There was :L great. deal of excite- ment as we searched frantically for rooms seven and eight which were to be our home- rooms. The memorizing of the other rooms, along with the subjects associated with them, seemed hopeless and a. difficult task for a few weeks. 1Ye finally became aeclimated to the new high-school routine, and were able, with the help of our class advisers, Bliss Bertrand and Rlr. Scully, to choose our officers who were Harry Josephson, president: Anthony Andreotti, vice-president., Charlotte Hammond, secretary: and Velma 1Yebster, treasurer. This year being quite uneventful, when June rolled around we all anticipated becoming Sophomores the following Septem- ber. Therefore adieu until then. Dear Diary - 194-8-1949 The summer passed, we again entered f'.H.S., but now as sophisticated Sophomores, with Miss Johnson and Mr. Howard our class advisers. 1Ye lost a few of our old classmates and added a few new members. Miss O'Donnell succeeded Miss Leary in the com- mercial department' and as l'fl'llU adviser. Miss Lewis took over the girls' physical education classes. This year we chose as our class officers Anthony Andreotti, president: Harry Joseph- son, vice-president3 tlharlotte lslannnond, secretary: and Everett Knowles, treasurer. ln April we held our first, big social , . event, the Sophomore llop. Dancing to the I L4f0Z? sweet notes of the Starlightcrs Orchestra, we the not -students of Arthur Murray, en- joyed ourselves counting 1-Q-3, as we walked around the hall. By the time spring came, everyone was suffering from the usual spring fever, so it, was decided we would have a t'lass Day at Nantasket. The weather being exceptionally good, we all had a very enjoyable time t except for the tummy aches and flaming red sunburnsl. Once again we said farewell and de- parted for the all-too-short vacation. Dear Diary - 1949-1950 At last, we were noble Juniors and very proud. As soon as we were settled we elected, under the guidance of our advisers Mrs. 1,incoln and Mr. Dowson, our class officers. They were David Vote, president: Anthony Andreotti, vice-presidentg Loretta Russell, secretaryg and John Coughlan, treas- urer tlater succeeded by Angelina Silva.J The first event of this year was the class ring selection under the wise judgment of the following committee: Velma lvebster, chairlady, Shirley Rothwell, Esther Marathas, Angelina Silva, Vharlotte 11ammond, and Lorraine Johnson. 1Ye, the class of '51, dis- played the best looking circlets of metal ever seen, or to be seen, around t'.1I.S. In March our class, eager for some fun, scraped up skits, music, and jokes, and pre- sented a most successful Minstrel Show under the able direction of fun-loving Angelina. Silva and her cast. The climax of the year was our 1'roni. t'harlotte llalnmond, General llll2llI'l2tlly, and the connnittees headed by llorace Mackness, Urehestrag l,orraine Johnson, Decorations, Thelma liranchini, Tickets: and Sandra Sparrell, Refreshments, undertook the entire responsibility and saw that it was a marve- lous success. Dancing to the melodies of the Rhytlnn Kings, under the pastel streamers, it was a night never to be forgotten. At graduation, where David Cole showed his ability as Marshal, seven mem- bers of the class received Pro Merito awards. They were: David Cole, W'illiam Kreutal, Charlotte Hammond, Lorraine Johnson, Frances Kendall, Everett. Knowles, and Velma W'ebster. To bring to a culmination our third and wonderful year, we again chose Nan- tasket as the spot for Class Day. We enjoyed ourselves to the 'nth degree and gazed into the future of September. Dear Diary - 1950-1951 Now, my dear Diary, the most glorious year of all has arrived. This year we shall never forget for numerous reasons. On the seventh day of September, our greatest desire was realized - we were Seniors. To add to our thrill of being the superiors, we entered into the spacious halls of the dazzling new Canton High for the first time. The gym, the cafeteria, the wall lockers, the chair-desks, and loads of room were all too much for us to digest in one day. It was all like a. fairy tale, and we the class of '51, were to be the first to graduate from this fine seat of learning. Room 1 tthe Student Activity Roomb was our homeroom, with Miss Roach taking over her usual duty as Senior Adviser. Wfe also had a new and much-liked guidance adviser, Nlr. Welch, whose untiring hours of consultation we certainly appreciated. We placed our class in the capable hands of llugh Ward, presidentg Philip Nlitchell, vice-presidentg Sandra Sparrell, sec- retaryg and Kenneth Croft. treasurer. This being the Seniors' last chance to compete in sports, we certainly lnade a fine record. 'l'he football squad showed their definite ability and were undefeated and untied until the heartbreaking loss of 7-ti at the 'l'urkey-Day Game. 'l'he field hockey team had a very fine season with only one game being lost. December 1 was the date chosen for the big social event of the year, the Senior Prom. 'l'his being the first dance ever to be held in the new gym, the task ot' planning was diflicultg but it is easily said that there has never been such a successful dance in the '5ler's history. With the mammoth Christ.- mas tree in the center of the hall and the red and green streamers, bells, wreaths, and snowmen radiating around it, the gym was transt'ormed into a winter wonderland, while we danced to thc graceful notes of Eddie lvaldi's Orchestra. 181 In January we held our Athletic Ban- quet, one of the biggest and most. talked about social happenings of the year. After the deli- cious and hearty meal the various coaches presented the awards. Jackets were awarded to Loretta Russell, Janet Mathews, Rhoda Binley, Charlotte Hammond, Angelina Silva, and Shirley Rothwell for field hockey: and to Harry Josephson, Philip 1V1itchell, Anthony Andreotti, Robert Colp, Russell Caswell, Charles lwoore, Hugh Wlard, David Cole, Kenneth Croft., and James Hannon for foot- ball. Letters were won by Kenneth Croft, and Robert Colp for track and by Harry Josephson, James Hannon, Robert Colp, and Alfred Fairfield for basketball. Sandra Sparrell, Lorraine Johnson, Loretta Russell, Janet ltlathews, Charlotte Hammond, and Shirley Rothwell received letters for their excellent and untiring job of cheering our boys on to victory. The basketball season closed with not. too many wins, but we all have happy memories of having had one year in the new gym. The girls' basketball team did well, considering that it was the first year that the girls have had a chance to play the game. In April our actors and actresses pre- sented Almost Summer, a comedy in three acts by Christopher Sergel. Directed by the able and ever-so-patient lWrs. Dana, it was really a Broadway Hit. Everett Knowles starred as Paul Jones with Charlotte Ham- mond as his gal, Isabelle lV1inkle and Gilbert. Olden played the part of his folks, lV1r. and Mrs. Jones: John Callahan was his pesty brother, Junior, Janet Mathews, Lilha, played as Junior's puppy love, Lorraine Johnson acted as Mary with James Hannon, Jack, her sweetheart.: ltlr. Smudgely, the High School Principal, was played by Richard Baniang and Nancy Berge took the part of Anna, the maid. NVit.h the Senior Banquet. as the high- light of our Senior Class Wleek excitement., we close the book on our social activities. As we proudly walk to the platform for our diplomas, in our hearts remain the marvelous memories of our four never-to-be-forgotten years in C.H.S. Wlith our now acquired knowledge and guidance, we hope to achieve as much success in our years ahead as We have in the past.. The years ahead look challenging as W'e, the class of '51, must. leave the halls of learning for a new life of responsibility. We extend our most sincere appreciation to the faculty and to all those who have Worked to make our stay at Canton 1-ligh School a most. lucrative one. We now bid a heartbreaking farewell to all . . . Fra.nee.s- Kentlull .el nyc'l'1'1za Sfzflvu.
