FOUNDATION OF SCHOOL. OR quite a number of years efforts had been made to rouse the town to appreciate the necessity of a High School, the most notable of which were the annual reports written by Samuel B. Noyes when super- intendent of schools. Mr. Ezekiel Capen, J. Mason Everett, D. T. V. Huntoon, a -n d other prominent citizens, also did all that was in their power to arouse public sentiment in this direction, but with no definite results. In September, 1865, when Mr. H. B. Miner took charge of the Grammar School at South Canton (now the Crane Grammar), which was by far the largest in town, it was decided to introduce various advanced studies, and make it practically a High School, so that the parents might be brought to realize the benefit of such a course of study. This plan proved so successful, that at a Town Meeting held in the spring of 1866, a speech was made by Hon. Charles Endicott, which aided so materially in convincing the people of the necessity that, almost unanimously, it was voted to establish the Canton High School. For some months longer the school remained at South Canton, but in April, 1869, the present building was opened for its use, and for the first time there were four classes in the school. H. B. M, iv

PREFACE. T THE Annual Meeting of the Association in 1894, Dr. Gill called attention to the fact that it was twenty-five years since the first class graduated from the High School, and moved that the Asso- ciation prin-t a memorial. This was to contain a list of the Alumni with the positions they now occupy; in other words, it was to show what our Alma Mater has accomplished. This found universal favor. A committee was appointed and an appropriation made to carry out this work. Circulars were sent out at three different times, containing questions to be answered. Owing, however, to tardiness in replying, the publication has been delayed until the present time and the classes of ' 95 and ' 96 have been included. In many cases no reply was elicited, and the committee have filled in the blanks as best they could. An attractive feature of the work is the addition of the photographs and brief biographies of the teachers, so far as they could be obtained. The names of graduates are printed in capitals. Those of college graduates are indicated by their titles. The number after the name denotes the number of years ' attend- ance at the school, followed later by the home and business address. Lucy A.
