1 f CLARENCE HEREFORD BERRY, A. B. 1875-1881 Mr. Berry was born at Gloucester, December 26, 1849. Four years later his parents removed to North Andover, where his father was a prominent citizen. He was a faithful and able teacher and directed his son ' s course into the same calling, wherein he also was to display remarkable powers. From his father ' s private school he went to the Pemchard Free School, and thence, by the advice of his principal, entered Har- vard College. Here he maintained a high rank and graduated in 1871. Leaving college he entered at once upon his life ' s work — teaching — fulfilling a desire cherished from his child- hood. His first four years of teaching were spent in the High Schools of Castine, Ellsworth and Cherryfield, Maine. In order to pursue his favorite study — Chemistry — to better advantage, he returned to Massachusetts and became principal of our High School, a position he occupied for six years, until his death, June 22, 1881. He was of a retiring disposition and won regard not by any self-assertion, but by his moral worth, scholarly attain- ments, and steady devotion to duty. - H. G. 12
