TA RDANICO The Canton High football squad. which was weakened considerably by the lack of reserves. had a not-too-success ful season despite the efforts of Coaches Charles Stevenson and David Haines. Our first game with Wareham. in which Co-Captains Hughes and O'Brien. as well as regular quarterback Robert Bowmar. were sidelined with injuries, ended with Canton on the short end of a 26-7 score. The following Saturday afternoon Canton traveled to Hingham where they gave the highly rated Hingham eleven the scare of their lives. The game was tied 0-0 up until the third period at which time the lack of reserves on the Canton squad enabled Hingham to score two touchdowns and win the game 12-O. Canton then faced North Attleboro. a team which was unscored upon and which had scored 73 points in their first two games. These tremendous odds failed to have any effect on the Canton squad as they scored the upset of the week by winning 7-6. Robert Berardi scored the im- portant touchdown on the first play in the third quarter and Thomas Crawford plowed over for the all-important winning point. In the next four games Canton just couldn't seem to put two good halves together as the results show. Canton lost to Xwalpole 26-7. Archbishop Wfilliams 18-0, Braintree 25-12, and XY'hitman 7-6. The W'hitman game was even- steven until three members of the first team were sidelined with injuries late in the game. at which time W'hitman scored seven points. ?w: C only DAVID HAINES Canton then faced Abington. which boasted its best team in the last five years. and the green and white really clicked and they walked off the field with a 26-7 win under their belt. The Canton offensive line, which consists of Donald Russell, Kent Binley, George jenkins, Bill Wedge, Vernon Sousa, David Leary, and Co-Captain james O'Brien man- aged to open holes in the Abington forward wallg without any trouble at all and, taking advantage Of this situation, the Canton backfield, made up of Tom Crawford, Robert Berardi, Phil Powers, and Co-Captain Owen Hughes, com- bined to rack up a total of 26 points. Then came the traditional Thanksgiving Day game be- tween Stoughton and Canton. Stoughton went into the, game boasting an undefeated season along with the highest scoring high school back in the state. Canton definitely played its best game of the season but nevertheless lost the game by a score of 13-O. Canton stopped the running attack of Stoughton cold. but its failure to score when it had the chances and the completion of two long passes by Stoughton brought the football game and season to a close. The score fails to reflect a true picture of the finale as Canton scored a great moral victory. First row: P. Powers, XY, XX'edge. XV. XY'alsh. D. Leary. tl. O'Brien. . Hughes. E. Draper. V, Sousa.
