ANNIE E. CHACE 1874-1876 Annie E. Chace graduated from the Taunton High School in 1864. She taught first in a Primary School in Taunton, being principal for five years. She then took an assistant ' s posi- tion in a Grammar School in Taunton. The next year, 1S69-70, she took the position of first assistant at the Wolfeboro Institute, a private school in New Hampshire. Owing to ill health she did little teaching the following three years. In 1873 she was assistant in the Franklin, Mass., High School, and from 1874 to 1876 assistant in the Canton High School. In 1876 she lield the same position in the Chelsea High School. In the fall of 1877 siiort time a teacher in the Girls ' High School, Boston, but was soon transferred to the Boston Normal vSchool as teacher of mathematics, wiiicli i:)osition she held until the time of lier death, April 30, 1893. Ahhough not a college graduate. Miss Chace was an earnest student, well edu- cated, and a thoroughly trained teaclier, giving a good example by her life and work of what woman as a teaclier should be. . ( ' . 21

I ' . I SUSAN (FELTON) HOWE 1873-1874 Susan Willard Felton was born in Peabody, Mass., February 15, 1855. She was educated in that town, gradu- ating from the Peabody High School in 1872. She then completed her education at Mount Holyoke Seminary. She taught in Canton as assistant for the year 1873-74, afterwards teaching in Marlboro, Mass. In January, 1881, she was married to Walter W. Howe, of Worcester, Mass. She died in Marlboro, Mass., November 20, 1889. B. R. S. 20

ELIZA (NOYES) SUMNER 1881-1891 Eliza Rosita Noyes was born in Canton, and received all the benefit of its public schools, graduating from the High School in June, 1873. She immediately entered the Boston Normal School and graduated the following year. Wishing to continue her studies, she entered the Girls ' High School in the middle class, and graduated from it in 1876. The next two years were spent in further education from private teachers. In 1881 she became assistant in the Canton High School, remaining in that position until 1891, when she resigned, and was married to Fred W. Sumner of Canton, where she has since continued to reside. 22
