first duty, the election of new officers, brought into office Allan Lehan, president, Marie Henriksen, vice president, Nancy Bowmar, secretary, and Billy Pozzo, treasurer. Phil Powers, Ruth Carroll, Janice Soderstrom, and Bill O'Neill served as our Student Council members. We chose our ring committee with the assistance of Mrs. Lincoln. Nancy Bowmar, Marie Henriksen, George Jenkins, Paul Leary, June McGowan, and Nancy Walsh decided on gold rings with green setting. As usual the football season reopened. Our boys were now varsity players. Although many did not make the first string, they played as substitutes. We were iust as proud of them as the seniors were of their players. When the basketball season started, Marie Hen- riksen and Janice Soderstrom ioined Nancy Walsh and Judy Leary in varsity cheering. Our rings arrived in February. We were so pleased that we wore them everywhere! The big night of May 20 finally was here-our Junior Prom! The gym was truly a Garden of Roses. Everyone was very willing to work on all the various committees: orchestra, tickets, decorations, refreshments, and invitations. Allan L. crowned Francis Whitaker and Nancy Adams, King and Queen. At the graduation exercises of the class of 1955 twelve of our classmates were honored by receiving Pro Merito pins. They were as follows: Brenda Angwin, Ruth Carroll, Mary Sullivan, Ann Sheehan, Judy Shaw, Joyce Craig, Euphemia Correy, Marie Hen- riksen, Grace Walraven, Nancy Bowmar, Allen Knowles, and Robert McClellan. Some of the girls also served as ushers. They were: Brenda, Kathie, Mary, Gale, Marie, Ann, Judy and Joyce. Allan L. was marshal. The next week ended our Junior year. Allen K. and Billy O'Neill attended Boys' State for a week. Then our class had its annual rendezvous at Nantasket. CHAPTER IV Dear Diary: Here I am now a graduating student-filled with ioy because of the prospects of a new future, but saddened by the wonderful memories I must leave behind. My senior year went by so fast. There were times, I must admit, we were glad. But now we wished we had a little longer to stay. Everything reminded us that our high school days were almost over. We were happy to know our yearbook was being edited by dependable Brenda and Bob. They worked so hard to achieve a new and different book. October 14, 1955, was set aside for a trip to Boston to have our pictures taken at Purdy's Studio. After that, we elected class officers and Student Council representatives. Allen Knowles, Kathie Lewis, June McGowan and Allan L. were president, vice presi- dent, secretary, and treasurer of the class. Those chosen for the Student Council were Ann Sheehan, president, and Sheila Hennessey, treasurer. Mary Sullivan, Ruth Carroll and Marla Balboni served as our representa- tives. Allan Lehan and Phil Powers were our co-captains for football. Our team was quite small this year, but our boys were full of fight. Our senior players were George Jenkins, Jackie White, Gordon Snyder, Rich- ard Henley, and Billy O'Neill. Nancy Walsh was captain of our cheerleaders. Ruth Carroll and Nancy Bowmar were our new additions to the cheering squad. They were assisted by our senior cheerleaders Judy Leary, Marie Henriksen, and Janice Soderstrom. Qt., qt i 'li 3' i
